Cooper to skipper Sharks XV

The loss of a number of players to the SA Under 20 squad has forced Sharks XV coach Ryan Strudwick into a reshuffle ahead of Saturday’s match against Griquas. Super Rugby players Kyle Cooper and Paul Jordaan have been added to bolster the squad, while there’s an opportunity for new signing Garth April to get in on the action too.

Regular captain Monde Hadebe has been ruled out due to illness, making way for a fresh Kyle Cooper to take over as hooker and captain. Mthunzi Moloi starts at tighthead in a second change to the tight five, while a third sees fit-again JC Astle start at five lock for Junior Bok Hyron Andrews. In the loose trio, Sias Koen (7) and Plank Meyer (8) take over from the du Preez twins.

Heimar Williams, who started at flyhalf against Boland, has been given the week off, necessitating a shift into the number 10 jersey for Cameron Wright. Hanco Venter comes in to partner him, while Jordaan starts in his favoured number 13 jersey outside promising youngster Marra Louw – interestingly, both centres are Grey College old boys, although a good few years apart in vintage! Alcino Izaacs moves to wing in place of the injured Neil Maritz, with April to start at fullback.

The bench sees wholesale changes too; Andrew du Plessis (another old Grey) covers hooker, Marne Coetzee prop, Christiaan de Bruyn lock and Ayron Schramm the back row. De Bruyn is a former Bulls age group player who has cast his lot with the Sharks this year. The selection of two scrumhalves in the starting lineup means there’s no need for a third on the bench; Sandile Kubeka, Tyler Fisher and Charlie Mayeza are the three utility replacements.

The match takes place at Pietermaritzburg’s Woodburn Stadium and kicks off at 15h30 on Saturday.

Sharks XV: 15. Garth April, 14. Alcino Izaacs, 13. Paul Jordaan, 12. Marius Louw, 11. Tonderai Chavanga, 10. Cameron Wright, 9. Hanco Venter, 8. Johan Meyer, 7. Sias Koen, 6. Khaya Majola, 5. JC Astle, 4. Johan du Toit, 3. Mthunzi Moloi, 2. Kyle Cooper (Captain), 1. Barend Potgieter
Replacements: 16. Andrew du Plessis, 17. Marne Coetzee, 18. Christiaan de Bruin, 19. Ayron Schramm, 20. Sandile Kubeka, 21. Tyler Fisher, 22. Charles Mayeza

  • Welcome back Paul! Lekker to see his name again on a team sheet. Hoping he can stay injury free though. I would love to see him and S’bu rotate at 13 in the future. Or maybe at 15? Cam Wright at 10 though…

  • This team shows that a coach has no idea who he prefers in which position.
You sign a flyhalf so play him there. Jordaan has played zero rugby so lets start him- big call. Our forwards look a bit green..will be tough against a Griquas pack that has schooled our CC pack a number of times.

    Good luck for Saturday Sharks!

  • What’s the truth about Cooper???
Excellent back up to Bismark for awhile, preferred to Burden.
Good Currie Cup, last year.has two shit games, demoted ,left out of the tour, and now captain of the Sharks XV.
    Absolutely no logic ,or consistency.
Players in this years team have to do a lot more than play one or two bad games to be dropped.
By bringing him back as captain someone has just admitted that they have made a big mistake,or is there something else going on we haven’t been told.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 16) : Kyle Cooper isn’t moving anywhere, to my knowledge and has certainly never been linked with Toulon.

That’s why FTL’s comment, to me, was unfair.

Quade Cooper is a different story, but we’re not even talking about him. He has nothing to do with this article.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 20) : I might have jumped the gun in reporting that April was being signed as flyhalf cover. That was my understanding at the time, but he has been used exclusively at 15 by WP, so not a massive surprise that he’s been picked there.

He only arrived yesterday. Big gamble to throw him straight in at 10.

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : Yeh thats probably right. Altho he looked good at 10 in Community Cup but hard just to slot in there. Cant understand why they didnt just go with Kubeka at 10 then as he played there last week? It just seems the Sharks XV change for the sake of it. They havnt been on tv so much so cant really comment but how has Isaacs been at 15? Is Majola only guy to play every game for the Sharks XV?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 28) : yeah, Majola is the only one to start every game in the same position.

We do need to acknowledge that some of the selection decisions are out of the coach’s hands, too. You know we do not, as a rule, discuss race quotas on this site, but you are bright enough to work out that when you lose, e.g., both Hyron Andrews and Monde Hadebe, you will need to make changes elsewhere in order to comply.

  • @robdylan (Comment 29) : Yeh look i think we tend to think the selection considerations are a lot easier than they actually are. Just for me if Kubeka and Wright played last week and were good by all accounts id keep that combo. Id also keep the back 3 combo and play the newbie April off the bench when game loosens up and can just play off the cuff without too much concern for the set plays.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 30) : the info I have is that Kubeka himself doesn’t yet have the confidence to start a game of this magnitude at flyhalf. It’s one thing coming on for a 30-minute jol against a Boland side that has already given up, quite another starting against powerful Griquas.
