Sharks coaching teams announced

Gary Gold and the Sharks have clarified the coaching appointments for the upcoming Currie Cup season. Gold himself will operate as head coach for the campaign, contrary to earlier reports.

Sean Everitt retains his position as backline coach, while there is a step up to the senior ranks for UKZN Impi head coach Ryan Strudwick. Strudwick, who has enjoyed stints as head coach for both the under 19 and under 21 teams in the past, won the Varsity Shield this year and has been operating as head of junior rugby since the start of the year.

Gold said: “For the first time since I arrived, I am satisfied that there is continuity and clarity amongst the various age-groups and this has been achieved through the redeployment of the coaching structures. The historic structure lacked the necessary focus throughout the age-groups. We had approached and considered a replacement for Brad. However, we have after consultation with all stakeholders including the team, decided within this new framework, that it will be in the best interest of the team and for continuity for me to oversee the campaign with the assistance of Sean and Ryan.”

Michael Horak has been redeployed to age-group rugby, where he will act as head coach for the under 21 side, assisted by AB Zondagh. Paul Anthony will oversee the under 19s, with another former Pretoria Boys High man, Andre Barnard, as his deputy.

  • So basically they couldn’t find a head coach so Gold has to do it?

  • Congrats Ryan! I’m pretty happy with this decision. Just hope his good work in the junior ranks is built on.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 1) : Not a buyer’s market as Rob pointed out. I’d rather they take their time and get it right. We can’t have further changes a year on again because we hired a stopgap coach.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 3) : But it would have nice to get a head coach in now who could build from the CC into Super Rugby, rather than get a new coach just before SR.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 1) : I agree with the decision. It obviously isn’t the final decision. But they must make some announcement and decision or risk more instability and loss of players. This gives them time to find a long term solution.

  • Look at the Sharks making good decisions…is it April? Finally some thinking went into these appointments. Small coaching teams, guys deployed throughout with knowledge of the senior setup. Yes it may not relate to instant success but its a start…and as they say the first step is the most important. Players come and go but structures remain.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : We don’t have to, but they made it clear they were looking for someone. I agree if this is the way they want to go then they need to continue into Super Rugby. Doing this and then bringing in someone just before SR will be pointless.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 15) : Im really hoping that they thought the idea of getting someone in wasnt a good idea and rather use the guys there. If anyone is to be brought in it should be club coaches to work with the Vodacom cup side and then CC and then Super rugby. Sean Everitt is more than capable of being a “Head Coach” in 2016. Get some pride back in the union and incentive for guys within the system to do better and not know that a new guy will always just be brought in above them

After he was part of a coaching team that finished 4th last. The article also states that Gold will act as HC next year during the SR. Are they serious?? Means another season of useless coaching and no direction on the field. If this is the case I won’t blame PSDT for moving to Newlands. At least he will be in the hands of the best of the worst in terms of coaching.

  • The shining ray of light in this announcement is Horak’s demotion to some junior team. Good riddance.

Turning to Super rugby we are again destined for a first time winner. In the last few years the Reds, Chiefs and Waratahs have lifted the trophy for the first time. Now add either the Canes or Highlanders. Just shows what other teams are achieving while “the best team never to have won it” embrace mediocrity.

  • Incredible if you think about it. For the first 15 years of the competition there were only 4 teams who lifted the trophy – Blues, Crusaders, Brumbies and Bulls. All of them have won it more than once.

It kind of made it easier to reconcile the mystifying inability of the Sharks to join the elite club.

“Oh well, it’s such a tiny club of champions I can get over it easier, it must be really tough”. “So many other teams haven’t been able to step up”. That sort of reasoning. Being “the best team never to have won it” actually carried weight back then because the winner’s club was so small.

Then since it became the Super 15 in 2011 we’ve only had new winners. Reds, Chiefs, Waratahs and most likely Hurricanes.

8 of the 15 teams have now won it. More than half. Kind of hard to justify why the Sharks haven’t managed it yet. Especially when they’ve been in 4 finals.

What are the excuses? Are we to accept that 8 teams are just better than the Sharks?

I’ve had enough of the inexplicable perennial failure.

  • @Orlok Tsubodai (Comment 76) : The problem is the HOW? He can see it just has no clue what structures and coaching are required to be able to produce such. All we do is run side to side, kick aimlessly and bash it up. Very easy to defend against cause it’s all predictable. At least the Bulls play their predictable game at 100%. It all just sucks and I for one am not prepared to watch the Sharks play SR with Gold, Venter and Everitt at the helm. Noways.

  • @robdylan (Comment 78) : Oh thank our lucky stars it wasn’t another no name brand, unproven, no success to speak of, no track record, untested, no experience at the helm, journeyman…

  • Because when Bashford was our backs coach recently they really fired and showed us their skills. So much so that I’d want to see what other magic he could have conjured up with all 15.

OMG if the Sharks were serious about getting Bashford in as head honcho – and it would have been for Super rugby next year too – then we must be really desperate for ANY coach… FFS scraping the bottom of the barrel

  • You can imagine how much effort it has taken for me to admit I would FAR rather have average journeyman Gold as head coach than Bashford. At least Gold has previously fulfilled the role of head coach – albeit with no success to speak of.

So no Bashford and Horak gone – it was a good announcement after all.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 65) : I couldn’t believe that article as well, there in lies the cause of all our problems
.Won’t commit himself to the job and sabotages anyone else’s chances at doing it,unless it’s one of his puppets.
Would bet half John Smit’s salary that Mitchell said I won’t touch that job while Venter and Gold are in the mix.
