Sharks confirm Mjekevu signing

Wandile Mjekevu has joined the Sharks on a two-year contract and will be available for Currie Cup and Super Rugby, effective July 2015.

The 24-year-old utility three-quarter is at home at both wing and outside center and joins the Sharks from French club Perpignan. Mjekevu moved to the French south west in 2013 after a frustrating period as a junior Sharks player, where a lack of opportunities to progress under then coach John Plumtree was cited as a major source of unhappiness.

Time and space can often bring new perspective, though and Mjekevu certainly appears to have matured as a player in his time away. At 1.90m and 94kg, he does not lack for size and still boasts the blistering pace that saw him emerge as a potential superstar on his Super Rugby debut for the Lions, as a raw 19 year old back in 2010.

“We are delighted that Wandile has decided to return to the Cell C Sharks” says Gary Gold. “He had a great stint in France and he is an unbelievable prospect. His strength and agility around the park will most certainly bolster our backline and we look forward to him progressing at the franchise.”

“I am thrilled to be back in Durban,” adds the player. “I’m looking forward to being a part of and contributing within the new and exciting set-up at the Cell C Sharks.”

Welcome back to Durban, Jakes. Let’s make it better the second time around.

  • Welcome Wandile. Is this the same guy who blasted the Sharks when he left for not getting proper game-time?

  • I always rated him as a good prospect – but the Sharks under Plumtree was never the place for a young talent to be developed.

  • Listening in on some conversations in a bar last night, I heard a well known Supersport employee mention that Pierre Spies is looked at for a World Cup spot at lock and that Morne Steyn is still HM first choice at flyhalf. Now that is disturbing news indeed. After questioning him on the Spies issue, I was asked the following: Pick me 4 locks for the World Cup… Even Andries Bekker’s name was mentioned.

  • So another backline player. Suppose we should be ok in that department then for the foreseeable future? Welcome back!

When we get to the point where we know what is happening with our players (the much debated two that is) and coaching staff I will feel much better. Until then I’m on the edge of my seat.

  • ok, so it’s a reference to a French anti-drinking campaign. Pictures of drunk kids doing stupid things with the slogan “Tu t’es vu quand t’as bu”, which roughly translates to “have you seen yourself when you’ve been drinking?”

So the translate the title of the video, it’s something like “Mjekevu when you’re drunk” – in other words, you wouldn’t believe this if you were sober. It’s a compliment.

  • Question is… Wing or Centre (barring no injury enforced backline shuffling) for the Sharks?

Wing seems the most likely, and perhaps Sbura will reclaim the #13 jersey. Although after seeing some of Wandile’s skills. 13 might be the best spot. Potentially lethal combo if he can get offloads like those to Sbura and Mvovo.

Pieter-Steph du Toit: Set to leave the Sharks
    .

Springbok lock Pieter-Steph du Toit will swap the Sharks for the Stormers in 2016 according to a report in South Africa.

A source told Times Live that Sharks chief executive John Smit has confirmed that the 22-year-old has decided to make the switch to the Cape Town-based franchise.

Du Toit’s departure will be another setback for the Sharks who have already announced the departure of Springbok forwards Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis as well as Willem Alberts.

The rising star has been linked with the Cape Town franchise already this year.

“Smit told us that Du Toit is leaving the franchise and there is not much he can do about it,” the source told TimesLIVE.

“He’s tried his best to keep him but it’s clear his best hasn’t been good enough.”

Du Toit was born in Cape Town and played most of his junior rugby there but was snapped up by the Sharks after finishing high school. He has said in the past he was not keen on leaving the Sharks.

“I have a debt to pay to a franchise that welcomed me with open arms when I was a nobody out of school, and then have stuck by me for two years when I was mostly injured,” Du Toit told Supersport last month.

“I need to honour that debt and I want to.”

Sharks spokesman Novashni Chetty – speaking on behalf of Smit – said negotiations between the franchise and Du Toit were still ongoing.

“Pieter-Steph has been in talks with Western Province,” Chetty told Times Live.

“No decision has been made as yet and negotiations are ongoing. We will await the outcome of those negotiations.”

Such a positive move from the days of Oupa at 13 and Adi Jacobs at wing (as awesome a centre as he was).

  • Mjekevu, 22, caught the eye as a teenager in 2010 when he scored a hat-trick playing for the Lions against the Chiefs in a Super Rugby game at Ellis Park.

He is big and strong (1.90m and 94kg) and was tipped by many as a future Springbok.

However, since that season his career went on a downward spiral and when he joined the Sharks in 2012 he struggled for game time.

“One day I’d like to play for France, but my current focus is with Perpignan. I’ve set myself new goals and want to play for Perpignan on a regular basis and see my long-term future here.

“There are negotiations to extend my contract here to two years. South Africa is not an option. I’ve met a girl here and I love the life in France,” said Mjekevu.

Plums a good coach though, just give him a team with forwards like the canes where they had 2/3 season to find their feet and their nolonger considered green and he’l show them how to excel on the big stage

not sure id have him as head of development though

im glad to have Mjekevu back, as i rate him. But do we really need him ? Are perez and wilson leaving, neither of those guys got a look in either.

I would hav preferred if we recruited a prop like brian mujati or someone like him

He will be a burden on the salary pool with little value. We need to focus on a replacement for Willie rather, and there I would have picked Arno Botha.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 93) : thats a awesome backline with willie at 15. I agree that esterhuisen has struggled, his still young though, had a decent game agnst the stormers B team, but if he and frans are our only options at inside centre we’re playing with fire, cause they both have huge flaws, frans cant focus or get into decent shape. And the young buck is taking time to adjust. I miss timmy whitehead, some ppl may have said he was too small but he could sure play effectively at inside centre.

