Another new face

Yet another new prop was spotted training with the Sharks Currie Cup group yesterday, although it’s not clear whether he’ll still be in the mix come final squad selection time.

Like Juan Schoeman, Gerhardus Engelbrecht is a former Affies boy who came through the Bulls system, playing under 21 rugby in Pretoria for 2 years, as well as representing Tuks in the Varsity Cup competition in 2012 and 2013. He played for the Valke last year in the Currie Cup first division and seems to have moved to Durban to play for Rovers, from where he’s been included in the Sharks group.

Engelbrecht is 24 years old and a rather large unit indeed – tall for a tighthead prop at around 1.90m. Based on this image, he appears to be very solidly built too – perhaps weighing even more than the 118kg listed in his SA Rugby profile.

We’ll share more details on Engelbrecht once we know whether he’s likely to feature permanently for the Sharks.

  • Rob,giving my age away now. My friend,Jimmy Abbott (yes, him)played for Roodepoort & Transvaal B as a prop & a lock. Jimmy is 6’5″ & weighed close to 150kg at the time,so who says props can’t be tall – it’s the hookers who are supposedly short. Jimmy weighed 280kgs 2 years ago & today weighs 140kgs!! :???:

  • @markm (Comment 2) : where’s the other half of him?

No look, you are right. Carl Hayman is probably the archetypal 1.9m modern tighthead and he does just fine. It’s just that it probably does count as at the top end of the normal height range for a tighthead.

  • @markm (Comment 2) : Jimmy Abbot used to take up 2-3 prime Ellis Park seats when he went to watch games.
Where is he now, last I read he was a pastor in Warterval Boven or one of those other small towns in the area. I think he was sickly.

  • When I played club rugby for Sabie one of our props, who was ten years older than everyone we played against and 1.94m tall (same as us locks), scrummed the crap out of every opponent he came up against, even the seriously solid ones from Nelspruit.

His nickname was Hekkie (don’t ask – I never knew his real name).

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 7) : When was that? Played a number of years for White River 1996 – 2001. Had the awesome experience of playing against Vleis Visage, and later became good friends with him.

Also played for Ermelo years ago, when Jimmy Storehouse played hooker for them.Good memories.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 10) : Lol…are you still asking…it’s obvious Coolfusion. He wants to win SR soon and he knows which positions need beefing up. We should have tried to get Brian Mujati. These new faces couldn’t make it at the Bulls and we hope they will make it here.

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 13) :   Are you Rhineshark then, was wondering what happened to you. I know I had asked that same question to someone earlier and deep down thought it was you (in the quise of Rhineshark) but couldnt be sure. Why the name name change, have you left Germany? If so I hope its for a country where you can at least eat avo’s everyday.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 16) : I agree that we do appear to be raiding the back shelf of the Bulls’ larder; however, they’ve proved time and again over the last few years that they are incapable of identifying the good prop talent within their own ranks (hence their obsession with Kruger and Greyling) so it’s at least conceivable that we may have picked up a couple of good’uns from under their very noses.

I still find it laughable that they missed Lewies….

  • There more players we bring in the higher the chances we find at least one gem. Sure it’s not always the cheapest way of doing things, but I think the one thing the Sharks have going for them right now is funds.
