Down to business for Junior Springboks

With formalities a thing of the past, the World Rugby Under-20 Championship has reached the business end of this year’s tournament as four teams will face off in the semi-finals in Calvisano, Italy tonight.

New Zealand will be facing France in the first semi-final with South Africa and defending champions England clashing in the second semi-final.

South Africa have had a relatively easy run to the semi-finals after bonus-point victories over Italy (33 – 5), Samoa (40 – 8) and Australia (46 – 13) saw them qualify at the top of their pool.

Junior Springboks coach Dawie Theron has mainly stuck with the team that beat the Aussies a few nights ago, only making one change to his starting lineup and one on the bench.

“We know this tournament is a marathon and not a sprinting race and we therefore have to be sensible with our player management process. All the players are fit and in good shape and now they must go out and do the business,” said Theron.

Western Province’s Rikus Bothma takes over from Jacques Vermeulen at flank, while Eastern Province’s Malcolm Jaer replace Grant Hermanus on the bench.

“We are not looking at England’s previous result (they lost to France in their final pool match). They are in the semi-finals and will be looking to play in a third successive final. We know they will be highly motivated and will definitely have a good plan against us,” said Theron.

Theron and his conditioning staff have managed the activities of the Junior Springboks squad very carefully during the past few days in an effort to keep them fresh.

“Although we have seen some rain here the past few days, the weather is still hot and humid and we therefore tried to give the players as much rest as possible.

“They are refreshed again and I am very pleased with their attitude and readiness. Earlier today (Sunday) we took them for an outing to Maranello, which they thoroughly enjoyed, and will finish off our preparations with the captains run in the early evening,” added to Theron.

Kick-off at 8:30pm and the match will be televised live on SuperSport.

  • Jeepers but reffing inconsistency is an issue. In the game between Scotland and Australia at the u20 champs, a Scot got a yellow for a run of the mill high tackle…New Zealand have just had 2 high tackles in 2 minutes and not a card in sight…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 5) : it’s a global rule of the game that New Zealand players do not get carded for high tackles or shoulder charges. Just the way it is.

  • Baby boks are being robbed in this game, its 19 against 15 players here. Shaun Veltsman is ‘n gemors, sorry to say it. But how is that not an obstruction and those cards are controversial to say the least. Mxm, I hate it when an all black or aussie is in charge of our fate in such an important game.

If they are strict on it and they card the Scot and card the two baby Boks AND CARD THE THREE BABY BLACKS AND CARD THE RIDICULOUS SHOULDER CHARGE BY THE POM…well, then that’s fine. The inconsistency threatens credibility not the strictness…
