With only one day to go until the big announcement I thought that I would see how I look with a selectors hat on. As such, I’ve selected the squad that I would take to the World Cup. I’ve made my decision based on experience, form and versatility.

Just for fun, select your squad in the comments section below and let’s see how close we get when the official squad is announced tomorrow evening.

My squad is:

1. Beast, Nyakane, Koch
2. Bismarck, Brits, Strauss
3. Jannie, Frans Malherbe (Koch can play 1 and 3)
4. Eben and Lood
5. Matfield and Pieter-Steph
6. Brussouw and Louw
7. Alberts and Coetzee
8. Vermeulen and Schalk
9. Fourie du Preez, Pienaar and Reinach
10. Lambie and Pollard
11. Mvovo
12. de Allende and Frans Steyn
13. Kriel and de Villiers
14. Habana and Mapoe
15. Willie le Roux

It’s a bit unconventional but I’ve selected an 18 forwards and 13 backs mix. I think that the heavy conditions will mean that the forwards have to work harder and will require more rotation than the backs. Due to my limited number of backs I have selected various utility backs.

Lambie can cover 10, 12 and 15.
Frabn Steyn can cover every position except for scrumhalf.
Pienaar can cover 9, 10, 15 and wing if need be.
Kriel covers 13 and 15.
Mvovo covers wing and 15.
Mapoe covers wing and 13.

My selections probably aren’t everybody’s cup of tea but I feel that this squad would give us a good chance of bringing home the cup. There are some great players that haven’t made the cut but in each position I’ve tried to select two options with some spots covered by a utility player.

  • Kolisi will go ahead of Marcel due to injure.

Does Kolisi deserve that spot? not at all.

  • Good squad, but I think Kitshoff is a better option than Koch. Koch is a greenhorn. Unfortunately Paige will be picked ahead of Reinach. Also, Whiteley should be there but Heyneke seems to have offloaded him…

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 2) : According to Tank, Kitshoff is not going. He is getting is info from ‘sources close to Where and the Boks’ so pinch of salt for now.

I also expected to see Paige, also completely undeservedly. Even if he had a good season, he wasn’t given a chance to play for the boks and prove himself, can’t just decide now to take him to the world cup.

If some of these rumours are true that I actively hope we do as bad as possible at the world cup.

  • Frans Steyn already left the Bok camp and will undergo rehabilitation with the Sharks for his pectoral muscle injury

  • Not a bad looking team. I would take, keeping in mind this is to get as close to the official selection as possible:

    1. Beast, Nyakane
    2. Bismarck, Brits, Strauss
    3. Jannie, Malherbe, Koch
    4. Eben, PSDT
    5. Matfield, Lood
    6. Louw, Kolisi
    7. Alberts, Mohoje
    8. Vermuelen, Schalk
    9. du Preez, Pienaar, Reinach
    10. Lambie, Pollard
    11. Habana, Mvovo
    12. De Allende, De Villiers
    13. Kriel, Steyn
    14. Pietersen
    15. Le Roux

Not the team I would pick, but what I’m expecting to be picked.

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 2) : I would like to see Kitshoff there but from what I hear he is still injured.

Whitely should have got more chances but Heyneke seemed to settle on his favourites early on and not many players were given a fair shot at making the World Cup squad.

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 6) : I think you’re right.

My problem is that Jantjies and Paige weren’t given chances and Pollard started 4 out of 5 games. Reinach was given minimal game time, Oupa played a bit off the bench, Kolisi hardly featured.

We are in trouble with our player managament…

  • (1) I wouldnt bring devilliers – What form is he in anyway? I would rather include serfontein. At least you know what you get.
    (2) Coenie instead of koch.
    (3) I would omit Pienaar – He has a decent game one out of 3 at best at the moment and have only 2 scrumhalves.include Pieterson as an extra wing. Our wings are short and we need the added height when playing good kicking teams. Im sure after 8 weeks off his fitness will be back in place.

Take your cues from the pundits – they already have the squad.
When Mallet doesnt pick Pienaar or Coetzee, he’s not shooting his mouth off – he knows something you dont.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 16) : The selection fiasco this year highlights the need for an SA “A” side that takes part in a top notch competition against “A” sides from other countries. New Zealand played the NZ Maori and a New Zealand Barbarians side so effectively they tested out about 80 players whereas we used 30 or so.

