Burger Captain, but will we see a surprise selection?

News came in yesterday afternoon that Heyneke Meyer has selected Schalk Burger to captain the side against the All Blacks this weekend. That was pretty much an expected announcement, but the team to be announced later today might shock a few.

According to various reports floating around this morning, Marcell Coetzee will not be in the side to face the All Blacks. It his replacement though, that will make you sit up. No, it is not Warren Whiteley. It might very well be Heinrich Brussow. Yes you read that right, reports seem to indicate that the Cheetahs hard man will play on the side of the scrum in place of Coetzee, while Schalk captains from the back of the scrum.

If that was not enough to get a raging debate going, Meyer could very well hand out a new cap this week. Vincent Koch looks to be in line to start his first Springbok match, replacing Jannie du Plessis in the front row. Whether Jannie is still reeling following a head knock last weekend, or whether this is another pre-planned rotation, we will have to wait and see what is said once the team is officially announced.

The team is set to be announced later today.

    Mike Greenaway?

Hmmm – That makes me wonder..

Schalk will have to be in the side obviously, but nothing rules out having him on the flank with Whiteley at the back, especially to help with the lineouts.

  • Personally I would prefer to have Whiteley start at 8….as well as Jannie at 3.
Rather give Koch and Brussow a half hour and then start them against the Argies if Meyer wants to see what they can do.
I am the biggest Brussow fan of them all….but its a huge ask as he has not had a lot of rugby. Anyway…lets see. Pollard must know he needs a huge game….perhaps Lambie will be given a start in Durban.

  • @Dunx (Comment 4) : Thats interesting…i thought Whitely had lost his chance after his display vs World XV. Perhaps the Coetzee injury, Brussouws possibly still injured along with Alberts and Vermuelen means Whitely gets another shot. Curious as to HM’s plans for Mahoje tho?

  • I have a personal problem with people here referring to Meyer as HM,I know he fancies himself as His Majesty but do we have to perpetuate the myth.
On another note only two more serious hit outs to the World cup,and we have a brand new captain, and another reshuffled 6,7,8.
Once more Meyer’s insecurities surface as he desperately claws back another injury prone old has been,I bet he put in a call to Jean Smith first.
As soon as Vermullen was unavailable two games ago he should have picked Whitely,by now Warren would have been in a position to take over the captaincy.
Burger won’t survive till the World Cup,and at best will play injured.
So we put our World Cup hopes in the hands of Mattfield?deVilliers?,Burger?and then what Ruan Pienaar,Fourie du Preez?Bismark or Adriaan Straus.

just have no faith in him holding up to the end of the World Cup.
As an off the bench option,he gets my vote, but to now pick him as captain two games away from the Cup sheeeet thats a long stretch.
We are basing all our hopes on four seriously dodgey players.
But hey then this is a coach who gave Spies 50 caps, persevered with Sideshow Bob at fullback ,and actually gave Bok caps to Greyling and that other fat prop.

As a youngster I grew up disliking Naas with a passion. In those days Natal played in the B division of the Currie Cup but had friendlies against some of the top teams. I went to one of these games against the Bulls and a section of the crowd started booing Naas and too my surprise it irked the hell out of me and even embarrassed me that I was being associated with these guys. BTW we won that game quite well.
