Sharks tour squad named

Gary Gold has selected his best available squad of 27 for the upcoming Super Rugby tour, with the return of some key players from injury or suspension off-setting a number of other losses.

Late breaking news this morning (and forcing a change to the announced squad just ten minutes after its release) is the withdrawal of Ryan Kankowski due to an unspecified injury. His replacement is Giant Mtayanda – not an ideal situation given that the side now tours with only three recognised loose forwards among a group of 15 forwards.

Matt Stevens and Dale Chadwick come in to join Beast Mtawarira, Jannie du Plessis and Lourens Adriaanse, all three of whom played against the Bulls. Franco Marais cracks the nod as Bismarck du Plessis’s alternate at hooker, with Kyle Cooper seemingly still out in the cold. Marco Wentzel, Mouritz Botha, Stephan Lewies and Mtayanda form a strong locking contingent, with Etienne Oosthuizen surely now designated for a loose forward role on tour. Marcell Coetzee, Renaldo Bothma and Willem Alberts are the others.

Lewies will depart later than his teammates, since he has a Vodacom Cup match on Saturday afternoon to get through.

Stefan Ungerer tours as a third scrumhalf (behind Cobus Reinach and Conrad Hoffmann), with Fred Zeilinga and Lionel Cronje the flyhalf options. Seven other backs have been selected and will doubtless need to mix and match on tour; Andre Esterhuizen, Frans Steyn (suspended for the first match) and Waylon Murray are the pure centres, Lwazi Mvovo and Odwa Ndungane the outside backs and S’bura Sithole and JP Pietersen able to be a bit of either.

Sharks:
Beast Mtawarira, Jannie du Plessis, Dale Chadwick, Lourens Adriaanse, Matt Stevens, Bismarck du Plessis, Franco Marais, Marco Wentzel, Mouritz Botha, Stephan Lwwies, Giant Mtayanda, Etienne Oosthuizen, Renaldo Bothma, Marcell Coetzee, Willem Alberts.
Cobus Reinach, Conrad Hoffmann, Stefan Ungerer, Fred Zeilinga, Lionel Cronje, Frans Steyn, Andre Esterhuizen, Waylon Murray, JP Pietersen, S’bura Sithole, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane

  • As far as the squad – all I can say is “Eish”.

Hoffmann, Stevens (that one I can understand to some extent), Botha, Murray .. eish

If Marcel gets injured, we are in trouble.

  • Ag no wonder what happened to Kanko? He was just starting to look good again.

Guys, we can’t pick the players, we can just support them. So let’s hope for some luck and improvement on the road! Hopefully Paul Jordaan makes his way over after a week or two to help out at outside center.

Beast, Bissie, Jannie, Botha, Wentzel, Coetzee, Alberts, Bothma,

Reinach, Fred, Mvovo, Esterhuyzen, JPP, Sithole, Odwa,

Chadwick, Marais, Adriaanse, Giant, Oosthuyzen, Hoffmann, Cronje, Murray

  • Interesting not much loose forward cover considering Alberts seems to be a wlaking injury and Coetzee/Bothma played a lot of rugby recently. Stevens really has been poor so cant understand that selection unless as ive said its getting a return for money paid. Hoffman whilst not exactly everyone’s cup of tea has hardly had much gametime this year so our poor form cant really be attributed to him. The selection for the 1st game will be interesting…im assuming Cronje will play 15 unless JPP does. And those calling for Ungerer, why are you also not calling for Alcino Issacs who has been the 1st choice 15 for Sharks XV but hasnt got a sniff when the 15s in Super side gone down injured? Just curious

  • Okay, enough of the negativity already….

The club president, coach, a prop and a wing are taking a charter flight to the National Finals when the engines cut out.

The pilot enters the passenger compartment and says, “We’re going down. There’s only four parachutes! Since I’m the pilot I’m taking one,” and then jumps from the plane.

