Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has named his 31 man squad for the Rugby World Cup to be held in England and Wales, kicking off in three weeks’ time. The squad has it’s talking points, much of which were discussed before the announcement already.

Jean de Villiers will lead the team attempting to become the first to win the coveted prize a third time. His inclusion completes a very long recovery from what looked like a career ending knee injury.

Looking at the squad, Coenie Oosthuizen’s ability to pack on both sides of the scrum has booked him a seat ahead of the likes of Vincent Koch, while Schalk Brits’ knowledge of the European setup gets him a spot.

Pieter-Steph du Toit, although listed as a lock, should be counted as a utility forward with the experiment of playing him on the side of the scrum gaining momentum. Siya Kolisi also gets a spot instead of an injured Marcell Coetzee. One has to feel that he will be the first one on a plane should a loose forward go down injured.

As for the backs, Rudy Paige gets the nod ahead of an out of sorts Cobus Reinach while Morne Steyn is back in the mix after not playing at all this international season so far. His experience stands him and the Springboks in good stead.

Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel unsurprisingly complete the centres with captain de Villiers, while Lwazi Mvovo impressed in his last start against Argentina, booking himself a seat ahead of Cornal Hendricks. Zane Kirchner also seemingly doing enough to warrant a spot, his European knowledge perhaps sneaking him into the squad.

Props: Jannie du Plessis, Frans Malherbe, Tendai Mtawarira, Trevor Nyakane, Coenie Oosthuizen
Hookers: Schalk Brits, Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss
Locks: Lood de Jager, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Victor Matfield
Loose Forwards: Willem Alberts, Schalk Burger, Siya Kolisi, Francois Louw, Duane Vermeulen

Scrumhalves: Fourie du Preez, Ruan Pienaar, Rudy Paige
Flyhalves: Pat Lambie, Handre Pollard, Morne Steyn
Centres: Damian de Allende, Jean de Villiers (Capt), Jesse Kriel
Wings: Bryan Habana, Lwazi Mvovo, JP Pietersen
Fullbacks: Willie le Roux, Zane Kirchner

  • “Out of sorts Cobus Reinach” – not that I’m saying he’s been at his best, or even that his best (in patches) is even good enough, but how could you tell from 3 minutes here and there? He actually looked pretty sharp in Durban when he was given more than 3 min, 17 to be exact.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 8) : I disagree

he probibly feels marcel isnt fit enough yet

    rates paige higher than cobus

im not on board with picking morne

I always figured he’d pike zane, which i dont mind, his solid, people compare him to willie, but their very different players that happen to play in the same position. And he can cover outside centre and wing. Although if lambie were being considered a fb then maybe they could have left zane and picked jantjies

but lambie is obviously fh cover for pollard, even though i’d have pollard covering for him

theres much to debate here, even though their are 31 spots, everyone will find issue in something. Which is fine

just like i would have picked scarra ahead of brits, next world cuo we’l have all our hookers never having been to a wc

That’s what I don’t get – the ease with which people say “go All Blacks” or “go England”.

That said in jest, but watching the Lions tonight,it is quite amazing that Redlinghuis never made that team.
Fourie du Preez has a helluva lot to live up to,if he fails everything he has done previously will be forgotten, same with Mattfield,Burger,JPP and Habbanna.

  • @Orlok Tsubodai (Comment 53) : disappointment is not the word , if you lost all your believe and faith in something or a team in this instances it becomes hate.
Yes some people say it way to easily but for true supporters when they come to that stage, you must realize that it was not a decision taken lightly.
it is painfull not supporting the team that you loved for a very long time but there is only two things worse and they stand equal is supporting them or not supporting anyone at all, when you are not supporting anyone else a part of you will always want to support them

  • OK here is my 2 cents worth:
    1. From the players in the squad you can still select a very strong match 23.
    2. A really big concern is scrum half with only Pienaar match fit that knows the structures. FDP fitness could be a problem and Paige that must learn the structures could be left as his only back up.
    3. Loose forwards could also be a problem as at least 4 had some injury concerns in recent times.
    4. My biggest concern is that we did what Spain did at the last Soccer world cup by taking a super experienced but old squad that can not keep up with the others!!!!

  • Look, this certainly wouldn’t have been my Bok squad… And it certainly wouldn’t be “your” Bok squad… But for the most part I can see the reasons behind each of HM’s selections… He’s had to try and balance form, experience and transformation, plus take a risk on players he thinks will add more value in Northern Hemisphere conditions than they maybe would elsewhere.

I’m not going to even attempt to go into them here… Cos it’s obvious people don’t want to hear reason at this point… So vent away everyone, vent away :-)

PS: the one player I feel really really sorry for is Marcell :-(

  • Is this selection going to step up the pace of player exodus. Is HM the engineer of the end of SA rugby? If you play at world class standards and still don’t make your national squad why stay? Japan and Europe pay bags full of cash and if you will never taste world cup glory what have you got to lose? Curry Cup fame? A dying super rugby series controlled by new Zealand and Australia through sanzar? You only have so many years in this game might as well start building on your french or English citizenship early. Isn’t that going to be on players minds?

