Marcell the latest Japanese “casualty”

Marcell Coetzee will represent the Honda Heat side in Japan at the end of this year, with his agents having confirmed a short-term deal between November 2015 and January 2016.

Coetzee, who is widely expected to be part of the Springboks’ World Cup squad, will seemingly look at the Japanese deal as a way to provide a bit of a financial boost before returning to South Africa to play Super Rugby.

The Supersport website suggests that Coetzee will return to the Sharks after his spell with Honda, but I find it rather ominous that the tweet from In Touch Sports on which their story is based doesn’t actually say that. We know that Coetzee is out of contract at the end of this year and since the Sharks haven’t announced a new deal, it’s perhaps fair to assume that one hasn’t been concluded yet – sources continue to link the Stormers and Western Province with a big offer for the player.

Two other players from the In Touch stable have concluded Japanese deals of similar length, but in the case of the Bulls’ JJ Engelbrecht and the Lions’ Andries Ferreira, both were confirmed as returning to those respective teams for Super Rugby in 2016.

We await clarification from both the Sharks and In Touch as to exactly which jersey Marcell Coetzee will wear when he returns to South Africa at the end of January next year.

  • As I said before thank you Japan for letting us share, it is the only way we will be able to keep our players.

  • @The hound (Comment 1) : 1. I’m not thrilled to have all our guys play in Japan until so close before the start of Super Rugby. When will they rest? Will they be able to prepare properly with our squad?
    2. I do get, though, that it is part of the rugby landscape now and that w don’t have much choice if we want to keep these guys.

  • I see Alistair Coetsee has been moaning about the lack of a fetcher, frustrating because it has been abundantly clear ever since Deon Fourie left for Lyon, so the Marcell interest would be understandable. PSDT may come down to the player wanting to be closer to home. Seems the rumours may have some substance, but the WP admin are truly appalling, I cant personally see the deals happening.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 12) : I dont think south african corporations focus so much on rugby . We can see that in for example Vodacom limiting its sponsorship of the South African rugby teams a few years back (when they use to sponsor the Stormers , Bulls and Cheetahs).

More about the general public interest .

  • @pastorshark (Comment 12) : But they are not going to sink money into a pit, they don’t make their money by being generous, they must see reward from their investment.

Personally I find the lack of money in South African rugby very weird. There is no reason Japanese teams should be able to pay more then our teams. Especially considering their currency is weaker then ours so they must pay boat loads.

Considering these guys go over there during the CC, is it maybe that CC salaries are sub par compared to Super Rugby salaries and international salaries? If so that should be changed.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 11) : that’s a little naive.

Japan have the third largest economy in the world. South Africa comes 33rd. It’s got very little to do with what the specific monetary unit is “worth”…. it’s to do with how many of them you have!

  • I’m just googling a bit. Japan does have the fourth biggest player base in the world. That coupled with the fact that Japan has the second largest developed economy in the world (3rd according to nominal GDP and 4th according to purchasing power) must surely explain it. Our economy (according to purchasing power) is SIX times smaller than Japan’s. That would be your answer?

  • @Seth101 (Comment 11) : As much as anyone doesn’t want to admit it part of the allure of Japan,is that it is a relatively easy gig,the standard is about club level yet the pay exceeds a Super rugby contract plus a Bok contract
So its a double win more pay and a helluva lot less pain.
Super rugby has become far too excessive,to play 16 matches each with test intensity in limited period is a career limiting experience. Then to follow it with a four nations a full season of Currie Cup is quite insane.Any player with half a brain will opt for the Japan option,

  • @Seth101 (Comment 24) : The comparison is a bit pointless…the viewer numbers are so much bigger in Spanish Football and in football in general that you can’t compare it! Of course there will be money in football due to much, much bigger viewer numbers. But in a sport like rugby, where the viewer numbers are lower, the economic factor must play a role. The fact is the Japanese corporations are investing much more money in rugby…and so the clubs there can pay what they do. Maybe they are also investing in future expansion of the game?

