Not much to be said about hooker

Yesterday we started looking at the potential squad compilation of the Springboks to the Rugby World Cup, which yielded very little debate for or against the props mentioned. Whether this is a good or bad thing remains to be seen.

It could be that we all simply agree with the few names that are likely to go, but it is more the fact that the Springboks have limited quality props to choose from which puts us in this position. And I feel that we are going to have as little debate about today’s position – Hooker.

There are two stand out players in coach Meyer’s eyes: Bismarck du Plessis and Adriaan Strauss. Both of them have been rotated over the last couple of seasons, with Meyer actually preferring Strauss a few times during last year’s Rugby Championship.

The simple fact is that those two players will not miss out on World Cup selection, bar injury of course, and that we have single spot remaining in the tour group. To assign that spot though, is no easy task.

Looking across the Super Rugby squads, I fail to see a single player raising their hand to make this World Cup squad. You may think that Scarra Ntubeni has the inside lane, seeing as he made the squad last year, but has he shown any improvement or drive to go from a backup hooker to being a first choice stand out?

Players to choose from include Bongi Mbonambi from the Stormers, Callie Visagie from the Bulls, Akker van der Merwe or Robbie Coetzee from the Lions. I wouldn’t go as far as including any Sharks hookers, as neither Kyle Cooper nor Franco Marais deserve a mention. That’s a pretty sad state of affairs and I can imagine that Meyer will default to Ntubeni and get this position finalised early on in his decision making.

My question to you is: What are we going to do after the World Cup, once Bismarck has left? Obviously Adriaan Strauss will be our go to guy, but that would mean the Boks are one injury away from a crises at hooker. Do you see any of the guys bubbling under stepping up to become a world class hooker? Who?

  • I agree on the 2 hookers and i dont think its clear who the 3rd hooker is as you have said Richard, no other hooker has stood out. I think post world cup there are 2 candidates that can be succesful. Firstly there is Sharks hooker Marais, who has had average performances thus far but has potential to be great. Secondly i think Lions hooker Malcolm Marx is one for the future. He has the talent and ability to go very far. Thats my opinion. The Tank had another great game last night for the baby boks at tighthead

  • I will completely unbiasedly say Chris design Beer is the future :D . If he actually gets to play for the Sharks senior side some day that is.

  • I truly believe that Malcolm Marx has the potential to become the next Bismarck. Just a shame he is playing for the Lions…

  • @willemv10 (Comment 2) : Franco has, to me, battled to assert himself physically in Super Rugby. That’s a worry. Bissie didn’t battle at the same age, nor did Cooper.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : I did indeed, Thanks.

Also I might be somewhat joking, but it is legitimately why Jake White suggested he move to Hooker, because he saw him as very much a John Smit type player.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 10) : move to hooker from what position? I thought he’d always been a hooker (although there was some attempt to turn him into a loosehead)

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Nope he only moved there when Jake White did some coaching at Hilton. Before that he moved around a couple times, making the U16 SA High Performance Squad side at prop I believe, then spent some time between 8th man and prop and then made the move to hooker.

  • Bissie has inside lane, but i dont think strauss has done that much to be excited about. The lions hooker of coetzee and then the 2 stormers hookers i feel should be the backups

  • Bissie and Strauss will def be 1 and 2 unless injury strikes. #rd choice could be interesting…HM could be clever here and try either of the dynamic Schalk Brits or Craig Burden altho neither have set the world alight in Europe this year. Robbie Coetzee and Scarra Ntubeni both been part of the mix before but either would just be a guy to plug a hole rather than adding much value. So for me its Bissie, Struass and Brits

  • I haven’t watched a lot of Stormers games this season, but from the ones I watched Bongi impressed me more than Scarra.

  • Funny how Kyle Cooper went from hero 2 seasons ago to zero after admittedly a few poor performances. In my mind, he is a proper old skool hooker, powerful in the scrums and loose. He just need to sort his line-out throwing. I would give him another chance. Malcolm Marx is probably the future, but too me he is too tall for hooker.
