Four weeks for Andre

Andre Esterhuizen has been banned for four weeks after his lifting tackle against the Stormers htis weekend; however, the news is better than it could be, given that Esterhuizen’s suspension will not prevent him from playing any Currie Cup games.

In a rather convoluted explanation (which follows below), Judicial Officer Nigel Hampton QC concluded that Esterhuizen’s tackle – a mid range offence – warranted a 4 week ban, with an additional 2 week deterrent added. However, a guilty plea coupled with the mitigating factors of the player’s youth and previously good record saw the 6 week ban reduced again to 4 weeks.

Stormers player Robert du Preez was less fortunate. His tackle was deemed worse and has been punished with a 6-week ban.

The SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Nigel Hampton QC has accepted a guilty plea from Andre Esterhuizen of the Sharks for contravening Law 10.4 (j) Lifting Tackle, after he was cited following a Super Rugby match at the weekend.

Esterhuizen has been suspended from all forms of the game for four weeks up to and including Sunday 19 July 2015.

The incident occurred in the 10th minute of the Super Rugby match between the Sharks and Stormers at Growthpoint KINGS PARK in Durban on 13 June 2015.

SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Nigel Hampton QC assessed the case.

In his finding, Mr Hampton ruled the following:

“I initially reviewed the video footage, the Citing Commissioner’s report and the reports from the referee and TMO. I established that the player, Andre Esterhuizen, accepted he was guilty of the cited offence and I then identified the various factors involved in the incident.

“I considered the incident had an entry point in the low end range which starts at a four-week suspension for lifting tackles. It appeared from the video that the actions of the Sharks’ halfback had some effect on the Stormers’ player as he came to ground on his upper body. However, Esterhuizen was clearly the major contributor to this dangerous tackle, which he accepted.

“I then added two weeks as a deterrent to send a further message that this type of tackle cannot be tolerated in the game due to the risk it poses to players. There have been a number of decisions relating to lifting tackles this year with a deterrent increase of this size being added. An increase to this level of deterrent may be required in the future as the additional two-week increase to sanction does not seem to be having the required effect of getting rid of these tackles.

“Mitigating factors included the player admitting his guilt for the offence, being contrite for his actions and apologising to the tackled player. His good disciplinary record and youth were also taken into account. These mitigating factors entitled the player to a 50 per cent reduction of the four week entry point, so a reduction of two weeks, which resulted in a four-week sanction.

“The Sharks’ Super Rugby season is finished for 2015 and as such, the player’s commitments are now to his club, Varsity College Old Boys. I was provided with written confirmation that the club’s next three matches, in which the player would have played, take place over the next four weeks, plus a compulsory pre-Currie Cup match that the player would have been expected to play in for the Sharks.

“The player is accordingly found to have contravened Law 10.4 (j) and is suspended up to and including Sunday 19 July 2015.”

  • Esterhuizen will have to look at his tackle technique. He starts of well, shoulder down, head on the right side of the tackle, but the instead of driving forward with his legs he tends to drive up. He’s a strong boy, so if he doesn’t get this sorted he’ll make many more dangerous tackles.

If you can’t even shine with your contemporaries in VC why should you keep getting a shot in the bigger leagues? Cause if you want to win Sr you must have a ready now player not a work in progress and even in some critical CC games against on form opponents. And who steps in while he is not playing the premier League games? We need a ready now guy to keep the continuity going but who will be good enough and young enough now and also accept the fact that Andre will ultimately replace him when ready.

  • Fortunately I have seen little SR the past two years, as being a sharks (banana boys) supporter for 40 odd years, the quality of rugby has been disgusting.

However, if we can take the last 40 minutes of Saturdays game, going forward then we have a good base.

I’m probably a lone voice in the wilderness really Esterhuisen, I like this kid. He is a monster in the tackle and pretty quick as well. With decent coaching (this has been our downfall for two seasons) he will go far. He has a great pass as well, which is evident when play opened up.

I have hope……….. Now lets get a Stonehouse, Deans as coach and one or two more marquee signings and I’ll be a happy chappy.

If you think that Stefan (legend that he was) was a decent centre or brought balance to the back line then I suggest we cease this discussion immediately and part amicably.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 17) : stop with the bulking up shit!!! Heimar is a player with vision and skills not a “crash-it-up” pony!! And please tell me what did Frans do this year that’s so much better than what Andre did?

  • @robdylan (Comment 52) : ja must say when I saw it (before TMO call) I told my wife if it was reverse and a Stormers try I would be a bit upset so ja a hometown decision but I’ll take it after the season we had.

  • @robdylan (Comment 63) : while we’re talking of Butch it seems as if Esterhuizen has some of Butch’s “red mist” with him doing something stupid every now and again!!!

  • @Big Fish (Comment 73) : No one said at Centre and no one said he brought the balance on that when he last played (timeframe) there was balance.

  • @JD (Comment 74) : Hold onto a pass for one thing. Run an angle or different play now and then instead of just crash lose repeat….just for starters.

  • @JD (Comment 74) : No one said he must be a crash it up. If you bothered to read and understand ribs comment was that he didn’t have the stopping power on defence not offence. And why not bulk up. Spies bulked up and he is just as fast no one said gain 100 pounds just enough upper body mass to take a decent hit and deliver one. It’s not like players of vision never have to tackle and put bodies on the line or do you know centers who never get tackled or have to make any?

What?! Harsher than other lifting tackle bans?! Have they not been checking out the bans imposed on South Africans for lifting tackles? And Speight’s attempt just looked much worse than most! No buddy…in a world were Frans got 5, Andre got 4, Robert got 6 and so on…your 5 seems eminently fair!
