Please see the release below regarding a unique opportunity to get some honest insights from Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold. Be aware that Sharksworld is not officially involved in this event in any way – we’re just raising awareness since it seems an interesting opportunity for fans.

THE GARY GOLD “FACING THE MUSIC” BREAKFAST!

It hasn’t been fun being a Sharks fan this season. Tipped as possible top two finishers at the start of the season, the campaign has lurched from one disaster to another. A home defeat against the Cheetahs set the tone as injury and ill discipline undermined all the good intentions of the players and coaching staff. The Sharks’ play-off hopes effectively ended a few weeks back and the final two home matches offered only the chance to regain lost pride.

Coach Gary Gold has been at the centre of the storm all the way through. Having only arrived a week or two before the tournament began Gold was always playing catch up and working things out as he went along. Not an ideal situation and it appears that the whole structure has suffered as a result. So what went wrong? Rather than keep his head below the trenches as the bullets fly, Gold has agreed to face the fans and answer the tough questions at a breakfast in Durban on Friday 10 July.

· Why has discipline on the field been such an issue?
· How has recent coach turnover impacted on the team?
· Why are so many Sharks players being injured?
· Why are so many Sharks players opting to play overseas? Are the Du Plessis brothers, Willem Alberts and Frans Steyn joining Jake White in France?
· What about the captaincy conundrum? Who will captain the side going forward?
· What role does Brendan Venter play? Does he only pop in on Monday and then fly back to Cape Town? How does this muddle strategy and tactics?
· What has happened to the once thriving Sharks Academy? Outside recruitment now seems the preferred squad-building strategy with players from the Pumas and overseas arriving regularly. The Cheetahs have also been raided.
· Why are the Sharks junior teams making little impact in the various national competitions?
· Just how healthy are the Sharks player structures from junior to senior level going forward?

It won’t be an easy morning for Gold but he is determined to front up and take a hard look at his first Super Rugby season and look ahead to how he intends fixing things. The recent acquisitions of Jacques Potgieter, Willie le Roux, Philip van der Walt, Joe Pietersen and possibly Cornal Hendricks suggests he is hard at work building his own squad.

  • The logic of playing Hoffmann ahead of Ungerer and Wright at the beginning of the season; as well as Murray ahead of Williams?

Credit to Gold. Fans love transparency. I fear it won’t be an easy morning for the man.

  • Wasn’t Gold fired as director of rugby at Bath?
If so in what way is he qualified to take up that position here.
Any new head coach coming in is still going to have him hanging around as well as Venter, can’t see a decent heavyweight coach of the calibre of Deans or Mitchell opting for this situation.
Clean both these guys out and bring in a heavy weight,or else we are going to be treated to another Gold apology at the end of the Currie Cup.

  • @The hound (Comment 5) : Although it does depend on exactly how the structures are defined. Reports from people I know re: Gold in Bath indicate that he did good work there but ultimately a personality clash ended in him being bumped out (some of that was reflected in the reporting of the time too). So I’m prepared to give him a shot at this…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 7) : Sure lots of people on this site thought he was going to be a great coach as well,
This is what pisses me off after we cleaned out B.J and his collective of professional hangers on it looked like we were headedt for a brand new beginning, young successful rugby hero C,E.O.,Billionaire chairman,World Cup winning coach.
How quickly it all soured, and we now we are getting back into B.J’s ways,Venter with no real responsibilty but a huge salary and now Gold with a desk job huge salary and no responsibility.
Making Brad the scapegoat here is laughable, since Gold arrived he has been totally side lined.
Sure get rid of him he hardly needs the job,but that is not going to solve the problem.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 17) : Iam not related to him,but have known him for a long time, mainly as a great Sharks player in a great Sharks team.
My allegiance to him stemmed from the fact that he is Natal born and bred with a genuine Sharks pedigree that runs in his veins, unlike other recently transplanted mercenaries.
I always felt and know that he is a man of integrity and has a huge genuine allegiance to this province and it’s rugby.
Maybe now you can tell us why you dislike him so much.

  • @The hound (Comment 18) : I have no personal dislike of Brad; I liked the player, and I like the bits that I have seen of the man; I’m just curious why you always react so vehemently to any suggestions that he may not have been cutting the mustard as a coach. I’m neither close enough, nor connected enough to make an objective assessment of his credentials. Certainly the general consensus is that he was just not up to the challenge, with yours being one of the longer (and prominent) voices of dissent. So just curious, that’s all.

Most people on here will tell you Venter won that.
Anything goes right its because of Venter, anything goes wrong blame Brad,or Sean or Paul.

Don’t try to book for this, because they’ve cancelled the event, citing uncertainty about the Sharks coaching structures.

    What a crock of shit
