Boks Brisbane bound

22 of the match 23 that played for the Boks aginst the World XV at Newlands on Saturday will make the trip to Brisbane for a shorter-than-usual Rugby Championship tour. In this World Cup year, only a single round will be played; the away fixture against the Wallabies thus marking the only time Heyneke Meyer’s men will need to travel.

In a perhaps unexpected blow, Jean de Villiers is the man to miss out on the trip, with the brains trust deciding that game time for Western Province during their Currie Cup warm-up program will be more beneficial to him than a test match against the Wallabies.

In addition to the 22 players from Saturday’s squad, nine others – Lionel Mapoe, Lwazi Mvovo, Rudy Paige, Jan Serfontein, Morné Steyn, Schalk Brits, Lood de Jager, Frans Malherbe and Heinke van der Merwe – will make the trip to the Australian East Coast.

The remainder of the 49-strong Bok group will continue with rehab and conditioning work in Pretoria.

Squad for Brisbane:

Forwards: Schalk Brits, Schalk Burger, Marcell Coetzee, Lood de Jager, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Vincent Koch, Francois Louw, Frans Malherbe, Victor Matfield, Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje, Tendai Mtawarira, Trevor Nyakane, Adriaan Strauss, Heinke van der Merwe, Warren Whiteley.

Backs: Damian De Allende, Bryan Habana, Jesse Kriel, Patrick Lambie, Willie le Roux, Lionel Mapoe, Lwazi Mvovo, Rudy Paige, Ruan Pienaar, JP Pietersen, Handré Pollard, Cobus Reinach, Jan Serfontein, Morné Steyn.

  • As far as i know JDV was never going to go to OZ, the plan was always to g back and play CC warm up games for WP. So basically everyone that if fit gets to tour…interested to see the bench combo for this game.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : the boy in me is hoping that Mapoe gets a bench call up and Whitley starts again ..

The logical me that have witnessed the Blue Bulls coach in all his glory thinks Burger will start @ 8 with Whitley on the bench . And DDA and Serforntein to start with Jesse Kriel on the bench as center cover . No Mapoe … sigh

  • @Zibbie (Comment 5) : If he doesnt start with the same team then that is just retarded. Mapoe for JDV should be only bench spot change unless its Serfontein and not Mapoe. Multiple changes this weekend will only result in a disjointed performance and then there would have been no benefit from the World XV game.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 6) : you think they will continue with Jesse Kriel at 13 ? that would be interesting . Personally i would rather go with serfontein since he is a genuine center and has experience . if experience is not taken into consideration ill go with Mapoe

  • @SheldonK (Comment 6) : Only benefit of the WorldXV game was to put money in SARU’s pockets, anyone reading anything into that game is seriously deluded.
The AB’s gave themselves a serious hit out against Samoa,we should have done the same thing against Namibia.
Before the posse arrives,Namibia is a world cup team ,this World XV team was about as motivated as Julius Malema at a Bapsfontein Boere musik festival.
They came for the cheque. We seriously learnt nothing.
That is evident in Meyer’s choice of Schalk Britz in his squad at the expense of the one world XV player who came to play Craig Burden

  • @Zibbie (Comment 7) : I think it would be very short sighted not to continue with Kriel- he did pretty well. Serfontein and Mapoe are coming back from injuries so should only play from the bench. I think if they both equally fit he will go with Serfontein over Mapoe. @The hound (Comment 8) : Agree with you bout the money and motivation of world XV team. It at least gave HM a chance to fiddle a bit with combinations in a match environment. But yeh other than that it was just a formal contact session

SOOO true! I think, in my humble opinion, that the only change should have been Lambie to start at 10 (STOP MESSING WITH HIM HM – HE IS A FLYHALF NOT A FULL BACK!) AND Handré Pollard on the bench!
Lambie had a good run at fullback this past Sat but he has made it quite clear in the past that he wants to concentrate on flyhalf.
I think Pollard seems to be lacking confidence at the moment, but I’m sure he will come right.

  • Morne Steyn shouldn’t play, full stop. Rotate between Lambie and Pollard, keep Steyn as backup behind jantjies in case we have 2 or 3 injured flyhalves. HM doesn’t need to try Steyn out now, we all know what Steyn has to offer (sigh).

JPP and Jannie should be given a rest (hopefully forever). We have more than capable backups.

Jessie did ok on Saturday. I wouldn’t mind if HM kept him and De Allende during the rugby championship. Although I would like Mapoe to get a chance as well

  • @Ben (Comment 23) : @Dancing Bear (Comment 25) : Kriel did look good in this game….however we need to put his performance into context – playing against some Frenchman, and JJ Engelbrecht – hardly the sternest of tests.

Against NZ we’ll get to see what the young man is made of – I hope he makes the position his, as we are really struggling to find form 13′s in this country, and I’m tired of seeing everything with a double digit on his back being converted to a stop-gap 13.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 28) : Agree I mean even old bionic de Villiers looked O.K. against that lot.
Kriel did however bring something different to Meyer game plan.
Lambie at 15 was a revelation,I think maybe because he came on for the first time with absolutely no pressure on him.He looked like he enjoyed himself, while Pollard was the one rigid with the fear of failure.

  • I heard HM was not happy with Pollard’s performance, but if Lambie will replace him is an open question. He did look energized when he came on Saturday and should be starting at flyhalf. We have enough fullback options.

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 30) : You are quite right because I don’t think even Meyer is stupid enough to try and sneak both Spies and Morne ‘ back into the team. The fans might buy Morne’s boot, but hell even the Bulls don’t want Spies back.
Meyer needs both Lambie and Pollard firing on all cylinders from now through the Championship and into the last week of the World Cup to have a snowball’s chance.
He also needs to start running Whitely at 8 because Vermullen is a long way off and Alberts won’t make 50% of those games.Scalk is very enthusiastic but his bones are old and he hasn’t played 4 games in a row for a long time.
I personally like Whitely,Marcel and Alberts, but Meyer is going to go with Louw,Burger, and Marcel.

  • @The hound (Comment 29) : Lambie sure looked good….I think the Ellis Park penalty last year broke him into the team culture and he seems to be building on that.

By slotting his conversions in a rainy Cape Town, he also made a very good case for him as the starting fh for the world cup.

  • @Leeubok (Comment 27) : good points, its a interesting situation we’re in with many players in different positions and spots on the bench

back in the day we were all begging jake white to see the light and give jdv and JF a chance as a centre pairing, when he was dead set on taking barry and joubert all the way to the final and barely grooming the back ups (back then we played ppl into the ground). Is history repeating it self, are damian and jesse the new jdv and jf, and HM is desperete to play a out of shape jf and a over the hill jdv

JC is a good signing for stormers since kithoff is off to france

they will likely sign H Brossouw since kolisi carr and the other flank the have are really good and super athletic but not yet as adapt at dominating the break down
