Cheetahs in coaching overhaul

The Cheetahs have made some rather significant changes to their coaching structures, effective on completion of this year’s Super Rugby tournament.

Naka Drotske has decided to retire from coaching, with assistant Os du Randt also released to pursue an overseas coaching opportunity.

Shimlas coach Franco Smith, who won the Varsity cup in fine style this year at his first attempt, will take over as head coach, both for Currie Cup and Super Rugby. Last year’s Currie cup coach, Rory Duncan, has been appointed Director of Rugby.

It’s interesting that the Cheetahs are now moving to a model where they have a completely hands-off Director of Rugby, similar to what Western Province have in the form of Gert Smal. It’s rather different to the current setup in Durban, where Gary Gold does the coaching himself.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : so, to get really technical for a minute, it was all about handling the reply links. I need to strip out the HTML link from the @reply part of the comment, because it’s not necessary in the app.

I had a bug that would cause the app to crash if somebody hand-edited the reply link before posting the comment. Not sure why they would do that, but some did.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : I think we should have done it properly the first time. Plum had his chance and never produced he needed to be replaced.
Under Jake I honestly don’t believe he was the problem, I personally think the players just couldn’t handle the effort required under him.
After he left we shouldn’t have brought in couches with very average track records and ex school rugby couches. If you want to be the best you have to hire the best.

Do I think instability is good? No. but until we have the best people for the job there will always be problems.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : I think the coaches we have are perfectly fine…just need to be used correctly. Let Gold be solely DOR. Anthony and Everitt to coach the forwards and backs. BMH to coach the u21 forwards with Ryan Strudwick the backs. Horak can work on defense throughout not aligned to a team. Venter can go back to CT – he not adding value. That way each guy knows his role- no blurred lines and clear responsibility.

I suspect you don’t, though, so the “could have would have should haves” unfortunately don’t add anything. We are where we are and we need to move forward. We CANNOT afford to throw the whole lot out again and start over for a 4th time.

  • one factor that you all need to bear in mind is that the Sharks cannot and will not reveal even 10% of the reasons they fired Jake White. So bear in mind that all the glib political shit you read in the press about how awesome Jake was for the Sharks is just his side of the story, nicely polished up by his mate Keohane for your enjoyment.

I know more than I’m prepared to share and I only know a tiny amount myself.

I am just of the belief that these guys are a business and as professionals should not fail so regularly to appoint the right personal. In football we see couches fired after several months if they don’t perform.

@robdylan (Comment 19) : It’s all well and good saying that but since neither you nor they will release the ‘truth’ all we can do is speculate. I don’t base my opinion on anything other than what I see (I have not read anything about it at all). All I see is that Jake has been successful and praised where ever he has gone, until the Sharks where all of a sudden the players hate him? Just doesn’t add up in my mind.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 17) : Why do you need a head coach and director of rugby? Thats my point…too many points of info and ideas. DOR oversees the Super side but Anthony and Everitt do the hands on coaching etc. Clear responsibility lines and channels of info. The forwards would kno that Anthony is in charge, and likewise Everitt with the backs. Gold setting overall environment but not involved in the nitty gritty of it.

  • @The hound (Comment 21) : the reason I raise the issue is to perhaps make all of you calling for Jake to stop and think – and to not blindly swallow the one side of the story that Keo is ramming down your throat.

Do you guys really believe that John Smit would fire a guy simply for ruffling a few feathers? Is John really going to gamble the future success of the union on the happiness of one or two players? Come on, guys, don’t be naive.

You don’t need a two page laundry list of Jake’s indiscretions to work out that you’re being sold half a story.

Each of us has a decision to make here. I decide, of the things I know or believe, which ones to write about. You decide whether to read them or not. I won’t tell you what to read, you don’t tell me what to write. Further than that, let’s not make comments about each other’s integrity since we don’t know each other.

You say to not blindly believe one side without the facts yet you’re unwilling to provide them.

Don’t mistake questioning a decision as questioning you. Your choice not to tell us I believe is lacking in journalistic integrity, does that make you a bad person? no. Good people make bad decisions.

  • I believe Jake was not fired he simply could not or would not work in this structure. Was he also perhaps expected to be caretaker Over the other coaches and not actual dir. Whatever the case no one here is in those meetings and the absence of fact we are allowed to speculate. So it is with all blogs. Besides that was 2 coaches and 1 year ago…much more interesting is what the current regime is doing or going to do to rescue and sustain.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 24) : I assume in your setup Gold would be more like Smal – staying at home and look after the entire union.

Then you would still need one coach to be in charge of the training schedule, tactics for the next match, etc. One example – successful attack nowadays requires forwards and backs to coordinate as a unit.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 35) : Gold needs to develop the overall attacking and defensive blueprint of the Union within which the team specific coaches can operate. Taking the Super side as an example…why cant Anthony and Everitt work together and develop tactics knowing what each other are doing with the forwards and backs? Why throw in another guy with other ideas? If they clash on a point then Gold’s idea takes preference. Its really simple. 2 guys each working with their groups and within the overall framework provided by Gold. If Everitt wants the forwards to do something then he just says Hey Anthony can your forwards get my backs ball like this…and then Anthony either yes yes sure or no that cant be done. Why introduce another guy to nod or shake his head?

  • What’s the point of the blog if we all just believe everything we read? Every story by every journalist has an event some facts and a lot of personal perspective, no matter what the subject. I question everything I read until I am happy that I want to believe it. When did this site go from rugby to personal attack? If anyone was a real expert you would be working for the sharks not cheering for them. The rest of us only have our own opinions right or wrong and we are entitled and I for one ask no one to agree or believe mine.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 42) : Wouldnt ultimate responsibility rest with Gold as DOR? Giving each of Anthony and Everitt the same responsibility means they both know they will both be held accountable and thus probably more invested in what they do. If say Everitt was responsible the Anthony knows another guy is there to take the fall and brunt of criticism so the pressure on him is less…