The coach says, “Without me the team won’t have a chance, so I’m taking one,” and he jumps out.

The winger says, “I’m the fastest and smartest man on the pitch and without me the team can’t win a game, so I’m taking one,” and he jumps out of the plane.

The club president looks at the prop and says, “You take the last parachute. The team needs you more than it needs me”. The prop responds, “We both can take a parachute. The smartest man on the pitch just jumped out of the plane with my kit bag on his back.”

  • Traveling in a train were a Wallaby, an All Black, a spectacular looking blonde and an older lady. After several minutes of the trip, the train happens to pass through a dark tunnel, and the unmistakable sound of a slap is heard. When they leave the tunnel, the Wallaby had a big red slap mark on his cheek.

    (1) The blonde thought – “That horrible Wallaby wanted to touch me and by mistake, he must have put his hand on the lady, who in turn must have slapped his face.”

    (2) The older lady thought – “This dirty Wallaby laid his hands on the blonde and she smacked him.”

    (3) The Wallaby thought – “That bloody All Black put his hand on that blonde and by mistake she slapped me.”

    (4) The All Black thought – “I hope there’s another tunnel soon so I can smack that stupid Wallaby again.”

  • The All Blacks were playing England, and after the half-time whistle blew they found themselves ahead 50-0, Jonah Lomu getting eight tries. The rest of the team decided to head for the pub instead of playing the second half, leaving Jonah to go out on his own.

“No worries,” Jonah told them, “I’ll join you later and tell you what happened.” After the game Jonah headed for the pub where he told his teammates the final score: 95-3.

“What!!!!” said a furious Josh Kronfeld, “How did you let them get three points??!” Jonah replied apologetically, “I was sent off with 20 minutes to go.”

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) : Ungerer has played off the bench in two S15 games – once last year and once this year. Last year he caught my eye in that game – very snappy service. He also has the pedigree – Junior Boks, etc. Given more exposure at this level, I think he could still become one of the Sharks stars.

With Hoffmann what you see is what you get.

And if judging on that then Ungerer also had a shocker in the couple minutes he had off the bench. Id pick Ungerer over Reinach…but thats another story on how SA 9s tend to try too much which stifles our backlines

  • The Sharks need to get the mix of experience and new hunger right. But also need to reward some form. So id start Jannie, Marais and Beast-Adriaanse,Bismarck and Chadwick off the bench. Oosthuizen and Wentzel need to start at lock, with Giant on the bench. Coetzee, Alberts,Bothma to start. No loosie cover in the squad but Khaya Majola/Dan Dupreez need a bench spot. (Our loosies look very thin for CC by the way.) Id start Ungerer with Cronje at 9/10. Williams and Esterhuizen at centre with Mvovo/Sithole on the wing and JPP/Steyn at 15. Williams at 12 as he is a ball player and creator and oragnisr on defense. Esterhuizen at 13 will run hard and tackle hard but sorry to say cant create a castle in a sandpit. With Ungerer/Cronje the ball will get to the outside channels more where the speed off Mvovo/Sithole needed. Then a big 15 to take care of up and unders as well as hit the line hard.

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 47) : I must admit i didnt see the Eagles game so cant comment. But he did well in the Super rugby game he played this year. At the moment our backline sees Reinach running around like a kid on a sugar high…Zeilinga looks like he just shat his pants…When Reinach runs out of sugar Esterhuizen manages to get the ball and by then just has to crash it up. If Esterhuizen misses or drops it then Murray gets it if he too hasnt fallen over. Sithole and Mvovo have taken to checking out the hot chicks in the stand so arent watching…and our fullback is looking for something to kick…or in Odwa’s case dreaming back to the wonder years when he had pace… to catch up with play… Maybe im a little harsh but you get the idea

  • From this selection 2 things are glaringly obvious about Gary Gold. 1. He does not know the men and their talents/capabilities.
    2. He will not be the man to build the future Sharks team as he has no desire to start the younger and better players even when he has mediocre players he can sacrifice to that end.

