The Springbok medical team has assessed the injuries to players during the loss to New Zealand last week with news coming through that two of the four injured would miss the upcoming test against Argentina.

Jannie du Plessis and Francois Louw are set to miss the match in Durban. Jannie is struggling with his knee while Louw has a rotator cuff injury. The good news is that both Vincent Koch and Warren Whiteley are expected to be fit to face Argentina in little over a week’s time.

Looking at the longer term injury concerns, there are a few players that may well be available to play in the Durban test. Jean de Villiers is expected to make his return to international rugby after getting through two games for the Western Province side.

Further to this, Fourie Du Preez and Willem Alberts also looks set to be available for the first time this year. All players with injuries will be assessed on Monday where a call will be made on their availability for the match.

Other currently on the crock-list: Marcell Coetzee, Jan Serfontein, Piet-Steph du Toit and Steven Kitshoff will all go through the motions on Monday to assess their readiness for international duty, with the hope that they will be available for the Durban test match. Worst case scenario for these players would be to only play in the second Argentina test, which takes place in Argentina.

Others currently injured but not in the running for next week include Victor Matfield, JP Pietersen, Duane Vermeulen, Coenie Oosthuizen, Frans Malherbe and Frans Steyn. It was confirmed that both Matfield and Pietersen are confirmed to not be available for either of the two test matches against Argentina, while it is hoped that Frans Steyn will make it back in time to play the second match in Argentina.

  • I read in the news somewhere Morne Steyn might get a shot at flyhalf this weekend.. Makes you wonder what the hell Lambie has to do to prove himself? Playing him at flyhalf, in Durbs would’ve been ideal! But noooo

  • Why do they persist with Lambie at fullback?? He’s a brilliant flyhalf and that’s the only position he plays in for the sharks. I really don’t understand the bok coaches thinking..

I’d rather have Zane at fullback than Pat Lambie.

Give Zane a go and see how he has progressed since moving to Europe. Playing Lambie there will not tell you anything – he hasn’t had much time on the field in the last few months, nevermind playing as the last line of defence.

  • I would keep the team as close as possible to last week, except to play Lambie at 10, Mvovo in place of Hendricks(who does almost nothing and can’t tackle for sh*t). Then bring the older players on from the 55 minute on wards, as that is the point where the Boks, especially the backline, needs the more experienced players on the field to seal the game.

  • Surely in these 2 test matches lambie and Steyn should be the 10 options with Pollard having had 2 games. Same goes for Reinach and Faf DeKlerk. Im a fan of Alberts but i dont think he warrants a Bok spot at the moment. Id def keep the centre pairing in tact and play Mapoe on the wing and JDV on the bench. Front row combo could be interesting…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 11) : He is bringing steyn in cold while lambie has to shift another seat back. Someone please repeat the stupid old argument “de coach know what lambie have to offer” in my best Naas botha impersonation. Because that’s all they can ever say. Does he not know what steyn has to offer. I sure do. And after not playing lambie for a year and giving him about 20 minutes none of it on flyhalf he still knows what lie has to offer? Isn’t it evident by now he wants his squad to be exactly the same as as the one we had for the past 2 years.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 19) : Pat Lambie played most of his school rugby at 15,the Cronje twins were the school 9 and 10.
He is a better 15 than anyone in the country with the exception of Wille le Roux.
Meyer knows this and has Pat on the bench as cover for 10 and 15.
Personally I would like to see Pat at 10,but can you see Meyer’s dilemma then who does he put on the bench to cover 10 and 15,Pollard can’t cover 15.
He has persisted with Ruan Pienaar for the same reason, can cover 9,10 and at a crisis push 15.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 19) : I think another analogy as to is Pat a 10 or a 15,is was Jaques Kallis a batsman who could bowl ,or was he a bowler who could bat.
Most people who don’t know him would say the former, but most of the guys who grew up with him would say the later. At the end of the day it didn’t matter he could do both better than anyone else.
    Same thing with Pat.

I hear you, and you raise valid points.

I just don’t think Lambie should be playing international rugby at fullback if he isn’t playing it at Super Rugby / Provincial level. Somewhere a call needs to be made and a position chosen.

You don’t see the All Blacks suddenly make Barrett or Sopoaga a fullback so that they can also accommodate Dan Carter?