If we got craig burden and wian herbts back id be stoked to the max, both players i rated

kanko if feel shud shape up or ship out, just isnt the player he once was, and doesnt seem to want to play blindside

bothma and tera (when he was fit) were way more mobile and effective at 8

kanko makes for a anemic 8, but he could be a great 5, come on kanko, cover 5 for us or if psdt leave play first team

I remember when kanko played 5 in the currie cup and i was so pissed cos he hardly carried the ball, of cause that was b4 he came back from japan a yard of the pace

on the subject of marcell and psdt

no way we lose marcell, psdt could happen but i hope it doesnt

this is what i think is happening in the contract negotiation

shark want to pay psdt a bit lower salary than he wants, and they want tp puy in a clause of if your injured you get half that much cause his been injured a lot the past 2 years

unless of cause the sharks have contracts ensured like football clubs do incase of injury, but then the premiums on psdt must b huge

come on psdt take a slight pay cut, we invested so much into you, and your still young

  • @robdylan (Comment 124) : Gotcha. Yes by all means buy Brussouw then. You will have 2 locks and a flanker on injury 3/4 of the season the other bit doing bok duty. But then wp have deep pockets they can afford this. As for sharks, value for money and continuity should be our motto. Is Frans going to be here for CC? I saw Heineke was talking with him but don’t know if he is up for selection or back overseas again? Hope he stays the CC he and Esterhuizen can work out niggles during cc to be ready for supers. Heimar can get time on center and wind so can Jordaan with smart rotation they and sbura can all be ready for center come SR.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 136) : nah, Louw is still u20, so has 2 years of u21 eligibility left. Ditto Inny-christian.

I kind of hope the Sharks give both of them a look-in in Currie Cup, though, because they both showed in Varsity Shield/Vodacom Cup that they’re good enough (IMO).

Inny to me simply has to be blooded now. He’s the long-term future after Lambie (now Fred has left) and will surely play Super Rugby next year. I mean, we’ve seen how guys tend to drop due to injury and it only takes for Lambie, Cronje or Pietersen to pick up an injury and Inny is well in the frame.

I do not believe we should play Pietersen ahead of Inny-Christian, unless it’s a stop gap. Cronje has come through better than expected and I’d like to see him as first choice this Currie Cup, with Inny behind him.

  • @robdylan (Comment 137) : I think the Sharks need to play both Inny and Louw in the u21s but yes they need to be included at least on the bench in a few games…as u say we know what injuries are like. For me Pieterson is and must play 15…and only 10 as last resort

Ive watched him and he is certainly a tough bugger, but do you think he has the skills and speed to make the jump? Not saying he doesnt. but havent seen sign of either so far.

  • @Den (Comment 142) : Seriously a fit PSDT is in a different league to Wentzel.Wentzel is a line out specialist and nothing more,he is also the second oldest lock in the world.
PSDT is as good a line out man,but an incredibly stronger scrummager and mauler, his pick and go is unparalleled, and he is young with incredible leadership potential.
His achilles heel are his knees, and unfortunately the way he plays they are going to be always under stress.

  • @The hound (Comment 148) : Marco, to me, eclipses PS in one vital aspect.

He wants to play for the Sharks. That, to me, makes him worth easily 3 of a guy who isn’t committed to the team.

  • @robdylan (Comment 150) : Yup. But Lewies oosthuizen can get where we need them now without the shadow of psdt. So maybe look at Paul Willemse as an additional? I wonder is he is available? I thought he would shine much more but bulls overlooked him.

  • For me the PSDT thing boils down to 2 things…yes he is a fantastic player and can greatly assist the team in achieving results. The problem is he hasnt really done any of that as he has spent the majority of the time being injured. So the hard decision needs to be made…do u keep faith and big money invested in a player that may get fit enough to make a substantial contribution…or do you resist the gamble and let him move on and rather invest that salary bill in anew youngster or a guy with a proven fitness record eventhough either may not be as excellent as PSDT if he was on the field.

  • @robdylan (Comment 150) : That’s what it boils down to.

And in my opinion, despite what he may have said about owing the Sharks a great debt, if this is not the union he wants to play for it’s best he make a move now. It may contradict previous public statements but I’ll still wish him well. He’s young enough to not always be mindful that words have consequences and thus I’ll forgive him the indiscretion. If he however stays because he wants that’s awesome too.

And he was the first oke to be jettisoned (after years of loyal service) due to the emergence of the phenomenal young Pieter-Steph du Toit.

Would he come back? If I were him, I’d have only two words for the Sharks.

  • @The hound (Comment 163) : I was a teacher at the school where PSdT’s craven week coach worked. He said he still remembers the day when they called him, telling him he must come to Malmesbury, there is a future springbok at Swartland. He had everyone excited at a very young age already. He is very good, but if he choose to leave, then Lewies just have to step up and stay injury free!

One must admire Mattfield to still be able to compete after all the rugby he put his body through, how can he still keep going on those relatively skinny legs for a big guy, when the younger guys with tree trunk can’t play 4 consecutive games.

  • One thing sharks are good at is burning bridges with young prospects. Why spend so much effort on sharks academy if we are going to squander the product? We really must stop betting our whole world on one player per position. Dup brothers leaving such a huge void is proof. Psdt is another. Is this an SA union problem or just sharks?