So what now, we wait until its time for this guy to step out as well? When will coaching quality improve?

The team pulls together and we make it into the play-offs. We beat the Stormers like a drum at Newlands in the quarters, we get revenge on the Crusaders in the semi and beat the Bulls in the final with a blatant forward pass after a knock-on behind some obstruction runners

Kanko is still still man out with an unspecified injury. What is an unspecified injury, three weeks later.
Either he has AIDS,a serious case of the clap,or more likely he just doesn’t want to play.
With the bank of doctors down at the Shark medical centre how can he have an unspecified injury.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 55) : I’m no fan of Gary Gold, but I do think he is getting a lot of unjustified flack. Remember, he had not been appointed as a coach, but as Director of Rugby. The fact that he is acting as de facto coach at the moment is more of an indictment of BMH and co (and the decision to appoint him/them) than it is necessarily of Gold.

  • I don’t have a problem with this squad in general,it is probably the best we have bar one or two exceptions. One,why no Kanko? Two where is Cooper?
Murray and Stevens are along as utility replacements.Stevens can pack down on both sides, and Murray covers the backline.Neither needs to be used unless they have to.
I am totally amazed Hoffman is still there as he is a one dimensional player and that dimenson hasn’t worked in any of his lengthy appearances. His game is not suited to the the Anzac conditions. He should be playing in the Northern hemisphere where he would thrive like Ruan Pienaar

  • @robdylan (Comment 62) : So why does he have an unspecified knee injury. That Sharks medical centre has some of the best orthopaedics in the world.
Not many new unspecified things can go wrong with a knee.

  • What’s up with Cooper? For a few seasons now he has been Bismarck’s understudy. When in the past he has come on as a replacement in Super Rugby he had acquitted himself very well. In Currie Cup rugby he has proven himself more than capable.

Then Bismarck gets suspended for a long time and you felt it was Cooper’s big moment to step up and shine. Instead he sucked and couldn’t find his jumpers. Then he gets dropped to the VC team and now can’t even make that team. What’s up? Attitude problems?

  • @The hound (Comment 63) : I honestly don’t know. General opinion seems to be that he is acting as head coach though, which he was not appointed to be. And that’s exactly what happened with Jake White; DoT acting add head coach. Just an observation.

  • It’s true that the Sharks do traditionally tour well, but can this 2015 edition be compared to Shark’s teams of the past?
The Highlanders getting thumped yesterday did them no favors for next week, and their 3 top players being rested means that they will need to target this home game as a must to keep up with the Canes and Chiefs after this weekend.

  • I do hope I’m wrong, but at the moment the Sharks remind me of me: in a place where I think, ‘how the freak did I end up here?!’; where the difference between failure and success hardly seems like something you can work on in increments, like practicing and doing things 5% better each game. Where it seems like no matter what you do, it all turns to mush. Its not physical or organizational, its belief. Only they can dig themselves out whether the fans back them up or not.

  • I think what we are starting to see with Cooper is one of two things
    (1) long term planning – he has reached his potential and it us not good enough or
    (2) he has signed overseas

Im calling a bit of both

  • @JD (Comment 72) : Howzit Bud,
Our teams certainly are in dire straits this year. Only difference being I didn’t have high hopes for the season to start with. Only little ray of sunshine for me, is that the junior rugby seems to be healthy at the Cheetahs. Won the Varsity Cup, lost in final of the Koshuis league, and the Vodacom Cup team should at least make the semi’s.

I just don’t see much of that helping the Super Rugby campaign. Unless the Cheetahs contract some top players it’s more of the same. I guess it is the same in the Sharks camp. The top players are dismal, and quite a few will probably head overseas after the WC.

  • @Ben (Comment 77) : Cheers Bud, hope your boys can restore some pride and stature. Even if they don’t win on tour (unlikely), then at least just play to their potential and hopefully get rid of the dirty team tag.
