No Sharks offer for Hendricks

The Sharks have confirmed that, contrary to media reports, they have not made any approach or offer to Bok winger Cornal Hendricks.

Hendricks, who is currently contracted to the Cheetahs, has apparently sought permission from his current franchise to enter into negotiations with other teams ahead of the 1 July window – a clear indication that he intends to move on. The Sharks may have been mentioned as a potential destination, but that information would appear to be wide of the mark. The official word from Kings Park regarding Hendricks is that there neither has been, nor is, any contact and certainly isn’t any sort of offer on the table.

The Sharks have confirmed interest in another winger, though, with talks ongoing between the union and former Junior Springbok winger Wandile Mjekevu. Mjekevu, who spent a bit of time in Durban as a junior, left to join Perpignan in France in 2013 and has matured as a player in the French league. Now 24, he’s scored 50 points for his new team in just 26 games and is apparently considering a move to the Sharks, among a number of other offers.

The official word, though, is that while talks are ongoing with Mjekevu, no agreement has yet been reached and it remains possible that the player may join another team, with Western Province also understood to be in the running for his signature.

  • As I said on twitter, if we get Mjekevu at his best I will be happy. But we are starting to full up the back line with signings, with only one forward signing announced.
The majority of players we will be losing are forwards so would like to see more signed.

Any news on the Coenie rumor Rob?

  • He is a guy who played a different brand of rugby and for a club. Hendricks has proven himself internationally and plating SA rugby. I would have gone Hendricks if it was on the table. Then again I would have spoken to sergeal Pietersen or Combrinck before either of these two. I would like to see what coaches see in this guy he sounds like a gamble ? Why can’t the sharks build wings we used to be good at it.

  • But I must add I would rather see us getting some depth at prop and a game breaker nr 8. Good 12 and 13 combo too. Jordaan good at 13 but always injured, so I have to wonder how long his career will be. Sithole the real deal but gets no game steyn probably leaving again that leaves Heimar …our depth not great at center.

  • @Ben (Comment 12) : he was.

Wandi was born in Durbs but schoold at KES. We won’t hold that second part against him, though.

I actually thought he was a very good signing for the Sharks when we picked him up as an age-group player. We didn’t have any real quality coming through at wing (still don’t) and he could have or should have developed well.

Problem was, having played Super Rugby (and scored tries) as a 19 year old, I don’t think he saw himself as an age-group player/development prospect, but probably thought he was going to get senior game time right away. He had some choice words to say about Plum and the other coaches when he left.

  • In fact, Brendan Venter reckons he doesn’t like having more than 3 newbies in a side at one time. In which case, there should be a KPI or something in the union where at least 2 or 3 young players from the academy must be developed into Super Rugby quality players per year. I hold these truths to be self evident ;-)

That’s our short coming my recommendation would be Arno Botha or engelbrecht if we still have some budget in the meantime keegan daniel should be approached? I was always a fan of kanko but it seems like time and the game has passed him by much like jp.

He was touted as the captain, and expected to lead the team.then just before the game he failed a fitness test, this was two or three games before we went on tour.Subsequently every week he continues to fail that same fitness test.
As for Keegan ,I keep seeing him moping around Gateway,he has absolutely no plans to rejoin the Sharks.I also have seen Bressler around town,,now theres a guy we let go too quickly, solid reliable tough

Like Maks, but he isn’t close to Coenie, and that includes scrumming ability. It’s going to be funny if Coenie does go, because many Sharks fans have derided him. Will be highly amusing to see them sing his praises in a Sharks jersey.

Sport24 are being a bunch of d1cks saying they can’t wait to hear what Gary Teichmann says about this signing, and that it flies in the face of Johnn Smit’s open letter.

Can we stop signing Cheetahs players now? We have the pick of the bunch. The rest, well you can’t dress up mutton as lamb. Losers are losers.