I’m just wondering if he’ll maybe make room for Morne. Also, I think he’ll go with Marcell ahead of Brussouw, even though Marcell will only just be ready to play. Aside from that, I think you’re pretty much spot on.

Or lets just say, that’s my prediction for the 31 … I’m just not certain of who will miss out for Morne.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : He has played both sides of the scrum fairly successfully. I kno u refer to that game where it got to uncontested scrums but thats more the math days rules than his ability to play both sides. I just think in the UK a full replacement tight 5 is probably a wise idea.

  • @Mutley (Comment 33) : I didnt know that bout players in CC not considered, interesting. Would be a big call not to take Lood and rather Mahoje. Same with Paige over Reinach…Paige has never played an international, and its very different to Super rugby. Pienaar can cover 10 so may only take 2 flyhalfs, unless he deems Lambie as fullback cover so then will take 3.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 58) : If the rumoured squad of 31 is true it will, in my opinion, go down as 1 of the most insipid, unimaginative, form less, injury clouded WC squad ever selected in the history of SA Rugby….essentially it will lay waste to any recognition of Superrugby form and open the way to more departures for overseas as prospective Bok players will see no benefit to playing superrugby . Just my view but Heyneke has botched 2015 big time. Despite trying to find some semblance of a plan all I see is old crocks, players with no or little form, huge gamble after huge gamble…..this is no way to go into a WC….in fact its a lesson in how to do things wrong.

If super rugby form is overlooked then why stay and get smashed week in and week out when you can go overseas for more money and less games? Its really not a tough decision when you think about it

  • @SheldonK (Comment 67) : The SA players are already voting with their feet….the money is only part of their decision, the incessant travel over time zones is attractive for a season or 2 then it becomes very tough. Superrugby has been responsible for many players deciding to leave, its just not a good model for SA rugby….Europe was always the route to go, based on many other factors too. But thats another sugbect altogether. Reality is Heyneke has proved to be a bit of a forked tongue chap. He has spoken of overseas form showing true character etc then chosen to leave out a whole host of players who proved form in Australia and new zeeland….Heyneke has been 1 nonsense hypocritical statement after another. And then SARU going to give him 4 more years? Thank heavens I have Man United and the Stormers, because clearly this Bok team is going to be Meyers, not mine or many other people who once upon a time gave a damn….

  • @grant10 (Comment 68) : Oh dear a Man Utd fan…now how can we take u seriously ;) As for Meyer, i think his statements to the press are what has gotten into trouble. The reality is that he had his heart set on a certain group of players to do the job for him but a lot of those guys are now either injured, out of form or not available. So Meyer has panicked a bit. Whether he was right or wrong in backing those guys is another debate but the fact is that he did.

If the rumours are to be believed he is now going to pick untested players to appease the jersey burners and piss off the other side of the extreme. Along with that and his use of old/injured players he is going to end up pissing everyone of other than the sheeple.

Another point is that they weren’t fit, and Meyer dealt with the situation awfully, proving he is a terrible coach.

Your Meyer defense is getting a bit thin.

As it stands we have no idea who will really play as his first choice. Yes it would have meant that some young guns miss out but so be it. Im not saying Meyer has been perfect, calm down. All im saying is that he did have a plan but all those injuries threw it out the window so he has tried to improvise…something he isnt good it. Lets be honest there hs not been 1 positive comment regarding the Boks this year…by all accounts we should actually just not bother going to the world cup this year…send Zimbabwe instead

I know we very negative about the Boks and think Ackermann or whoever should coach them instead but its the same negativity we have every 4 years when picking a world cup side. Can we not get behind the guys that are actually picked? And back the coach to do his best to get them to win? • Honestly gents, I don’t think that colour is the issue here. We live in SA, we need to suck that up – what is a travesty is the fact that we have plenty of players of colour who could have been given game time to gain experience at international level but we have ‘pussy-footed’ around with players based on a selection system that choses players who have had family members as Springboks, who are ex-Bulls players and are Afrikaans. Coupled with that, we have failed to place correct succession planning in place over the last 4 years so we need to have a less than 100% in form Captain to be taken on tour because we need his Leadership skills. RWC is about building now for 4 years time not crises managing at the 11th hour.

Just wanted to highlight the part you’re actually allowed to post here and to which I’d like to reply ;-) .

I think that’s the biggest problem with Meyer.

He kept playing Jean into the ground when De Allende could have been given game time years ago. Look, Damian ended up grabbing his “injury forced” opportunity, but wouldn’t it be better had he been played since end 2013 start 2014 when we all started seeing his potential?

