The DHL Stormers have just confirmed the signing of Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit.

According to WP Director of Rugby Gert Smal (speaking to the official website), “We are excited that Pieter-Steph has decided to return (home) to the Cape, where he was born and raised, and so too is Cornal Hendricks – a tall, fast wing who is a proven performer at international level.”

“We want Western Province Rugby to continue to attract the biggest names in South Africa and someone like Pieter-Steph du Toit certainly fits the bill.”

I’ll not share my feelings on this one, since I really don’t have anything nice to say.

  • the issues are that we took a promising young player and invested time and money into developing him

his now (when fit) top 5 in the world in his position

he was on a big salary, and spent alot of the last two years injured

I can understand that he’l like to move back to the province he grew up in, thats where all his family is and his GF

but look at it from the sharks supporters perspective, his still very young, he could have given us 4 or atleast 2 more year of service and them move on, he’d still be able to make decent money, his 22, he can go on to command a good income till 32+

we developed you and we had endless patients with you when you were injured

worst of all we dont exactly have a ton of other options in the lock position other than lewies (which could be a silverlining)

JC is young and hyron andrews even younger

botha left, marco is old, ousthuizen is inconsistent

maybe we should grab one of the 3 lions locks that played against us this weekend, their all good. Or get a wp lock they have extra now

Lood would be awesome, always rated him, could understand why the bok plan was to play matfield till the cows came home instead of have matfield groom lood

thats always the biggest issue for me, do we have a decent replacement in the squad

much was said about angel di maria leaving manchester united for PSG, but tney have 4/5 good replacement options in the team, so who cares

  • @pastorshark (Comment 8) : Hi There Sir…apparently the Goosen deal was dependent on Goosen getting a SARU contract, which has not been forthcoming, so the deal appears dead in the water….lots of talk about Marnitz Boshoff though, seems to be pretty much on from what I am hearing. The fetcher question again on everyones lips here in CT…that Cloete fellow will probably start vs Cheetahs Friday night, some here reckon he may be the answer…..Dobson rates him big time…I have not seen enough to make any statements though….Yes, for me its a no brainer….Brussow tops that wish list….F Louw seems intent on staying at Bath . Another I rate highly is Boom Prinsloo, underrated and someone who is busy at the breakdown and carries well too….Marnus Schoeman of the Pumas also ticks some boxes….that Kleinhans of the Sharks impressive too vs the Lions….

  • Good luck to the young man… I hope he stays injury free and that he and Etzebeth go on to become a legendary lock pairing for the Boks in the mould of Matfield & Bakkies.

If Eddie Jones does become the Stormers coach as per the rumours it’s going to be a great place for a young player like PSDT to develop his rugby.

As a Sharks supporter I will definitely envy the Stormers if they bag a quality coach like Jones… Sure beats our no name bunch… Can’t blame anyone for choosing a quality well run business as their employer over the mess we have.

Scrumming is about all 8 men not just the front 3, People thinking the WP front row is suddenly world beaters? they are not and it showed when they played for the Boks, Jannie, Beast and Bismark our was clear to see, Put Eben behind your TH and then then Put Oosthuizen behind your TH and see who gives the most support to the TH.

Also looking at the wings at the Bulls we should maybe look at that type of wing, industrious, strong, fast, big and very skillful, like their FB

If others can steal from us we can surely do the same?

  • Its true the smaller unions lose players to the three big money unions (bulls, sharks, Wp) and in turn they lose players to one another and europe

its been encouraging to see young players choose game time over sitting on the bench or playing vodacom cup, example that come to mind would be Micheal van der spyt and johan sadie after he didnt work out at the bulls

as for a supet rugby HC Im cool with either JM or D Muir, johan always speaks very clearly and to the point when he explains things on tv, we just need people aroud him to remind him that his not a drill commander when he gets upset lol, lions players say his bi-polar

on that note, we’re struggling with front row depth and yet over the last few years we let danie mienie, allen dell, maks van dyk, and wiaan herbt go, cos they were stuck lower on the depth chart under beast, jannie, chadwick, adriaanse, thomas

still we should have known jannie would leave soon and beast would be with the boks

Great player ( i think, as hasnt played that much to be honest) but didnt add much value to the Sharks when you consider how many games he played over his time here. So am i sad to see him go, of course but its not like a major piece of the puzzle left as he was never really part of the puzzle. Sharks rugby in a serious freefall at the moment and unless something is actively don to correct it PSDT wont be the last one flying out of King Shaka…contract or no contract

