The Australian World Cup squad has been announced with a few surprise inclusions and omissions, most notable being ex-captain James Horwill.

Apart from Horwill missing out, Nic White must wonder what more he must do to prove his worth after also missing the cut. Coach Michael Cheika has opted for only two specialist scrumhalves in Nick Phipps and Will Genia, Matt Giteau obviously the other back up.

Horwill misses out to Dean Mumm, Rob Simmons, Kane Douglas and Will Skelton.

The surprise inclusions are prop Toby Smith and flank Sean McMahon, neither who have had any game time with the Wallabies so far this year.

Australia squad:

Backs: Israel Folau, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Rob Horne, Drew Mitchell, Henry Speight, Joe Tomane, Tevita Kuridrani, Kurtley Beale, Matt Giteau, Matt Toomua, Quade Cooper, Bernard Foley, Will Genia, Nick Phipps

Forwards: Wycliff Palu, David Pocock, Michael Hooper, Ben McCalman, Sean McMahon, Scott Fardy, Kane Douglas, Dean Mumm, Rob Simmons, Will Skelton, Stephen Moore (captain), Tatafu Polota-Nau, Greg Holmes, Sekope Kepu, Scott Sio, James Slipper, Toby Smith

Yup – One week you play a blinder and win the Rugby Championship for your country, the next you are left out of the World Cup squad.

    Strange…

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : Very strange…i wonder if his pending move to France had anything to do with it? Still, when last did Genia play well? @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 5) : Genia/Cooper combo to play against the Poms ;)

  • I think this proves theres one boss at the Wallabies and Cheika, doesn’t need the disruption White and Higginbotham bring.I still think Pocock,Hooper and Higginbotham is a deadly combination.

Someone else said the same thing, his move to join the South African team in France could well be part of the reason..

Still think he would have added value to the team..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : Or you can look at it as one week you almost single handedly lose the Rugby Championship for your team and get rewarded punished for it by getting a world cup call up. White must feel gutted.

  • @JD (Comment 9) : A lot of Bulls players,as many of Jake White’s 2007 team that can still walk, and any guy whose father or grand father played for the Boks.

  • @Rooiwillie (Comment 15) : Yeah, a bit weird…SIX loosies…but only two hookers…5 props is ok…one of the looseheads will also be able to play tighthead (surely?)…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 16) : Yes I suppose Slipper has experience at tighthead. Against the likes of England on home turf scrums will be very important. Only two hookers (one of which is the injury prone Tatafu Polota-Nau) is imo a huge risk. Considering Moore is also their captain an injury to him leaves them in a predicament – as they will only be able to bring in reinforcements for long term injury and would have to sacrifice their captain to bring in a new hooker (i.e. would not be able to give him time to recover).
