An injury update has been released from within the Springbok camp, ahead of the match against Argentina this weekend.

There was more bad news than good, I’m afraid. Starting with the players available for selection:

Willem Alberts – He is available for selection
Victor Matfield – He is available for selection
Steven Kitshoff – He is available for selection, cleared last week
Frans Malherbe – He is available for selection, cleared last week
Pieter-Steph du Toit – Came through the match okay, needs game time, is available for selection again
Fourie du Preez – He will be assessed and a call made later today

The following players will miss out on the trip:

Jean de Villiers – His knee survived the match in Durban, but he fractured his jaw and faces 4 weeks on the sidelines
Marcell Coetzee – He has a grade 2 medial ligament strain which rules him out of action for 6 weeks. He is now in a race to be fit ahead of the World Cup
Willie le Roux – Rolled his ankle in the first minutes of the match and played through. He has some pain and will miss this match, but will be fine for the World Cup
JP Pietersen – Still unavailable, no further news on his rehab
Jannie du Plessis – Still unavailable, no further news on his rehab
Francois Louw – Still unavailable, no further news on his rehab
Duane Vermeulen – Still unavailable, Duane has started running and will now focus on his fitness and start taking contact
Frans Steyn – He hasn’t been in camp so there is no further news on him

  • @ebenp (Comment 6) : I was disappointed with Jesse on wing. I really hoped he would do good there because he is not good enough on defense to be an effective center. In the 3 test this year, Jesse missed 35% of his tackles, De Allende 27% and Golden Boy 25%. Everybody knows on attack our midfield is great but on defense you can score easy tries

  • @Mutley (Comment 10) : Hence the reason Jesse should play 13 more. Will get better on defense (lets hope) Will put Mvovo at 15 then and Hendricks at 14(worked in 95 LOL)

Reinach is out of form, so if he is 2nd choice, he needs to get game time, with Lambie obvious 10.

    Backline
    9. Cobus (Outsider Hougard… seeing that we don’t do kicking game anymore, I rate him, he lost form doing the kicking thing)
    10. Pat
    11. Brian
    12. Damian
    13. Jesse
    14. Cornell
    15. Luwasi

  • We have arrived at the terrible position of playing our last serious test before the World Cup in the worst shape this team has been in since the last world cup.
What should have been a nice hard warm up to fine tune and iron out a few bumps,is now a desperate win at all costs match.
There is not one player in the entire team who is a certainty in his position, either through injury or the coaches idiotic selections and equally dumb substitutions.
Compare this to the A.B ‘s and the Wallabies.

  • Planning ahead and not actively building for the future is coming back to bite him in the arse. If he did give some other up and coming players the correct amount of time he would have recourse. Plus if we have to add up all his oopsies the list would be astounding compared to previous coaches. Heineke Meyer is nothing more than a bulls coach. He is nowhere near the professionalism and strategic planning required of a world class coach. We have lots of weak old men in our team of which he is one.

  • I had a magic long weekend in Durbs, Other than the rugby. Personally I cannot wait for the end of this WC so for once and for all we can flush the geriatrics out the system and build anew. This reminds me of the 2003 year…..a total shambles. I have sadly maintained we would lose in Q Finals…..to be honest I am now afraid of the Scots and Samoa in our Pool. Heyneke has to do a lot of introspection. Jake and PDV were hammered far more than he has been, and they were all far superior. Heynekes stats are now damning. And he has the politicians all aroused and ;lets face it, the way some players have been treated who can actually blame them! Imagine that Breakfast this morning? Knowing 7 players have run off to a Trade Union to complain? The team spirit must be absolutely obliterated. I truly cannot digest how low we have fallen. absolutely gutted

No I am sorry, I cannot agree with your sentiment – “the way some players have been treated who can actually blame them”.

HM certainly doesn’t have a clue. Pollard should have been subbed a while ago. Jean de Villiers wasn’t even at his best before the injury. Victor Matfield should have been left in retirement, Fourie du Preeze had 3 good games and now he is HM’s only hope. Poor Juan Smith, Bakkies Botha and Jacque Fourie has had to retire 3 times since HM started coaching.

Lambie, De Allende, Goosen, Jantjies, Brussouw, Reinach, Faf, Lood, PSDT, Kolisi, Mapoe … These are all players in the unfortunate position of being behind that group of players. They all would have and should have gotten more game time, had Meyer not had this ficsation with the 2007 WC team. The list goes on actually. His player management is poor. He has not developed enough young players (and indeed as only done so when his hand has been forced). Even Duane Vermuelen was only brought in after Pier Spies got injured.

You don’t go and whine about it. If there is any grounds to that story, I would make a big statement, if I were HM, this weekend.

Leaving Mapoe and JDJ out and calling back a fat J Fourie and a clearly crocked JDV is just folly, given the situation we are in….I agree with all your points…..how on earth Heyneke can believe FDP , Matfield and JDV , to name just 3, can be in that squad is beyond me….

But if you do then a decent coach would manage his re entry.i.e. substitute him before he breaks down again, and pack the bench for such an eventuality.
This was a nothing game,a number of decent flanks could have played.Carr,Whitely,Kriel, guys who have played their hearts out in the season.

