The Sharks have confirmed that Mouritz Botha and Conrad Hoffmann have been granted releases and will not feature in the upcoming Currie Cup campaign.

Sharks PR manager, Novashni Chetty, earlier told us that Botha has been granted an early release from his contract to take up an exciting three year opportunity at Newcastle as a player/coach, adding that “we thank Mouritz for his contribution during his time with us and wish him the very best for this new opportunity he is pursuing.”

Chetty also revealed that Hoffmann “has joined Leinster on a three-month contract, as a World Cup joker. This is an exciting opportunity for Conrad to get further experience in a new environment.”

We wish both players all the best.

  • I’m sure everyone was expecting me to respond sooner, but I’ve just gotten off the plane from Ireland; I just had to shake the Leinster “talent” scout’s hand.

Actually, truth be told though, I’m feeling kind of empty, like a dog that has finally caught the car he’s been chasing. I mean, with Hoffman gone, what am I going to post about? I’m sure my bitching about him must have earned me at least two stars on the site.

  • Cape Town – While all eyes have been on the recovery of Springbok captain Jean de Villiers in Cape Town, Springbok lock Pieter-Steph du Toit has quietly been going about his rehabilitation with the Sharks in Durban.

The 22-year-old was released from coach Heyneke Meyer’s squad at the beginning of the month before the match against the World XV in Cape Town, and it appeared then that his Rugby World Cup dreams might be over.

But now, less than a month later, Du Toit has recovered from his knee injury and Sharks coach Gary Gold confirmed on Monday that he would play in Friday’s pre-Currie Cup friendly against the Golden Lions in Pietermaritzburg.

Despite being injured, Du Toit has been firmly in the headlines this month when the Sharks confirmed that they will lose the player in October, and it’s rugby’s worst kept secret that the second-rower is heading to the Stormers for Super Rugby in 2016.

But now the focus will move back onto the field, and how Du Toit goes on Friday night will have a major say in whether or not he is included in the Bok set-up for next weekend’s Rugby Championship Test against Argentina in Durban.

“Pieter-Steph is playing this weekend. I have absolutely no idea how many games he is going to play. I don’t know what SARU’s plan is, but our plan is that he’s contracted to us at the moment and we’re going to play him this weekend,” Sharks coach Gary Gold told media in Durban on Monday.

“I’m really excited to have him back and I’m going to play him as long as he’s with us. He’ll play until he gets called up to the SA team and anyone who gets left out the SA team will come back to us.”

There was no word, meanwhile, on the physical state of Francois Steyn as he continues his recovery from a pectoral muscle tear.

And I hope Conrad finds what’s missing in his game, these guys play this sport because they love it and it’s a huge part of their life so I hope they find some success in it.

  • So i see nobody has closed the door that keeps the locks in Durban…another 2 gone this year. Good thing we have an endless supply of good locks…oh wait! Hoffman was kinda surplus to requirements- he has talent- just cant seem to find how to release it. And i see PSDT is playing in the friendly on Friday- all that benefits is SARU to the detriment of the Sharks. Although do we even have 2 fit locks?

  • All the best with the two players leaving and thanks for your service to the Sharks.

Now regarding, Peter-Steph playing for the Sharks on Friday in the warm-up, I just dont understand the benefit here to the Sharks, knowing that he has decided to leave, unless there has been an instruction from SARU. but otherwise angazi?

I know Bader wasn’t technically contracted to the Sharks but based on past results we should try and hang on to Michaelhouse pivots.

  • Emotions aside I think playing a player who has no desire to be here is a recipe for disaster. Our only hope is that he wants to get a bok spot bad enough to actually give a shit about playing for us.

I would not happy if I was the guy benched for someone who has already ‘left’ the club.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 49) : Unless you are specifically worried about our age group rugby, in terms of senior fly-halves with Inny and Lambie our FH ranks are young and talented, no point in bring in a top talent in a position where he will sit behind the better seniors for the next few years.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 50) : These are modern times, players move on and get injured very quickly. There are no guarantees that those 2 will still be around and uninjured in 2-4 years time.
As far as I’m concerned you can hardly have enough great pivots in a squad.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 51) : I agree, but he could have also wanted somewhere where he feels he can get senior rugby the quickest. Personally while I would love you have the 15 best U19′s every year, in a realistic world I am happy with us spending the money in the positions where we need depth currently, which in my opinion is fullback and lock. But also remember Curwin is a clever signing because if as you say we suddenly have problems at FH then we have him, and if we don’t have problems then we can build a great new fullback.

  • Surely you want to get most of the best players available to you in all positions. Its crazy breaking the bank to sign one superstar (who then professes that he wants to actually play for the Stormers) while neglecting all other positions because there is no money left to buy other good players.
