These are the first in a list of changes made to the team that beat Argentina last weekend. Dane Coles and Liam Messam gets starts amongst the forwards, while the Smith clan is all back in the mix. Aaron Smith, Conrad Smith, Ben Smith and Ma’a Smith Nonu all make returns to the starting line-up.

Beauden Barrett, the player that impresses the most during the Super Rugby campaign, is set to come off the bench to make his impact, along with TJ Perenara.

  • That is a pretty good side right there. To lose SBW only to have Conrad Smith to replace him, going to be very interesting to see how our centers hold up.

  • That All Black bench could well prove to be the difference. Sopoaga on debut at Ellis Park…talk about throwing a guy in the deep end

Yeah look, I don’t understand the thinking there. Are they doing that to test his BMT to potentially start at the World Cup? I would have understood if they started him against Argentina, but against us in SA? Strange…

  • Anyone have an idea why Hansen seldom starts Barrett, he’s been around for enough seasons to be next in line but Sopoaga is fast tracked. I’m just interested in what we’re missing.

  • Wonder how the Boks will approach this game. Everyone is in preparation mode for the WC. Will the guys go at it hard…I’m not sure anyone in either camp wants to risk injury? I think guys like Brussow and the other “fringe” guys however will play their hearts out aswell as the new faces in the AB squad.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : Maybe Sopoaga already knows how to play ABs RWC game plan I.e. Sopoaga, Highlanders style vs Barrett, Canes

    Yeah, who knows..

One thing I know is that Barrett would have been starting flyhalf if he was playing for any other country..

  • Oh boy….look no further than Aaron Smith…you can have Catrakilis playing next to him and you’ll still have the best half back combo.

If Faf played in NZ, he’d be right behind Smith on the bench….in SA though, he doesn’t kick enough posession away, causes HM’s strategy a critical meltdown.

  • @Surprise Attack (Comment 8) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 12) :

I think Aron Cruden is completely out of the RWC so they are just looking at giving their fringe players a run. If you are going to give a guy a debut, you might as well do it with the strongest most experienced players around him. He’ll be well protected by Smith and Nonu. He’ll do well. He’s been the form NZ flyhalf this season and deserves a run.

Barret I think is their first choice. Remember the last WC NZ had a horrible run with injuries in this channel and they just want to make sure they have a number of players that’s ready if needed. Barret will probably be the starting 10 at the World Cup. Sopoanga may be theird choice behind Carter, while they still also have Colin Slade (who also played excellent rugby for the Crusaders before Carter came back.

Man, these guys are spoiled for choice. They could basically pick any one of their Super Rugby starting 10′s and still have a better 10 than any other country. It’s only the Blues (and the only struggling NZ team) that is still looking for an international quality 10.

  • @Letgo (Comment 16) : for me Sopoanga is the best flyhalf in NZ and I would play him ahead of Carter.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : I just think its a case of the All Blacks not messing around. He had a good super 15 so they saying to him ok u were good domestically lets see if u can crack it at top level. No use investing in a guy thats only good domestically. Trial him and then quick assessment ya or nay.

  • The Boks will have to be really switched on with the Smith / Sopoaga combo at 9 and 10, and the probably Barrett coming on later. Expect a lot of clever grubbers and short kicks over the defensive line.
