The Springbok squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship has been named.

A large group, comprising 49 players, has been selected to take the Boks through the 5-game program ahead of this year’s World Cup in England. A match against a World XV at Newlands is the first challenge, followed by a shortened Rugby championship and an away match against Argentina.

36 healthy players have been selected, with 13 others making up a rehabilitation squad, with those in it in various stages of recovery from injury. Eight uncapped players, Scarra Ntubeni, Steven Kitshoff, Vincent Koch, Rudy Paige, Faf de Klerk, Jesse Kriel, Franco Mostert and Lionel Mapoe, have been included, while previously discarded players such as Frans Steyn and Heinrich Brüssow are also back in the mix, albeit via the rehab squad.

  • So this is the extended squad, that will be trimmed down to resemble the team that was thoroughly outplayed by Ireland and Wales

Are those the only decent locks we have.either old and over the hill (matfield), or young and injured, congrats to mostert for making it, he deserves it.

  • @JD (Comment 57) : I agree yes he didnt have a ”bad” super rugby season, infact i was reasonably impressed in a few games by both Marco at 5 and Botha at 4

however: You after a few games on the bounce you could see that these older states man, though decent guys and hard working professional are not our long term future, and okes like lewies, psdt (if he stays), Giant (from a super rugby perspective, though we should look to make him a full time shark), Askle (young but promising given time to develop), E oosthuisen (way better at 4 and at blind side) and H andrew (very young buy could be a great 5) are the future and the two older players were just stop gaps because of injuries suspensions

not that i ddnt value their contribution, and you could see tht the idea at the start of the season was to strike a balance between youth and experience, thts why psdt start wit M botha at first, marco wasnt even in the team

its sad that we either have old guys with good attitudes or the best hooker in the world whose a constint red card threat

    hopefully thats all changing

The RWC is not going to be won playing free flowing running rugby…sorry to disappoint. We need a forward pack to get us over the advantage line, inside backs to create space and wingers that are able to finish with not much room.

Even the Irish have got over Brian o Driscoll.
Habbanna,deVilliers, Mattfield, Pienaar,Fourie, Fourie du Preez, Burger, are all way past it.
Bismark,Jannie,J.PP and Frans still have a claim, because we have not developed anyone better in those positions.

Heyneke should forget the geriatrics, they could not do it in 2011. How on earth they going to do it now 4 years later, after retiring, taking off a few years in Japan , catastrophic injuries etc? Crazy man…

  • @The hound (Comment 93) : I can understand why HM has gone with those guys. They are classy players but even more so they have shown composure under pressure. I think he was concerned that discarding all and picking youth would result in him having a team that if ontop would win easy but in a tight game may crumble. And the Boks have always had that 1 bad game every RWC…i think he hopes the experience will get him through that game. Will the Boks win it…hmm i have my doubts based on the form of guys and our game plan.

In a tightly contested semi or final in the pissing rain…who would u want to watch on tv kicking for poles from 40m out?

  • Morne is not a bad call, but on the bench.,but I don’t think he will go it will be Pollard,Lambie and Jantjies.
Now if Meyer had a little foresight and had picked Rory Kockert,we would have had another kicking option and Morne’s name wouldn’t have even been there. But we are incredibly poor in the kicking department, with absolutely no options but the flyhalves
.Not one kicking fullback, scrum half or wing.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 103) : I didnt say Lambie was a bad option, just that a lot of people say his goal kicking is his weakness. And to be fair that day at Ellis Park (and i was behind the poles watching the kick) it was sunny and pretty windless and at altitude so not exactly the hardest guy even under pressure.

I am saying that we have to pick a flyhalf that can kick first and foremost, unlike in other years when you could pick Butch because Percy could kick,or Lem because Jubba could kick.
Kockett is a very accurate kicker, that takes major pressure off the flyhalf.

  • Is it just me or am I daft? I don’t get it? Everybody is going off about the franchises being at fault for the Bok injury crisis for not resting players according to agreements…but if I go through the list of injured players above, almost no one qualifies for that criticism! Duane was rested repeatedly and so was everyone else on that listed. Pat was rested one game late, if I am not mistaken…but then got injured in a way (neck injury in the tackle) that had nothing to do with rest or not. Most of these guys got injured so early on in the season and were injured so long/much that they hardly even played 5 games all season. The criticism of the franchises seems to me to be just a bit unreasonable…or am I missing something?
