Bok trio return for Sharks

Bismarck du Plessis, JP Pietersen and Stephan Lewies all return to the Sharks starting lineup for Friday morning’s game against the Highlanders in Dunedin.

The addition of the three key men is somewhat offset by the loss of Jannie du Plessis, who won’t play in this fixture due to a calf strain.

Beast Mtawarira is thus the only remnant of the front row that started against the Bulls a fortnight ago; Lourens Adriaanse and du Plessis start at tight head and hooker respectively, with Franco Marais and Matt Stevens on the bench. Dale Chadwick also returns to the 23 as loosehead cover. Lewies start at 4, with Mouritz Botha dropping to the bench. A positional switch in the loose trio sees Willem Alberts (8) and Renaldo Bothma (7) swap jerseys; Marcell Coetzee retains his place at open side flank, with Etienne Oosthuizen again covering the back row.

The backline is relatively unchanged, bar the introduction of of Pietersen at outside centre; he replaces Waylon Murray, who heads to the bench. Odwa Ndungane has recovered from concussion to take his place at fullback, where he plays alongside wings Lwazi Mvovo and S’bura Sithole. Cobus Reinach, Fred Zeilinga and Andre Esterhuizen enjoy continuity in the attacking axis, while Conrad Hoffmann and Lionel Cronje are again on the bench.

Sharks: 15 Odwa Ndungnae, 14 S’bura Sithole, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Willem Alberts, 7 Renaldo Bothma, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Marco Wentzel (capt), 4 Stephan Lewies, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Dale Chadwick, 18 Matt Stevens, 19 Mouritz Botha, 20 Etienne Oosthuizen, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Lionel Cronje, 23 Waylon Murray

  • Much better looking side.
Although I cant understand the positional switches between Alberts, who is a 7 and Bothma, who is an out and out 8?
Also would have swopped Sbura and JP, but perhaps they will switch during the game depending on the situation.
    Ditto for Alberts and Bothma.

But I do much prefer that starting side.
I wont comment much on the bench because of the 3 glaring weaknesses there. Stevens and Hoffman and Waylon…eish.

  • Pity about Jannie; wanted to see all 3 du Plessis brothers pack down; loose forwards looking good; don’t know why JP and Sbura seem to have swapped position but I will acknowledge that I’m no expert. Hope Zeilinga has a blinder

But Hoffman – of all the uninspiring selections on that 1D bench, he surely stands chief….I think him and Murray are teacher’s pets

  • @SheldonK (Comment 30) : I’m guessing we’re going to try wearing them down with our forwards. We’ve got a pretty decent starting pack there. If we manage to win our lineouts I expect to see a lot of rolling mauls too. And with Bissie back we’ll probably see even more competition at the breakdown.

No use bashing with your forwards for 10min only to kick away wildly or throw loose passes then undo everything just done by forwards.

Way to ruin the weekend guys!! If JPP is HM’s answer to the number 13 jersey then our World Cup is over before it’s begun! He looks disinterested on attack and scared of tackling.

I can’t remember the last time that I saw him run with purpose or aggression…or tackle someone properly!

  • @SheldonK (Comment 35) : It’s our tactical play that has me worried too. If we’re accurate in that regard we have the forwards to see out the game but we haven’t really proved much of anything in that department this year. This is also as you know a gameplan that usually relies on taking any points on offer through penalties, another area that has me worried.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 37) : JPP’s ability at 13 is not the issue, he proved that in that magical run to the finals a few season’s ago.

he just needs a bloody cracker up the … to get him going!!!!

always been a favourite player and he needs to perform if he wants to go to RWC. he has the speed, step, hands and mind for it, only attitude / proper competitive gametime severely lacking

damn, the Nonu & Smith partnership is looking good. no reason why Esterhuizen and JPP cant get their act going as it seems JPP will play 13 and Sbura only wing or later 13 in CC, depending on Jordaan situation (personally hoping for a run at 15 if Rayno Smith cant be lured form Leopards).

  • @robdylan (Comment 52) : yes, his confidence is truly shot but that will come right at some stage (or at another union). he looks so scared of making mistakes that he cant execute what he is thinking. reminds me a bit of Steve Smith just before his unbelievable run of runs – he could not get the ball off the square and just took one crap Proteas bowling game to get him into form. Just don’t know if SP has the mental mettle to accept a few VC od CC games as the opportunity to get him going again.

Hopefully our DoR and the good doctor can him firing otherwise he is likely due for a move again

  • I think we’re exceptionally harsh on our backline. Cant expect our centres and wings to be dominating the defenders beaten stats etc when they are hardly receiving the ball, let alone on the front foot.

Give our centres some regular quality ball, that guys like Nonu gets, and we’ll see that ‘devastating JPP’ again.
