Frans heads back to…well….France

Sharks and Springbok utility back Francois Steyn has been confirmed as the fourth member of the 2015 Super Rugby squad to sign with Montpellier ahead of the new French season.

Former coach Jake White, now in charge at the southern French club, has added a healthy number of south African players to his roster, Steyn just the latest name to join a line-up that include the du Plessis brothers, Bismarck and Jannie as well as ace young scrumhalf Cameron Wright.

The 28-year-old will rejoin the Springbok camp this week and should be in contention for a World Cup place, before departing for French shores. While his second Sharks stint was perhaps less successful than his first one, we’d nevertheless like to wish Frans well on his new journey.

  • It is Jake White who has perhaps been able to get the best out of Frans, so maybe not a bad move for him

  • Steyn loved him and the du plessis brothers signed pre contracts before White was made coach. from what i hear, those who hated him where just those two. Hate is a strong word. Found it difficult to work with him.

  • Good luck Frans. Not your fault John Smit is an unstoppable moron. Go join Jake in a proper pro setup. You are only 28. If you play to potential, youll be one of the worlds highest paid players within 2 seasons, Im sure.

  • @bchanakira2 (Comment 3) : Better question to answer would be who did these two ever find it easy to work with.
Still feel that there is a strong bond amongst the Bethlehem boys, and coincidence has FA to do with all three ending up at Montpeillier.

  • Guys in all honesty we will never know the whole truth, I can tell you from Esterhuizen’s point of view he did not get along with Jake and was going to leave but then Jake left and he signed with the Sharks, that is only one player though, the rest as we do not know the whole truth we can only speculate and assume.

  • One thing that does concern me is since Smitty took over, we have lost serious talent and could only get worse, who is to blame?? again we can only speculate but losing games with the poor rugby we are dishing up will make matters worse and for sure will either drive more players away or stop others from signing.

Yes we happened to sign to Free Staters, but lets not forget they are going through massive changes themselves.

  • My other concern is the large amount of players we do sign that are ending their careers, surely we should be looking at players at the top of their game with a solid career still ahead of them?

  • @Orlok Tsubodai (Comment 19) : Maybe not the 2007 version, but he’s been a hard grafter of late, just because he is not in the spotlight all the time doesn’t mean hes a terrible player, in fact 2014 was to thank for him getting us to the Semi’s, 2007 he was also to thank for getting us to the final. I still say id much rather have him in our team than the attitude that Willie Le roux is bringing to the team next year. Never mind the fact that he cannot tackle, something which the 2013 CC was to thank to Frans as well. Its been proven so many times, that a bad Frans Steyn in the team still makes the Sharks a much stronger team on the field.
Steyn with the Du brothers are among only a few players who would ONLY play for the Sharks in south Africa, that’s something worth allot more than these two year imports that we get seasonally.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 23) : Very well put,on his day Frans Steyn the best rugby player I ever saw.If he had had the stability in his career that a Dan Carter,Brian o’Drisco,or even a Jean de Villiers had he would have been greater than Danie Gerber.Unfortunately every time he seems to be getting it together he ups sticks and heads in the opposite direction and starts from scratch again.l

  • Frans the enigma…def has had a troubled career since first moving overseas. First struggled to hold down a starting place at Racing…then got his place only to be told that only local players would be picked for the Boks. So returned to SA only to find out that foreign players will be picked. Injuries and stints in Japan meant he never really got going again. Now injured and a family tragedy. U do have to feel for the guy. All the best sportsman are arrogant. Good luck to him and hopefully this clears the cobwebs in somebodys mind at the Sharks and they realise they need someone suitable to do player recruitment and retention as sorry to say the Academy isnt producing anything…well besides Leopards players it seems

Too much too soon,a bit shit if you that talented and the your career peaked in its second year.

  • @The hound (Comment 27) : After a high like that im sure motivation and rediscovery the passion would be tough. I just feel that both have had stop/start careers since then- possibly as a result of that search for motivation and wanting to be financially secure. I know this is left field but after that world cup i would have moved frans to 10 and told him to only play there with his now wiser head on his shoulders…likewise would have moved JP to 15.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 28) : I tend to agree, both these players WANTED to play in those positions. Look how AE bemoaned JW for making him a flank…. point is, play a player where he wants to play, you will never get the same motivation from a player playing in a position where he doesn’t want to play in ;)

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 29) : I think both Steyn at centre and JP on the wing were happy to play there. I just feel that at 10 and 15 it would have given them more motivation and passion for a new challenge as lets be honest both could play centre and wing pretty well without trying too hard

I felt with J.P especially this year that he was just going through the motions,he had made his money in the piss easy Japanese league and now he had to put his body on the line for much less money in a brutal Super rugby series.