Its brilliant that he can cover 15 off the bench, but that will make him the primary bench option and not a first choice starter.

  • People those thinking Pollard will be benched for Lambie is dreaming, Pollard was brought to the Bulls by HM, he will be given every chance to make 10 his own by HM no matter how poorly he performed.

Last year Lambie proved to be the better 10 on the end of year tour as well as against the AB’s, HM even went on record in saying how Lambie had a better kicking game as well as a superior game management, This year the Springbok season started and where is Lambie? HM to look after his little love child Pollard is saying Lambie is a 15? WTF!!! So here is a little truth, Lambie will never be affored the same opportunity as Pollard was and is.

So no use even questioning it, same as a few other positions and players, Matfield will return and where will Lood de Jager go? yet Lood is far superior a player right now, Louw vs Kriel of the Lions?????? the list goes on and on.

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 22) : I agree 100% with you Rich, why must Lambie be the proverbial lamb the slaughter? Excuse the pun. Why must Lambie be the scape goat? Lambie is a 10 and should be playing there end of story.

The end of year tour was a disaster- Boks played terribly (Are we seriously giving Lambie that credit). Like i said i think Lambie is a good player but so is Pollard and his physical attributes are better. Lets not forget lambie has played very little rugby this year so if i was a coach id also start Pollard. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but Pollard will get better- Lambie’s game is pretty much as good as it will get. Which is why i say he should play 15. Id rather have him on the field.

In light of the fact that HM loves Pollard at 10, I reckon it could be a good solution to play Lambie at 15 and put Willie on the wing… Lambie’s defence is way better than Willie’s, and this way we could still have Willie’s flair in the team

  • @SheldonK (Comment 42) : Of course Pollard also can’t tackle, leaks tries and misses way too many kicks…he also can’t tactically manage a game very well at this stage. And those are aspects which Lambie had buttoned down beautifully in the last 6 months before his injury…

anyone who knows anything about rugby, HM knows Lambie is our best option at 10… He is practising with Lambie day in and day out at 10… But his plan is to keep him hidden until the quarters of the RWC… When he’ll spring a surprise on the Aussies and unveil Lambie as our secret weapon at 10… The Kiwis will be equally surprised in the semis… And so to the English in the final…

As we hold aloft the Webb Ellis trophy the Aussies, kiwis and English will bemoan the fact that HM had them all fooled

  • @willemv10 (Comment 55) : Those Sharks blinkers getting in ur eye i think. Dont forget which flyhalf took the ball to the line and put Kriel away for his try. Yes Pollard makes mistakes- but he is very young and will get better. Lambie is physically and mentally as good as he is going to get- which yes still makes him a very good player (i never said he wasnt). I did say that he has been out seriously injured for last few months. So if you were Bok would you seriously play a guy thats been in a neck brace for months? He is working Lambie back into the team. Pollard does a hell of a lot right lets not forget that.

Hasnt played in months. Now guys want him as the stating Bok 10. I know we extreme Sharks supporters here but lets be realistic. Ive said all along that id play both Pollard and lambie in the same team. Some guys only want specialists playing certain positions and blah blah

So will he gel better with Lambie who likes to control the game or Pollard that likes to run onto the ball? Im not saying it definitely will happen but there is a big possibility of DuPreez and Lambie frustrating each other. Mucht he same way Lambie played better with McCloed who just gave him the ball than Reinach who liked to run it

If Lambie was used at 10 for the last, at least 30 minutes, of the last 2 matches, I believe we would have won both those games.

I agree, Pollard should have started. Lambie had a serious injury and should not eb rushed back, but he now needs time at 10. Defend the decision to give him 13 minutes on defense against AUS and 17 at 15 against NZ.

Why use him as fullback cover when we can use Willie, Kriel, Mvovo and even F Steyn?

We need 2 qaulity 10′s. Do we want the second 10 to be Morne?

  • @Letgo (Comment 84) : I disagree that we would have won both games as i dont believe the flyhalf was the issue. Personally id prefer Lambie to be eased back in slowly as another injury of that nature equals end of career and then what? I still stick by the fact that id prefer to see Pollard,Lambie,Leroux, De Allende, Kriel, Serfontein all in the same starting side…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 81) :

Also, while you are so fervently defending Pollard (on a Sharks site btw), why don’t you admit to his obvious deficiencies, that probably cost as the last 2 matches. Yes, he does very good things. I agree he is talented. I agree he will get better, but there are still things in his game that is not up to standard – not to mention that Pollard and Lambie could actually compliment each others games, if they are used properly in tandem.

