Sharks sign flyhalf cover

According to the Community Cup Facebook page, DurBell flyhalf Garth April has signed a two-year deal with the Sharks.

The former SA Schools and Lions age-group player, now 23, has spent the last two years in the Boland Vodacom Cup squad, before making a name for himself with the Durbanville-Belville Club, which won this year’s Community Cup.

With the likes of Tim Swiel, Robert du Preez and Jean-Luc du Plessis all having left the Sharks in the last year, there is a need for flyhalf cover, one only made worse by recent injuries to Pat Lambie and Innocent Radebe. With Fred Zeilinga and Lionel Cronje currently on tour with the Sharks Super Rugby side, don’t be too surprised to see April rushed straight into action for the Vodaocm Cup side this weekend; Heimar Williams was used as a stopgap flyhalf against Boland last week but a more regular pivot will need to pull the strings against the far-more-formidable Griquas this weekend.

Welcome to Durban, Garth – let’s hope this works out well.

  • And right there – that is Natal’s problem.
When you continually sign mercenaries, you shouldn’t be surprised when they have no loyalty when a better offer comes along.

  • Hmm signing a club player ? Good for him getting a shot, just wishes he was 3 years younger.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 1) : I don’t want to write the guy off before he’s even had a chance to play, but I hear what you say.

We bliksem away two really good flyhalves from our age-group ranks and then have to go panic shopping. Makes no sense.

Should have kept Rob. Not like you muppets are using him.

  • Never going to be the best if you don’t buy the best. This guy is not the best….

I am not part of the ‘back the youngsters’ brigade, but rather back youngsters then go shopping for no name brands.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 4) : Hopefully this guy is good and surprises, but I would still prefer we threw our money at an established super rugby player, not bet on someone not tested at anywhere near super rugby level.

  • Sharks must throw cash at Jaco van der Walt. This guy is class and won’t be starting for the Lions any time soon with Jantjies playing well. With Lambie injured he is good enough to get the Sharks 10 jersey.

Agree with the above comments, we should have held onto Robert du Preez.

  • OMW – what about Brendan Cope, Sandhile Maseko, Duncan Campbell – surely we can use one of them?

  • @Julesgr8ter (Comment 7) : Cope is injured and has signed for Jersey, apparently.

I take it you mean Sandile Kubeka… I would personally have backed him to grow into the role. Not sure what’s up with Campbell.

  • Robert du Preez should have stuck around for more than a quarter season before running to supposed greener pastures…he would have had his shot this year – now he’s stuck behind some no-name Capetonians (let’s face it, if Catrakilis is 1st choice, I’d hate to to see 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice)

    Ditto for du Plessis.

Fred on the other hand, stuck it out – he didn’t give up when Swiel was carted in, but chose to fight for his starting position…it has now paid off.

I’d prefer the Sharks back players willing to fight for their starting position, as apposed to those riding on daddy’s shoulders and past exploits.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 12) : from watching a few Comm Cup games I am guessing he is Monty Dumondt level. Hopefully he takes the gap provided. Cant see RDP and JDuP sitting too long at Province. Coleman will play CC and maybe one of them a few games. Ernst Stapelberg also in queue there at WP and he made Theron’s touring squad, something has to give. So sad considering RDP was preferred to Pollard at Junior Bokke and let go so easily, especially now that Swiel gone to England.

Planning post Strauli seems to have not worked out at all. Can only get better….

Then again, it’s not like we’ve really got anything to lose

  • Kubeka played KZN age-group rugby at flyhalf twice, and was moved to centre to accommodate Rob du Preez. Clearly when he played there on Sat, he played really well; I don’t see why he shouldn’t be backed to play there

  • This guy has talent, and it is not like Boland is known to recognise good talent even when it smacks them in the face (Willie le Roux…).

That said, it is impossible to say if he has what it takes to make it to the top level.

From the Community Cup games I watched, he is electric, good feet, good distribution.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 9) : Robert du Preez was on the fringes last year, he was loaned to Maties for the VC, Province saw a good thing, made an offer and the Sharks accepted it. No riding on past glories or daddy’s shoulders there. JL du Plessies now seems to have the inside track to the WP flyhalf berth with du Preez having to play at inside centre. I think his contract with WP is only for 2 years so hopefully he could be encouraged home soon.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 26) : I’m not sure contract negotiations are done between franchises…Robert would have accepted the deal himself (as far as my limited knowledge goes) – showing that he was unwilling to stick it out with the Sharks.

Hopefully he has learned that the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side.

  • I think we need to keep a few things in mind with this signing. No top level player is coming to come and sit 3rd in the queue. The Sharks also dont have the cash to splash on more just yet. This guy is a youngish club player who has proven himself on a decent stage, so i have no problem with it. Also what exactly have our age group players done in recent years to warrant us not looking elsewhere? Have any shone at Craven Week? u19? or u21? or Vodacom Cup? Inny Radebe been decent but he now injured. And id like we want to have more than 1 guy we bank everything on

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 28) : My point being, if Robert was willing to fight it out at the Sharks, he would have stayed…nobody forced him to join WP.

Du Preez probably felt discouraged with the acquisition of soft-man Swiel (thanks JW  ) – understandable, but that’s when I want the Sharks future 0players to grit their teeth, and prove that they deserve their place in the team.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 33) : you’re right to an extent. Robert himself had to be keen on the move and ask for the release, otherwise it would have been a non-starter.

Can’t blame a talented player for looking for gametime, though. Careers are short and exposure is everything.
