The Cheetahs have named their team for the second round of Currie Cup fixtures…and the news is that former Sharks flyhalf, Fred Zeilinga gets his first start for the men in white.

In the first round of fixtures, the Cheetahs went with rookie flyhalf Niel Marais. Marais had a very good Varsity Cup for the eventual Champions, the Shimlas! He will have built a good relationship with the Shimlas coach at the time, Franco Smith. Smith was promoted and took over the reigns at the Cheetahs. He promptly gave Marais a shot towards the end of the Super Rugby Campaign, and to be honest, he made a very good impression, but the Cheetahs were thumped badly by the Bulls at home in week 1 of the Currie Cup Competition and Marais is one of the players to the price of that heavy defeat.

Zeilinga, who moved away from the Sharks after receiving very little game time there and dropping below Lionel Cronje in the pecking order, will be thrilled to receive his chance this weekend. He will also be wanting to make a very good impression, as Sias Ebersohn has returned to Bloemfontein after a few seasons playing for the Western Force in Super Rugby. Ebersohn must surely being eyeing the number 10 jersey for the Cheetahs and it will take a good performance by Zeilinga to keep Ebersohn on the bench.

The Cheetahs face a tough task as they tackle the defending champions, Western Province, at Newlands. If Fred can spearhead a turnaround for the Cheetahs, he will certainly have gone a long way to making the flyhalf position his own at his new home. I, for one, wish Fred everything of the best and hope that he has a blinder. Good luck Fred!

Cheetahs: 15. AJ Coertzen, 14. Clayton Blommetjies, 13. Francois Venter, 12. Ryno Benjamin, 11. Raymond Rhule, 10. Fred Zeilinga, 9. Shaun Venter, 8. Niell Jordaan, 7. Henco Venter, 6. Boom Prinsloo, 5. Francois Uys (capt), 4. Armandt Koster, 3. Luan de Bruin, 2. Jacques du Toit, 1. Caylib Oosthuizen.
Replacements:
16. Elandre Huggett, 17. Nicolaas van Dyk, 18. Hugo Reniel, 19. Gerhard Olivier, 20. Zee Mkhabela, 21. Tertius Kruger, 22. Sias Ebersohn.

  • last week was weird. in the SR pretty much same side thumped stronger Bulls side (who did not pitch up) and this time it was exactly the opposite. it looked like the Cheetahs took their foot off the gass after their first try and got smashed

  • @Kabouter (Comment 2) : I didn’t watch the game…but maybe. The Bulls certainly stamped on the Cheetahs when they were down, though…

  • Not too sure what to make on this side…they could surprise but i just feel there is a slight lack of quality throughout in key positions

  • @pastorshark (Comment 3) : one on one defence was poor and a few long range tries resulted. Hougie also had a good game and credit to him, at least he is not moping on probably missing out on WC