The Stormers were beaten into a pulp and the lost tight head to seven men on the opponents goal line really underlined that.
That two guys could make such a difference was amazing but it also showed what our season could have been like if Bismark and Alberts had played their part the whole season.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 28) : Well, first of all they are clearly getting paid more than they would if they DIDN’T play! Remember, they are not losing their SA contracts! They play a bit of low intensity rugby for a few weeks and get a lot of EXTRA money. They don’t have to compare it to what they earn in SA. And again…it is about how many yen they receive. Obviously if they got R1mil and 1mil yen obviously the rands are worth more. But that is not what is happening. They are getting many, many more yen…

Just could not waste another 40 minutes of my life watching the same old rubbish. The Duane in Toulon unveiling has upset a lot of us older supporters, not sure if that contributed to the smaller crowd. By now we so used to the big choke here in CT we almost expect it. The Stormers were poor most season other than the win in Sydney. The lineouts have been an ongoing shambles and the lack of a proper opensider has been exposed all year…..We should be breaking the bank for a Brussow or Deon Fourie…..as for our flyhalves, the less said the better….no balance in the side and sadly our small back 3 get taken avantage off….

I know they were intereted in Joe Pietersen, but werent willing to really fight for him, so he is off to the Sharks. He might be getting on in years but I think you guys could do with him more than the Sharks could (Im glad we got him though) I cant really see the small back 3 changing anytime soon (crowd favourites when they come off) Yep, there are a few positions the Stormers should be breaking the bank for.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 62) : Yea, Look I can see that reasoning making sense but now days we just loan the players from the smaller clubs during SR, so there is no reason to have that division. You just need one year round team and then have the ability to loan players when needed and available. Then you can have sponsorship deals that run year round, increasing revenue and giving you the ability to hang on to players with year round salaries.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 16) : As far as I know, (and please correct me if I’m wrong) is that the Japanese companies get massive tax rebates if they pour money into charities etc. The teams are owned by the companies (not sponsored) and also in some way considered a charity. So they get exposure from TV viewership and also save money on the tax rebates.

  • The Stormers and Western Province can get lost. So can all who are not loyal to the Sharks!!! I’ve had enough of all this “stealing” of all our exceptional players. It’s about time those players remain faithful to those who have got them where they are.

  • South Africa and Sharks flanker Marcell Coetzee will take up a playing stint in Japan after the Rugby World Cup, signing a deal with the Honda Heat.

The hard-working openside, who scored five tries for the Sharks this term, will switch from November 1 until January 31 before going back to Super Rugby. A move to the Stormers has been mooted, but remains in the realms of speculation.

The most disappointing thing for me if he does go is that he did that interview about owing the Sharks and loyally paying the debt…and then turns around and leaves. That is unnecessary. But it is all still hypothetical at the moment and I still hope he will stay. At the end of the day he hardly played for us though. Marcell would be a bigger loss for us! Somehow I think he will stay…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 100) : @robdylan (Comment 102) : I also get seriously aggrieved when I see our WP players leave us in droves…..Thomas D U Toit and Pollard still rankle with me big time…..Jean Luc Du Plessis also hurt…..interesting that Jean Luc now back in CT playing in our Vodacom Cup Team…..the risk with taking those type of Paarl / Stellenbosch youngsters on 2 or 3 year deals is that they do come from a very specific background…..and are prone to want to come home……I have no doubt PSDT is highly principled and would not make a call to leave the sharks lightly…..Thomas Du Toit is ex Paarl Boys Head Boy and captain, those roots are difficult to forget/ forsake……unless these type players are tied down for long term , like Pollard, the risks to lose them are real…..

  • @pastorshark (Comment 62) : true but it made me a few mates Sharks supporters for life! we grew up watching Domkrag, Danie Gerber, Garth Wright, Du Plessis brothers and Adri Gendenhuys make EP hellov difficult to beat, even qualify for Super 10 – only for all of them to retire and let the u21 team be slaughtered the following year. At least the Coastal Sharks gave us some Super rugby and the Boet was always full for that game!

I am pretty sure the NZ franchises work still like this though. I would have preferred a combined team over the Kings being whipping boys (except for Sharks they should always concede the 5 points ;-) )

to be honest, just like the real world there is not much keeping talent in PE so any decent players left EP after being part of the Coastal squad to join the Sharks permanently

the much smaller distances in NZ must also help the smaller unions, not sure how their national contracting works. I am pretty sure forcing their All Blacks to play locally helps as more quality stays at the bigger unions and the smaller sides become a real option for a talented player to make his mark before Super Rugby. Competition for places does seem to be more and hence players are skillwise more rounded than ours

Also the comments I see say they pay more yen because it has less unit value. I.e 1 rand is 10 yen but instead of paying a player say 100000 yen as opposed to 10 000 rand they pay 1 million yen.