  • I know it’s world cup year and HM does not want too many debutants, but we need form players in the side.
Sithole, Combrink,Hougaard and Jaco Kriel are now a necessity especially with all the injuries.
You have de Allende and Jessie Kriel on form – great, but now you need the rest of the backs also on form.

  • He also seems to be riding Pollard quite hard. Not to open another Pollard Lambie debate but this kid was in doubt till shortly before the game. If he is going to back him all the way then why push him back into what would have been a less important game so soon with Lambie at the ready? If he was my ace in the hole I would have been more conservative with him. This plus the props registration plus the lock crisis etc. He really is chaotic he is grasping at straws since he failed to use his time constructively to ensure depth and game time at every position. Seems this guy can only back a single guy per position Willie at 15 Pollard at 10 Duane at 8 , locks are anyone’s guess but he probably play etsebeth into injury there as well. All in all it smacks of an I’ll prepared under qualified man who has been squandering his prep time.

I see the scribes are all fired up about reintroducing a big, ball-carrying blindside. I hope Meyer doesn’t think the same way and revert to type. I shudder to think that Willem Alberts is our only plan B.

  • @grant10 (Comment 28) :

I agree that they can be unhappy, I don’t agree that their reaction should be to complain. I disagree with the players’ presumed complaint against the coach and I disagree that we “can’t blame them” for their reaction. Just play.

How could only a certain group of players complain, for their specific reasons, to the specific group to whom they complained, when under Heyneke Meyer there are many more, of no specific group or position or team or whatever, that can feel “underused”, by HM? Just think of the list in every position.

How many players, aside from HM’s 15 favourites, has had more than 3 starts in a row – if not forced by injury? There is way more than 5 or 7 players that could feel a little unlucky or even unhappy, so why haven’t they issued some sort of complaint in trying to force the coaches hand to select them?

Hope the wings and full back like doing shuttles…Jus aside from the backs…i thought Brussouw was annonymous but Kolisi was huffing and puffing so hard after 5min i thought he was gonna have a stroke. And if he gets injured…well ;) The way i saw PSDT lay on SAT, he is playing a bit more like a flank than lock to be honest.

What would he do with , for example , whiteley vs Vermeulen ?

    Or kiel Vs Mapoe

    Elton VS Pollard ?

    Lood VS Mostert

I dont know . Would be interesting . But how would it work out .

  • So is the consensus that we are in dwang with both player depth and coaching? Alberts will surely bring some relief and options to flanks but at eight and lock and possibly scrumhalf we will be going into a world cup flying blind.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 65) : Lets be honest about it all, even though this past weekend hurt like hell, the biggest mistake we could ever make right now is to drop HM for someone else so close to the WC. The way I see it is HM should do now is to get a assistant in like what JW did with Eddy Jones to help him tweak his wrongs. Someone like Mallet or even Jw could help him hell of allot with something like that.

  • After all the above has been said, and debated about 1000 times, the bottom line remains: Springbok rugby is knee deep in the poo…

This loss was just the excuse for the politicians to jump up and down about the colour of the team. Now HM has to deal with that too, as if things weren’t bad enough.

I don’t see how things can be fixed with the same players/coaching personnel. Obviously players are unhappy (thus going to cosatu), and even others like Lambie etc who just do not get an opportunity must be unhappy.

How it got to this point is criminal. We have such talent in this country, we should be no1 in the world

I would pick him ahead of Burger ,Louw ,Koilisi,Carr,But as you say when was there last a fit Alberts.

But I honestly think that Meyer has plans to play P.S.D.T at flank, or no8 ala Mark Andrews in Kitch’s team.he would like Matfield and Ethebeth, with Marcel ,Louw ,PSDT,and Burger on the bench.

  • @The hound (Comment 86) : I agree with u- a ‘fit’Alberts is a game changer…but when last. I also agree re. PSDT- even on Sat he played more like a flank than a lock clearing rucks etc. He likes to roam and carrying the ball etc- also nice option at a lineout. Burger, Coetzee, Brussouw didnt work. or should i say Burger and Coetzee as Brussouw was playing ruck inspector ala pierre spies. If U had PSDT and Burger at flank then a whitely could play 8. After i saw how unfit Kolisi was id rather swap him for Mahoje-altho he too goes missing at test level. Etzebeth also looked flat this weekend like his team mates…having been injured and having played his guts out vs Oz and NZ how fit is he really? whats left in that tank. Maybe we will see Matfield and Flippie Van Der Merwe this weekend (is he still playing or sulking? i can never keep up) Apparently Kitshoff is fit, so too Malherbe, let them start with Heinke on the bench with Nyankane – i dont think Marcel Van Der Merwe is any answer.

  • With the news of Hyneke Meyer’s contract extension i know guys are writing off the Boks and blah blah but i dont necessarily think this is so bad. After this RWC he will need to invest in a new set of players. However its not that easy. Players are constantly moving abroad or taking up dual SA/Japanese contracts. As coach he has to both select the best players but also give a fair shot to local guys so as not to devalue the local game- a very tricky balancing act…even before thinking about Mr Govt. I truly think Meyer is a good man manager, however what im not so convinced about is that his assistant coaches are the est we can get…so thoughts on perhaps looking to improve those guys?