I don’t know that Pollard will ever be able to close out a game and stay the attacking minded player that he is now. He will probably lose his attack as coaches work on the rest of his game.

It’s is not for nothing that we here on Sharksworld sing the praises of Pat Lambie, he has is a very rounded player. Compare him to any other SA flyhalf and you will see he makes more breaks, puts more defenders in gaps, yet he is also seen as one of the best defensive flyhalfs. Not to mention his tactical decisions making, game management skills.

Lambie, at his best, is by far the superior player of the two and I believe even if Pollard manages to shape up in certain areas, what I mentioned above, will keep Lambie ahead.

Like I said, I like Pollard, I like the way he plays, but it is very one dimensional and international teams will know how to target him and even rattle him.

When he is not in control and getting front foot ball. I think Pollard would be a far better 12 than he is a 10 and actually feel like that is how he is playing. Going Forward, I would much rather pit Damian against Pollard, than Lambie against Pollard, with Jantjies becoming second flyhalf choice (or oppertunity to prove that he can do it at international level).

    So after the World Cup

    9. Reinach/ Faf
    10. Lambie/ Jantjies
    12. Pollard/ Damian
    13. Jesse/ Voster/ Jordaan
    15. Willie/ Jesse

I also wouldn’t mind Pollard playing at 10 for the Bulls, but shifting to 10 for the Boks, as I like the 12 that plays 12 option in the mould of Gittue, Aaron Mauger, Matt Tommua, Christian Lialifano, Kurtley Beale … Even Dan Carter.

I wouldn’t even mind then seeing Damian sometimes used at 13, with Jesse pushed to 14.

You need your general at 10. The last 10 SA had like that was Butch.

I agree though that if Pollard has Fdp, he looks like a different player. He needs a scrummy like that on his inside to be able to just play his natural game. And leave desicion making up to the scrummy. Problem is, is there any scrummy in SA like Fdp and if Fdp is not ready, who do you play if you haven’t given Lambie any game time at 10 leading up to WC?

Can’t agree with Serfontein. He as been average, outside of the JWC.

Getting out of trouble and game management, was our problem in both these games. We got stuck in our own half defending. Who’s job to you feel this was? If Fdp was there, he may have been the guy to do it, but I wouldn’t intrust Willie with this and Ruan has long since leaving SA become only a shadow of the player he promised to be.

Also you can’t just have the best players on the field just for the sake of it. Lambie is the best because of his game management and can’t do that from 15. Pollard though can still do what he does from 12, actually, just with a little more time than he has now, which means those passes that he attempts to make and then can’t because the defense is on him and he then has no option but to go into the tackle, he would probably have time to pull of playing next to Lambie.

Also seems everyone here hates every Bulls player with a passion just because they are Bulls players. This was one of the few sites where discussions were fairly intelligent but when it comes to Lambie it seems thats just not the case. Ive been a Sharks fan my whole life, and i do rate Lambie (never said i didnt). But ive also been a player and a coach so can think objectively as well. But on this site im gonna stick to Lambie should be starting 10 even if he has a broken leg and dont anyone dare argue differently

Joking aside, I was at Loftus when Michalak was selected at flyhalf with Lambie at fullback. They dismantled a fancied Bulls team with some really clever boxing. Nothing, aside from coaching, is keeping the Boks from alternating between Pollard, Lambie and le Roux at first receiver to keep the opposition guessing. I’d immediately entrust Lambie with the exits in our own half to take pressure off Pollard. I honestly think they can all be accommodated in one side. What makes Lambie and le Roux so special is that the number on the their back is simply a number.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 105) : That goes against what the majority seem to want here. As they want a guy playing in the same number in the Bok side as he does in his provincial side. And none of this LeRoux coming in at first receiver cos then he should be a flyhalf not fullback. With Pollard, lambie, Leroux, Kriel and DeAllende in the same side it provides multple options on attack from set plays to counter attacks. But no… Lambie 10, Pollard bench only with no game time. Leroux fullback only and Sithole at 13.