He had to pick Alberts, because for the half a game he will get out of him Big Willem is just that good. With Vermullen also being suspect, neck injuries being just that harder to recover from,He stuoidly chose to cover both with P.S,DT.
That way he also covers not only no8 but also Mattfield.
His choice was 2 of Burger,PSDT and Marcel. As usual he made the wrong choice.Basically Marcel lost out because his father and grandfather were not Boks.
Koilisi deserves a shot, but it should have been at Burger’s expense not Marcells.

  • Everyone is going on about how HM and his selection is useless and we’ll never get past the quarter finals…

Look, I don’t think we’ll get past the quarters either, but I don’t think there is anyone that has been left out of the squad that could necessarily have changed that outcome…

Interestingly, other than in 1995 (a heck of a long time ago!)… We have never beaten Australia or New Zealand in a World Cup… So the odds of us getting to the final are statistically extremely slim in anycase.

So my suggestion, is for everyone to adjust their expectations now to avoid even further angst later… History is just simply not on our side people, it doesn’t matter who is in the squad!

I fully expect our boys to go out in the Quarters, and if they get further then I’ll be extemely impressed… But regardless of when the Boks exit the World Cup… I’m not going to let that detract from an excellent festival of rugby… With the best teams on display week after week for nearly two months… Can’t wait… Roll on 18th September

  • @Ben (Comment 97) : your memory must be short because 2003 was the ultimate low. We even lost a pool game, the only time SA has ever lost a pool game. We knew before that tournament that we would not beat England in our pool and then face NZ in the quarters…

Hell I reckon 2011 was pretty low in terms of expectations and what do you know, we exited at the quarter stage too…

I think this Bok team is capable of beating England, Wales or Australia in a quarter but are unlikely to defeat NZ in a semi.

    Time will tell.

Your point might be a little more valid with a bit more history behind it… 10 or 20 or 50 encounters. Right now in a world cup turkey shoot any of SA, Aus or NZ is capable of beating each other.

  • @Orlok Tsubodai (Comment 113) : I don’t think your memory of 2007 is very accurate. Jake was called back to SA and taken to task in 2006. In 2007 we thumped England twice (scoring 50 points each time), thumped Samoa, beat Australia and narrowly lost to New Zealand at home. We then sent an understrength side to Aus and NZ and were well beaten. In the run up to the World Cup we thumped Namibia, and beat both Scotland and Wales very comfortably. At that stage we were looking good, game plan was in place, tempo was high. And then of course we won the world cup. Yes, much was favourable at that world cup in terms of how the draw panned out…but the run of results described above can hardly be called “bombing out” never mind “spectacularly”…and I just don’t understand how you can describe the Boks as “poor” in that year. 2003 yes, 2011 maybe…but certainly not 2007…

Well done Rob on the Coenie call, i thought he would miss out.
So in terms of a match 15:
Beast,Bissie,Jannie,Etzebeth, Matfield,Louw, Alberts, Vermuelen, DuPreez,Lambie, Habana, DeVilliers,De Allende, Pieterson, LeRoux
    Bench:
Nyahane, Strauss, Oosthuizen, PSDT, Burger, Pienaar, Pollard, Kriel

That assumes that all are fit as we are told.

I think the consensus was that with Pollard current form the boks had a better chance with Lambie. Not that we would win every game because of him, those were your words not ours. Why are you still stuck on that though? The squad is picked, it’s done. Whether HM will use the right tool for the job is now entirely up to his skill as a coach. Personally I still think he will make some poor decisions on key moments if his decision making track record so far is anything to go by.

  • @JD (Comment 146) : Yup there’s only one coach who does that….Say whatever you will of HM selections but the man at least puts in effort when it comes to coaching and most of the time even pays attention while practice sessions are running.

  • @JD (Comment 144) : There is a list, its just not publicised as it will depend who is injured and where the shortfalls are

  • @Seth101 (Comment 118) :

True…but in this instance, person Y is endeavouring to improve his lot and is doing so at great personal risk, while person X just complains.

It seems that either his situation is not as bad as he likes to pretend or he does not have the gumption to do something about it.

    Which is it?

  • @fyndraai (Comment 151) : Because complaining and trying to improve the situation have to be mutually exclusive?

  • @JD (Comment 150) : Reason they havnt published a list is so that they can have pretty much free reign to pick anyone depending on the needs at the time. If they published a list people would ask why is so and so not on the list and are the numbers correct and blah blah. This way if someone gets injured they can call up whoever they like. Remember Chester Williams scored 4 tries in the 1995 quarter final but wasnt part of the squad initally chosen for the tournament…
