Big guns return for Sharks

Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold has been able to name a strong team to take on the Stormers in this weekend’s final Super Rugby match at Kings Park.

All eyes will be on the pack, where stalwart Bismarck du Plessis, making a record 130th appearance, joins brother Jannie du Plessis and flanker Willem Alberts in donning the Sharks jersey for the last time.

The du Plessis brothers will play one last time in black and white alongside their adopted sibling Beast Mtawarira in a front row combination that has come to epitomise the Sharks over the last five seasons or so. Captain Marco Wentzel, again picked in the number 5 jersey, has a new lock partner in Etienne Oosthuizen this week. With the loose forward injury crisis finally over, the way has been paved for Oosthuizen to move back to the number 4 jersey for which he seems to have been designed.

Renaldo Bothma plays at 8, with the Bok flank pairing of Marcell Coetzee and Alberts reunited after missing out against the Rebels a fortnight ago.

There is backline continuity; Stefan Ungerer and Lionel Cronje continue at halfback, with Andre Esterhuizen at inside centre after spending most of the last few games at wing. Newly married JP Pietersen will ahve to put any thoughts of honeymoon behind him as he starts at 13; the back three of S’bura Sithole, Odwa Ndungane and Lwazi Mvovo remains unchanged.

Dale Chadwick replaces Matt Stevens as loosehead cover on the bench, with Giant Mtayanda and Khaya Majola taking their places as lock and loose forward cover respectively.

Also on the bench is Cheetahs-bound Fred Zeilinga, who will make his own final appearance in the jersey he’s worn since his school days, should he take the field.

Sharks: 15 Lwazi Mvovo, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 S’bura Sithole, 10 Lionel Cronje, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Renaldo Bothma, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Marco Wentzel (capt), 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Dale Chadwick, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Giant Mtayanda, 20 Khaya Majola, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Fred Zeilinga, 23 Heimar Williams

  • Nice team I approve. I find it mind blowing that Lambie is still injured, they must have really downplayed the severity.

  • Wish we could have had Lambie and steyn in one last time Reinach not so much. I’ll be glad when JP joins boks or back to japan he is in wrong position and hogging the spot. Gold only learns through pain so I db he is forced b to be without these guys maybe he will get it thru his thick skull. Bit like HM eventually picking le roux not by choice but being forced by circumstance.

I think they just don’t see good enough reason to risk him. It’s best that he recovers completely. A Neck injury is not something to play around with.

  • Great looking team! Wished that Lambie could play, but a bit pointless to risk him in a closing nothing game. Pretty sure the boks have him wrapped in cotton wool! Any news on how long Steyn will be out for?

  • @Another Nick (Comment 17) : so, here’s the thing.

Do I believe, even for a second, that John Smit hasn’t put the biggest contract he can conceivably put together, in front of either player? Of course not. Smit has saved a fair bit of money in other places, so he can “break the bank” for these players.

Do I believe that there is any reason Smit would not want to re-contract either player? Definitely not.

So if there is an issue, it’s got nothing to do with the Sharks not being willing and able to come to the party financially. Any issue preventing either player re-signing must be a non-financial one and would have to be related to their perception of the current setup and prospects in Durban. That is more difficult to address and is frankly out of our hands in the short term.

I guess what I’m saying is that Smit can throw as much money at them as he likes, but if they have other reasons for wanting to leave, then they will leave.

  • @robdylan (Comment 21) : Well said Rob, and very true. I think it is very important to understand that it is not always a money issue (PSTD’s family is in CPT etc). I guess that with most players moving around unions, locally and abroad, it is usually financially related. So when one of our own leaves for “greener pastures” (whatever they may be), we shouldn’t be too quick to judge and demand Smit’s head because he couldn’t hold on to them.

  • Probably the best side the Sharks can put out…the prob the Sharks have had all year is not the names on the teamsheet but the application by those names. Its all about mental attitude especially on defense…and that has been lacking this year. Far too many soft and error ridden moments. Possibly a lack of fitness generally leading to these soft mental moments?

On a serious note I hope Coetzee has the balls to send a proper team here for our final game and not the B team that rolled over and got so horribly raped in the Vodacom cup final.
We deserve the game we have desperately hoped all year to see,and we need decent opposition for that to happen.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 31) : I think we are all aware of the fact that WP have not signed PSDT and Coetzee but have expressed an interest. My issue firstly is us allowing other unions a gap to even try tempt our players. Surely your cream of the crop young guys should be given a contract longer than 2 years like what WP did with Eben, Siya and Kisthoff…the Lions signed all their players a few weeks ago before the mad season. From the outside it still looks like we are flying solo without radar. This PSDT issue has been on the news for months now still no contract from the Sharks. What is our strategy at the Sharks. If it is to regain our former glory this Marcel and PSDT discussion would be a non starter. They would have been secured by now.

  • @Another Nick (Comment 28) :

Maybe players who have not yet been confirmed to stay, has simply not yet committed to a contract with the Sharks and are still considering their options, which means Sharks management has as much an idea of the answer, as we do.

Remember, officially the players were only allowed to start negotiating deals with other unions recently, which means, whatever WP is offering Marcel and PSDT can only now be discussed officially and openly with all parties involved.

I suppose, at this stage no News is still leaning towards bad news, as both players must still then be negotiating and considering their options – hopefully only driving their “price” up, but still intending to sign the bigger deal on offer from the Sharks, but still, it’s not good not to have a confirmed contract with both these players.

Holding my breath until this can be confirmed…

He does have a binding contract with the Sharks and says(via my insider) that he himself has no plans to go to the Cape and is more than happy with the Sharks franchise and his contract.
The agents tend to leak the info to try and influence their commission.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 64) : mate, we have no shortage of big boys. We just need to teach them skills early enough in their careers. That’s where we fall down. We pick the big kids and let their size compensate for their lack of skill

The one they’re sending this year looks capable of doing it again. Good team that, with plenty of potential… I’d love to have some of those guys starting for us.

  • @Letgo (Comment 68) : Did you watch the Vodacom cup final, man it was a joke,Mallet, Skinstadt, and that plonker Pearce must have mentioned that Western Province were unbeaten 50 times before, during and after the game.
They were given a thrashing by a team that played three away games en route to the final.
Mallet who had already crowned them champions at half time came up with some crap that it was an unfair contest men against boys,he actually had the gall to say that. His mate Dobson threw a glass at the press box window, and lard arse Shimange who was the forwards coach is still in a fat sulk.
    Talk about pre mature ejaculation.

  • @The hound (Comment 70) :

You keep on referring to the final as if its relevant. That was the last decent committed game the Sharks played and it was like 16 or 17 games back.
Setting yourself up for some serious egg face.

    Please carry on.

  • It hasn’t been a great week for teams with “last game” players. Just ask Bakkies and Toulon.

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 85) : Lol yeah they got mauled in the scrums too. Liked to see Heinke vd Merwe again – I really rated him when he was at Lions. Then again that SF scrum was good the previous week too.

  • @RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 84) : Sadly I agree and to think he was one of my favourite players so dangerous on the wing. Maybe our coach is doing him a disservice. I really think he could do incredible damage on wing. Esterhuizen can do his job on center maybe even better. Why is Frans Steyn not in?