Heyneke selects Siya, he also gets a run because of Ruan Botha (whats that prodigal flank everyone harps on about from the Bulls?), getting injured. Siya actually has an excellent Debut, plays himself into the team and then last year doesn’t get a look in at all? Yes his form wasn’t excellent during SR 2014, but you should back your players shouldn’t you?

Marcell has also only been getting play time because Willem was injured all the time.

And so you can go through all the positions, HM hardly ever gave any game time to anyone, if it was not injury enforced on him.

Morne Steyn was played every singly game under Meyer in 2012, the entire in bound tour and Rugby Championship 2013 and most of the end of year tour, when he was clearly not the best option anymore. His flyhalves should have been settled by now, but he is still not sure what he wants … bringing Morne back last year, only to drop him after missing touch with that penalty against AUS.

Since 2012 HM has been in charge of 40 test, of which Patrick Lambie started at 10, 7 times, Handre Pollard about 8 times, Johan Goosen 2 times and Morne Steyn more than 20 times.

Why not look at lock for bad management of a position. Why would HM keep on playing the Matfield and Bakkies at every chance he got? Jannie and Beast should have been rested on at least one EOYT.

And worst of all, or best of all, we said these things as they were happening.

Someone said to me the other day, hindsight is 20 20, but these were the things we were complaining about from the start with HM and now that we can see the result of his bad management, people are making excuses – injuries etc.

Maybe he’s just not a good player manager. Maybe someone should be selecting his squad and to some degree prescribe the team that he should play and players that should be getting game time, because I actually think that the Boks have played some attractive rugby under Meyer, we are just struggling to put the best team together.

I would have loved, Faf/Paige/Hougaard,Kriel, Whitely, Mapoe, Kolisi, Scarra, (even Lambie) to have been given more playing time in the last 5 matches. That way I would have had a better idea of which of these players would boost my WC squad. based on form they all would, but based on lack of Bok exposure (aside from Hougaard/ Lambie) non of them would.

I would not have played the following guys much in the last 5 games:

Beast, Bis, Jannie (Bismarck wanted to play for some form, but by game two, he was back and should have been rested).
Eben (also wanted to play for form)
    Victor
    Louw, Marcell
    Ruan (would have played Faf/Hougaard/Reinach)
Pollard, Lambie (both needed a game or two, but I would have given at least two games to Jantjies).
Habana (would have played Mvovo, Mapoe, Hendricks)
JPP (He was never fully fit, I would have left him to the later games)
Willie (We know he is our man, play the back up Jesse, Kirchner, Frans Steyn).

De Allende and Jesse was a find in the midfield, but I would have given another combination a run by game 3 or 4 (Jan/Jean and Mapoe).

Now some of the above players are on the crocked list and the ones that wasn’t played are surely not ready to be taken to a WC.

The team I would select, keeping HM’s bad player management (and injuries) of 2015 in mind.

Beast, Nyakane, Jannie, Malherbe, Coenie (experience).
    Bis, Strauss, Britz
    Eben, Lood, PSTD, Victor (C)
Marcell (I would risk it), Flouw, Willem, Kolisi, Duane (C), Schalk (C)
Ruan, Hougaard (form and experience) Fdp (Reinach didn’t play enough)
    Lambie (C ;-) ), Pollard
    Habana, JPP
De Allende, Jesse, Mapoe (experienced (age) in form player and only genuine 13 cover) Jean/Steyn (I don’t believe in selecting Jean on sentiment, he hasn’t been the form center in the country for a while/Steyn if fit would always be in my squad based on his versatility. He basically covers every backline position and his massive kicking boot always gives him an edge).
    Willie, Mvovo

I copied and pasted that from @Julesgr8ter (Comment 102). I agree, Jean hasn’t been the best center in SA for a while now. And Schalk is also there on sentiment. I would have selected a younger captain 4 years ago if I was HM. Duane Vermeulen comes to mind.

  • @Letgo (Comment 124) : I tend to agree. JdV is the wrong guy there. But the same can be said about the 2011 WC JS should not have been there either. Two WC’s in a row with the wrong Captain.

  • @The hound (Comment 122) : Cartel ? are you serious? Luckily its not the same Cartel that is running the Sharks as then SA would be in bigger shit.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 125) : Look John at least had played some rugby in the 6 months before the World Cup and went in with a World Cup,a Tri Nations,a Lions series and a Currie Cup to his name,
