Benedict Chanakira caught up with Sharks flanker Renaldo Bothma for a quick chat ahead of his departure to join the Namibian World cup squad.

BC- How was your first season of Super Rugby?

It was a dream come true especially being blessed to have played all the games except the Highlanders due to a concussion! I have learned a lot this season and can’t wait for next year, having to take a bit more experience into next season will help a lot!

BC- How is the Rugby World Cup preparations looking?

We are all getting together this weekend, everyone is flying in for the start of our camp! We also have two tests in July and two in August! The local players have been working hard the last couple of months so will be good that the whole squad will be training together from next week!

BC- Danie Vermeulen recently stepped down as the Namibia coach. Is it an aspect that could unsettle the squad?

Danie is a great person and coach, he gave me the opportunity to play for Namibia! I will always be thankful for that. He made the decision to step down and these things happen! We as players will just have to adapt to it and focus on the job at hand! I think Phil Davies and Pieter Rossouw will do a good job in preparing us these next 2 months! I am excited about everything!

BC- What has been the biggest challenge you have faced this season?

I think losing six games in a row and dealing with all the criticism we got. Luckily, we believed in each other and managed to win our last three games of the season.

BC- What are your thoughts on your World Cup opponents, especially defending champions New Zealand?

One thing I know is that we are up for a physical four games and it will be tough! But that is my type of game so I’m looking forward to going up against the best in the world. The All Blacks will definitely be the highlight of the World Cup and probably my career. I will just be giving my 100% on the day!

BC- Where will Renaldo be playing his rugby next season?

I have just signed with Japanese club Toyota Verblitz for a short stint after the World Cup. I will return to sunny and warm Durban for Super Rugby!

BC- What is your biggest rugby related fear?

It has to be not being able to play a game. There is nothing worse than sitting next to the rugby field and watching your friends give their all.

BC- What was your highlight of the Super Rugby season?

To be honest it all happened so fast, I think winning against the Chiefs in Durban was great and also scoring my first Super Rugby try against the Lions!

BC- Who is the most annoying player in the Sharks squad?

We are a bunch of close friends so there in no one that really annoys me!!

  • Thanks Benedict! Renaldo come across as such a real down to earth guy. Always giving 120%, every time. Much like Marcell Coetzee. Plays with such passion and energy. Fantastic watching him play and very glad we have him back next year again.
