One for me, one for you at City Park

The Sharks under 21 side recorded a stunning 17-13 away win over their Western Province counterparts at City Park in Cape Town on Saturday, with a last-gasp try by the hosts consigning the under 19 side to defeat by the same margin.

In cold and rain the likes of which Paul Anthony’s side will not have seen much during training, the under 19s scrapped bravely and had the upper hand over their more fancied hosts for much of the 70 minutes. With no score at all in the first half, it was Western Province’s Aidynn Cupido who finally broke the deadlock with a penalty. Sharks man Tristan Tedder equalised and then added a second with ten minutes to play, handing his side a slender 6-3 lead. Holding on grimly, it unfortunately wasn’t to be for the Sharks, as Province’s replacement hooker Ruan Brits crashed over for a try in the dying seconds.

Cupido’s conversion handed his side a 10-6 win; given the difference in pedigree between the sides (on paper at least) one has to say that this was far from a disastrous result for Anthony and his team and they’ll take plenty of confidence from this performance ahead of this weekend’s tough game at Loftus.

Chris de Beer’s under 21 side found the going more to their liking – in similar conditions – with scrumhalf Rowan Gouws scoring the only points of the first half with a penalty in the third minute. Junior Bok flyhalf Ernst Stabelberg equalised for Province shortly after half time, before a try to Sharks pivot Riaan O’Neill, followed by a second Gouws penalty, opened up some daylight.

Gouws extended the score twice more, always keeping the visitors’ noses in front and with a 17-6 lead built up heading into the final minutes, Province replacement Christo van der Merwe’s try wasn’t to be enough to bring his side within sight of the lead. A big away win over tough opposition will have Michael Horak smiling ahead of a daunting trip to Pretoria to face the champion Blue Bulls.

Well done to both of the sides and we look forward to the rest of the season.

  • A point away to WP will def do for the u19s. Great result by the u21s- whats the likelyhood of this side remaining largely intact for the season (injuries aside)? Yes besides Thomas DuToit.

Man how strong mentally and grounded must you be to maintain and improve on your potential when people are willing to pay that amount for you as an 18 year old. I doubt I would have been able to handle it.

  • The Sharks need a backup fetcher of note and another very tall lock, these are areas we struggle in specially now having lost PSDT.

I still struggle to fathom why Tyler Fisher is not given more chances???? I know I have heard about attitude, but those things could and should be ironed out.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 19) : Moved over to Monumentpark in Kraaifontein, but will always support Gim, especially against the Donkies. Last year in the Derby, Adriaan made his comeback after a year (touch rugby injury on that left knee) from the bech. One of the coaches told the Donkies he would buy the player who gets him of the field a “kis bier”. Think it was their captain who gave a ridiculous tackle, and got a yellow card for his effort. We were all really ticked off!
