Hi Sharks (and Bok fans)…What a terrible way to enjoy a long weekend ‘holiday’ on the Coast. I battled traffic all the way from Secunda in time to make the 18:00 kick-off, only to be subjected to an abject, lack-lustre first half display from the Sharks. They looked disinterested and seemed more keen to get off the field and back to Durban. On Saturday I went to my first ever Bok game, more on that debacle later.

The media reports reflect more of what I’ve said above, so let’s dive into it. Please note that there are no overseas reports that I can see.

Media:

“The Sharks opened their 2015 Absa Currie Cup campaign on a disappointing note after losing 33-24 to the Pumas at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Friday evening.” – news24.com

“”We had a very good first half but unfortunately we didn’t have the same tempo and ball continuity in the second half,” Mentz said.” – news24.com

“The visitors were found wanting in all facets of the match during the first 40 minutes as the Pumas turned ball over at will, winning the breakdowns and stealing line-outs with ease as lock Marius Coetzer proved to be a thorn in the Sharks’ side.” – supersport.com

“This would have been considered a shock result not so long ago, but that was before the Pumas’ progression and the Sharks’ decline. The hosts were full value for their win and, based on this performance, will be serious semi-final contenders in a competition shorn of its Springboks.” – sarugbymag.co.za

“Having been dominated at the collisions, with the Pumas also superior in the set pieces and the breakdowns, the Sharks awoke in the second half to close the gap to 24-30 – with less than 10 minutes to go.” – rugby365.com

Twitter:

“The two worst commentators I have ever heard commentating on a rugby game. Please @SuperSportRugby employ intelligent people.#sharksvspumas”

“First Currie Cup game and I’m not inspired yet… #SharksRugby #SSRugby”

“Disappointing Season Opener”

“@TheSharksZA @StevalPumas time to put the trigger and get rid of John and Gary”

Let’s hope that next week’s report is more positive.

  • tough game to watch. the sharks are in a steady decline and I don’t know what can be done to fix it.
we have been blaming gold and smit as the buck stops with them but the players need to also look at themselves and ask if they really wanna play for this once proud union and Jersey.

on a side note my youngest brother who is 8 has finally decided he likes rugby and as the bigger brother it fell to me to explain that his team are the sharks and all his seen is them losing game after game and needless to say his not so keen getting a sharks Jersey for his birthday

  • @Letgo (Comment 1) : The rugby commentary these days have become painful…I can live with Matthew Pierce and Kobus Wiese.

I switch as soon as I see either of Owen Nkumane’s name and Bob Skinstad’s name.

  • @Poisy (Comment 3) : Great article again Stevie and especially in these messy circumstances but for me always good to read and please carry on as you were, but hey ‘steady decline’ you say,you behind the times mate ,that was 2012/2013 this is 2015 ,its now after Jake steadied the situation just free fall, what a mess

  • @benji (Comment 17) : what do you think should be done? It’s all good and well saying what the problems are but I seldom hear a solution that say’s anything different than fire the coach and CEO. plum fired, Jake fired (and read on this site daily how the players didn’t like him and how the General public on here called for his head as well) and few months later same thing for gold. I have no idea what it takes to coach a rugby team but I do know no matter how good or bad you are (p. divvy apparently ) the players are what makes the team work.

  • These are still signs of ills at the sharks. From serious money matters ???? up to Smit’s buddy buddy system lingering. Jimmy is already in Japan and his team is still beating us. Faf is in a bok training squad and we don’t try to sign him? Why are guys of their talent overlooked?
So obvious! They better find the spent dollar quickly…

  • @Poisy (Comment 18) : Mate I no expert, there are plenty of those on this site and yes players do make or play in a team, but the supposed Durban easy going culture, players have a say, does not work, hence no SR trophy. A change in culture is needed despite the protestation of poeple who themselves don’t come to the Rinky Dink anymore, that’s the biggest joke. If you look at all top teams in all sports there is a blue print,a top hardcore autocratic coach, top professionalism combined with discipline culture, this wins games even against better opponents, just ask Beckham about a boot to his head,no Josh Strauss nambi pambi crying, but the Sharks are so far removed from this and that’s why its a mess

  • @benji (Comment 20) : Jake at least started to change and instill this culture but hey let’s rather have a mess

  • @benji (Comment 21) : The biggest problem with Jake…he needed a creative technical assistant – that game plan of his was bland.

He probably has the right attitude in creating a culture of hard work…something the Sharks desperately needs. He would probably have been a better appointment for 2016, with the old guard moving away, and willing youngsters staying behind.

  • As for the Sharks structures…I don’t know. I was encouraged at the warmup game, but the first CC game was a big disappointment. I know the Pumas are a good side, but we just made so many mistakes and were just disappointing. Is it the mental thing again? Can’t perform when it matters?

  • @pastorshark (Comment 24) : like I said a change in culture is drastically needed and with mental discipline the Sharks will be able to put away niggly opponents
