Montpellier confirms du Plessis signings

It’s taken a while to get there (and who knows how much behind-the-scenes wrangling was required), but Boks Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis were finally revealed as Montpellier players yesterday.

The French club, who are in the midst of a complete overhaul in style under the tutelage of Jake White, announced that the hooker and tighthead prop, who emotionally bid farewell to the Sharks last Saturday, have each signed a 3-year deal.

With White having signed a raft of South African players since taking over – including Pierre Spies, Jacques du Plessis and Wiaan Liebenberg from the Bulls and another Shark in scrumhalf Cameron Wright – questions are being asked in France about the inevitable culture change at Montpellier, considered an important nursery for French players renowned for the characteristic flair that has come to epitomise the Gallic style of play.

White’s way, as always, will rather emphasise forward dominance and rigid structure, with a kicking flyhalf in WP man Demetri Catrikilis more likely to feature than mercurial French pivot Francois Trinh-Duc. It remains to be seen just how viable a strategy this turns out to be long term, in a place where style is valued every bit as much as results.

  • Must say Montpellier is starting to look like the Saracens of French rugby with all the Saffas in there.

I’m slightly pleased that Jake White is undermining French rugby culture from the inside

  • JW is doing a job, he wants to win and that’s all that matters.

  • I’m sorry but I find this sooooo funny. If some people are to be believed it was these two who were part of pushing Jake out of the Sharks because they didn’t like his strict approach to training and full work days. And then by complete chance they signed for a club that shortly after would hire Jake as their coach.

If this is how it went down then it is the best case of F’you karma ever, and I love it!

  • I still say Bissie and Jannie would much rather go stay on their farm. They don’t need to go to France, also consider that their dad is ill. So being in France for 3 years is not really something they would do if they hated JW.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 10) : If they had signed the contract including a massive buyout clause before he was announced as the coach, they wouldn’t have a choice.

  • So finally Montpellier unveils some class players and it transpires that they were bought before Whites time.

  • @The hound (Comment 14) : I like the Aussies that he signed. We could do with van der Merwe and Willemse but for the rest Im really not sure. They are obviously good players but none are in the league of the Du Plessis brothers as far as “wow” signings go. Its hard, and going to get harder, to compare players bought/retained purely because of the value of the rand compared to the Euro etc.

  • That Jaques du Pleases is only 21 years old and he held his own for the Bulls the whole year.
I am amazed they let him go.

  • @The hound (Comment 16) : Hes a Pongola boy. Hey I dont know, Im not so mad about him but for a 21 year old he has punched well above his weight. He needs to do something with his hair though because he cant stop himself from touching it while he should rather be concentrating on the game, the Du Preez twins have the same problem.

  • @The hound (Comment 18) : I dont remember Schalk ever tucking in his hair behind his ears before he could engage his brain to make his next play. I actually dont remember any of them fiddling with their hair. My problem is not with long hair its with hair distracting you from your task.

  • Its a bit bizarre seeing Duanne Vermeulen being unveiled to the press at Toulon, wearing his new colours, when his Stormers team is playing in a quarter final in 2 days time.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 5) : Probably the most accurate statement. JW has a reputation for winning not growing unions. Which may be why his tenure is always so short everywhere.

  • So I don’t know quite where to put this:
    http://www.supersport.com/rugby/article.aspx?Id=3063524
    Interesting news…my thoughts:
    1. I’m not thrilled to have all our guys play in Japan until so close before the start of Super Rugby. When will they rest? Will they be able to prepare properly with our squad?
    2. I do get, though, that it is part of the rugby landscape now and that w don’t have much choice if we want to keep these guys.
    3. There is one gem in this article though: The sentence that Marcell will be returning to the Sharks after his stint in Japan. Is that official? I hope so! In that case…YAY!!!!