Catrikillis and Coleman preferred with a move for Goosen and or Marnitz Boshoff being rumoured widely to assist Stormers next year. Not sure what the future holds for Robert Du Preez, always rated him myself. Notshe Carr and Elstaht are all carriers, none play to the ball . The balance at wp looseforward is structurally flawed….Cloete may come through. Dobson certainly talking him up so time will tell. I have a feeling Cloete will start Friday

  • @grant10 (Comment 60) : Catrikilis gone after CC so the choice for WP is promote from within or look elsewhere…very often the look elsewhere option means u lose the guys from within but time will tell. For me personally, in this modern game you cannot have a mutually exclusive player that either carries or plays to the ball- they must do both well. Michael Hooper/Richie McCaw and Francois Louw cases in point. I also see that coaches are trying to create less rucks where possible due to the free for all nature in which they are reffed. Just on Cloete-i rated him highly when he was at the Sharks…he never got a look in though as they preferred Jacques Botes and then Marcel Coetzee. So lets see if he can make it at WP. I think ur u21 guy or maybe he played Vodacom Cup was also very good one the ground, cant remember his name.

Remember WP do not have a Bismarck or Deon Fourie at 2 that are virtual secondary fetchers ….also with Duane Vermeulen gone we dont have an 8 that plays to the ball anymore either. Notshe, Elstaht and Carr have there strengths, but fetching certainly not there standout quality…..we simply have to improve here or will be found out constantly…

Early days, but for me it starts with their 9 and 10 who are playing great rugby with the forwards providing them with a more than decent platform, and a very good defence conceding the very little in terms of tries.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 69) : The Bulls are clearly cheating. They are playing this high tempo offloading game and their new players look to settled and all on board…this is clearly cheating. As we all know u first have to go through a ‘rebuilding’ phase where new players have to be slowly integrated and the new game plan will make them make lots of errors so results will suffer to start off with for the first year. I mean everyone knows this- just ask Gary Gold

The Sharks for the most part definitely lack the former and we’re less and less sure about the latter.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 76) : Lol…..ya Mr Gary Excuses Bronze always looks externally to find blame or reasons for a loss instead of looking internally and admitting he is not cut out for coaching at this level. He still hasn’t been able to speed up our game after 7 months in charge. Hougaard used to take years clearing the ball. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the speed of his game on Saturday. Gary thinks the pace of the game miraculously increases without any preparation on the training field.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 80) : So u are in agreement that the Bulls are cheating then? :) Its not a hugely complicated reason for the way the Bulls are playing (add to that the Lions/WP and Pumas to an extent). The coaching staff have laid a good defensive pattern…then on attack the back and forwards have just been told to play what is in front of them and play what suits them. Dont differ from the reason u were signed. So what have u got…players playing to their own strengths and backing themselves. Something we perhaps also forget- forwards are vital in playing ‘attractive’ rugby as they attack too…just in different areas

  • @SheldonK (Comment 84) : Yup, I’m in agreement. Nollis is backing/trusting the players and very likely placing a large emphasis on executing the basics well (well it seems that way at least). No reason the Sharks coaches can’t do that too. We don’t have the same quality of player in every position (hence my comment about our feeder system vs theirs) but I’m sure we’d still be way more competitive than we are at the moment if we’re executing the basics well at the very least.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 101) : I think its also a case of a lack of leadership…Wentzel has been ok but he doesnt strike me as a leader that guys will put their bodies on the line for. When last did we see a sharks side with a bit of passion and desire running out and smashing guys in defense. The players look scared like deer in the headlights and unsure what to do. Those jitters then lead to handling errors, bad timing at lineouta etc. Very worrrying times

  • The sharks came up from nothing with lesser known players and almost no budget to dominate for a decade. In that decade we beat teams like province who were settled for more than 50 years in the premier League, had a big budget and big name stars in their stable. We can do it again so I don’t care what weepee buy it’s the team on the day , and it will be so much sweeter if we beat them with all their big names. So bye Pieter wish you well let’s look after the men who want to be here and become team of the decade again.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 110) : It’s the manner of the win. Hence I am one of the guys whom after a win still gets pissed off if our game and tactics were not good. I’m a believer that luck and gees are not the foundations that your game should be based on. You can see that this Bulls team is well coached. The games we won during the SR competition were based on luck. That isn’t sustainable. We need systems that incorporate the basics and our playing philosophy. In that way if you do lose you are able to accept a loss cause at the end of the day there has to be a winner. A loss based on players not be equipped by the coach I can never accept.
