Dual Sharks boost for Leopards

Two current Sharks players have headed down to Potchefstroom to add depth to the Leopards squad and aid them in their quest for Currie Cup Premier League qualification.

Winger Sizo Maseko and scrumhalf Hanco Venter, neither of whom managed to crack the nod for a match 23 spot in Super Rugby this year despite playing Currie Cup rugby in 2014, have both been drafted into Robert du Preez’s squad and will be available for immediate selection for the upcoming second-round qualifier against the Valke.

We know that Maseko will head back to Durban ahead of the Currie Cup proper, while Venter’s situation is less clear. With Michael Claassens coming in to join Cobus Reinach, Conrad Hoffmann and Stefan Ungerer in the Sharks squad, you’d think Venter may well be considering options elsewhere. Then again, since Cameron Wright has left for Montpellier, you’d fancy that Venter may opt to stick around for a while longer, in the hope of a Currie Cup breakthrough this year.

  • Rob I asked this before and I am not sure if you missed it or didn’t have an answer for me, so I will ask again just in case.

Is there any confirmation on what has happened to Jack Wilson and Paul Perez?

I shock myself saying this, but if we lose JPP with Odwa getting very long in the tooth, Lwazi doing well at fullback and Sithole a wing come center, even with the Willie signing we could start to look a little shallow at wing.

  • Hoffman gets a bit of a raw deal in my mind. Hes never managed a long run without injury and to be fair nobody tries harder!

  • Hano Venter i believe was a good age group player but not sure if he will make the step up. Maseko is a good player and very surprised he hasnt had a bigger look in. he is big and quick (note the HM keywords). Not sure what was done with Wilson…as he impressed em the very rare chances he got. Perez is more up and down and his defense isnt great

  • @Seth101 (Comment 17) : I would like to see a backline: 15 SP/Van Tonder, 14 Wilson, 13 S’bu/Jordaan, 12 Heimar/Esterhuizen, 11 Mvovo, 10 Cronje, 9 Ungerer. Pretty decent I would say.

  • Goodluck to them both – hope they get much needed playing time.
I would also like if Wilson gets some more game time in CC. Don’t recall if I have seen Maseko play but sounds like he has all the attributes a wing needs

  • @Seth101 (Comment 20) : S’bu for me is better at 13 than wing. He has been pretty decent at wing in SR, but at 13 he is devastating. I would even go as far as to say if he gets a proper run at 13 in CC and SR next year, he will be knocking on the Springboks door very soon.

  • No doubt he deserves another crack but at this stage I don’t get the fascination with S’bu at 13, i have to admit. Yes he has impressed defensively there when given a chance, but IMO he lacks spacial awareness and handling ability at this stage, to be considered a world-class threat there. He has pace, and he runs straight and hard, this is why he is a such a threat in close from the blind-side wing. Until such time as he displays the deft skill required for centre rather than dying with the ball there – and it happened many times – he should remain on the left wing.

  • @Another Nick (Comment 21) : Honestly I don’t mind. I just want Mvovo at fullback over SP  Sbu at center and Jordaan at wing, or anything like that.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 9) : not his finest moment but does anyone remember andre jouberts first season at the sharks. He was absolutely terrible. I remember him taking a kick infront and not making the corner flag. Now im not saying hes in tgat legue but injuries and a lack of confidence tend to go together and this boy has more to offer. Hes also been messed around alot. As a third choice we could always do worse

  • @Another Nick (Comment 21) : I have my doubts about him at 13, at wing he is definitely a great choice.

  • @neilster (Comment 22) : Iagree with you- at the moment Sithole has the attributes to make a good wing as he is quick and runs hard and straight…and IF he looks for work he could become a Bok wing. At 13 if all he does is run hard then he will be easy to defend as opposition know there would be an offload or grubber etc. He needs to add more touches and passing ability to be a 13

  • @byron (Comment 24) : Will have Joe Pietersen won’t we? He should get the fb slot. Odwa or Chavs at wing with Jack Wilson. sbura with Heimar on center or Esterhuizen williams or Sbura and Jordaan on center once Paul is ready. I agree with the article that prop is going to be a problem I wonder if we will see another signing or two in the next 2-4 weeks. Pity that Steyn couldn’t stay for CC as well would have been good to see him and sithole on center Jordaan on wing with Wilson or even Heimar spending some time at wing. I would not want to lose Heimar he is valuable.
