Statement of intent

Not surprisingly, announcement of the signing of Willie le Roux received a mixed reception. But I would like to take a moment to reflect on what a big coup the management of the Sharks have actually managed to pull off.

Willie le Roux is not just an incumbent Springbok but was also an IRB (now World Rugby) player of the year nominee as recently as 2014. Willie is hot property in the rugby world and it was assumed that he would be moving to Europe once his contract at the Cheetahs expired. He will not be; he will be playing for The Sharks next season. Make no mistake, he is a big signing with an excellent pedigree.

However, a big signing is not guaranteed to be a successful one. Juan Hernandez is an obvious example from a Sharks perspective. When we factor in that le Roux will be spending some time playing in Japan, his potential positive contribution looks less set in stone.

Sometimes these things work out (think Fred Michalak), sometimes they don’t (think Juan Hernandez) and I will obviously be hoping for the former. But one thing that we can’t deny is that The Sharks still have significant pulling power and that should go some way to ease some of the concerns of the fans.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 1) : That’s the whole point. If we continue to play like we are then it doesn’t matter who we have in our team.

We need to let the ball do the work more and try to play for space instead of face.

  • All true. I really hope the coaching brains trust has started working hard on what to implement when regarding the game plan. And signing a current bok is pretty huge!

  • I think we as fans have been extremely critical of the situation at the Sharks (and with right up to a point). People are calling for the head of the CEO and the coaches, yes they have buggered up, but in JS we have a CEO that loves the Sharks trough and through. With the coaches, I think Gary Gold does have the knowledge to guide this team, yes he is having to work with one or two plonkers as assistant coaches, but just like with players, if you cant make the grade, eventually you dissapear. With a lot of the old guard leaving after the WC, we will start to see a very different team dynamic and playing style develop at the Sharks. I have a feeling that with the type of players we are targeting like Willie etc, the emphasis is on creating a attacking brand of rugby. Yes this season was one from hell, yes there are a lot of wat-ifs and if-only’s but let’s get behind our boys and trust that they will give their all to bring us back to the top where this great team belongs. Time to get rid of this negativity.

  • There will definately be a different mindset and spirit after the S15 ends. The senior players will be off to the 4 Nations Championship then Bok camps and RWC, we wont see them again this year. For me this years Currie Cup will be interesting because (hopefully) it will showcase our younger talent many of whom may very well be in next years S16 lineup. This CC will also be GG oppurtunity to stamp his brand of rugby on how he wants to go forward.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Wouldn’t mind if they streamline the structures a bit. Either get Venter full time as DOR or let him go, wouldn’t mind to see Horak go as well. Those two did the least to impress. I understand it took alot for Venter to say they didn’t focus on defence, but our attack was pretty useless this year. And Horak was appointed as a defensive coach and there was not much defensive structure to be seen. The same holes were evident week in and week out and the other teams punished us for that.

Gold really needs to put his stamp on the team during the CC, he’s been here a few months now so he should have settled a bit.

I just feel they are not going about it the right way, the players ‘leaving’ are some of the best the Sharks have ever had. They should be honoring them as well as using it as a chance to pull a crowd.

  • I would like to see the complete coaching set up for next years Super Rugby getting stuck into the Currie Cup. Create the foundation of the team for Super Rugby 2015 and the style of play the coaching team would like to see on the field. Fix the holes in the game like the glaring one of defence. Then add to this foundation the Boks and overseas players as they become available. They will need to work their way into the team. We will be loosing a lot of the Boks after the World Cup so the Currie Cup will be a very good opportunity for the the ‘new” team and coaches to gel. This crap with different coaches for different tournaments has to stop.
