The Sharks were forced to dig deep to record a 24-20 win against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth this evening.

The hosts dominated the early scoring, running up a 13-0 lead as half time approached. An early blunder from Lionel Cronje in his 22 gifted a try to Kings flanker Thembalani Bholi 7 minutes into the contest, while Scott van Breda added the extras via a conversion and two penalties. Despite clear territorial superiority and the lions’ share of the possession, the Sharks simply could not find a way through, not even when the Kings were reduced to 14 men for ten minutes.

It fell to Joe Pietersen – one of very few men in black and white to look at all interested in the first half – to right matters, straightening beautifully to score inside Luther Obi’s weak tackle attempt just before halt time. Pietersen converted his own try to narrow the deficit to 6 at half time.

It was a different Sharks outfit that came out of the tunnel for the second half, with replacement Thomas du toit in the van of all of the good upfront work that followed. As the Sharks kept it simple and direct (and away from the bumbling Cronje as much as possible) the Kings started to fall off tackles. First Francois Kleinhans – another who was superb on the day – scored a great try off the back of a lineout drive, captain Marco Wentzel propelling him over after the pair peeled off. Minuets later, it was Daniel du Preez who scored his third try in four games, showing impressive strength to dot down after being stopped a metre or two short.

With the Sharks cruising at 21-13 up, Gary Gold inexplicably subbed both du Preez and Michael Claassens, both of whom had been instrumental in the good play up to that point. With the bonus point looming, it again became a horror show and despite a penalty from Pietersen to add just a bit more of a buffer, the Sharks found themselves holding on for dear life in the final ten minutes, as the Kings profited from their mistakes. S’bura Sithole went in high to stop Ronnie Cooke scoring five minute from time and paid the price, with a penalty try awarded to the hosts and the Sharks wing – poor on the day – shown a yellow card.

Fortunately, no further damage was done and the Sharks held on for a four-point win that really should have been more.

EP Kings (20): Try Bholi, Penalty Try. Converions van Breda (2). Penalties van Breda (2).
Sharks (24): Tries Pietersen, Kleinhans, D du Preez. Converions Pietersen (3). Penalty Pietersen.

  • Cronje should hang his head in shame. Nothing about that performance was up to scratch. Joe Petersen finished off the first try and made the conversions. The only substitution that Gold got right was bringing Tomas due Toit on. Van Heerden seems to have taken a dislike to Claassens on the day. Hadebe made his throws as did Cooper. It seems they’ve been working hard at some things in the week. Decision making was not great by some of the team. But they won and it’s something to build on

  • @pastorshark (Comment 10) : Some forwards not all. They took the ball away at breakdowns almost at will. They forced so many turnovers when we couldn’t produce the ball they outscrummed us many times. Line outs we were better so not really much better. Individuals such as kleinhans and du preez seem to improve. Our hooker doing well on line out but otherwise quite anonymous. In our backline Cronje is erratic Ungerer still not on the right track but the rest are ok just need some quality from forwards

  • I can’t believe the Sharks let Fred go but kept Cronje. Chadwick is back to his old useless self again, Tom was a monster when he came on. Kleinhans starting to show the promise he did as a youngster. And Dan du Preez, phew, that boy is going to be a legend. Claasens and Joe have been excellent buys for us. Although I feel for Claasens, coming from a team where he played next to players like Wilkinson to playing next to a plonker like Cronje. Think he and Lambie will make a killer combo. The one improvement that I did notice, was that our defence close to the ruck seemed much better than in the previous games, lets hope that can continue as that is where both the Pumas and Lions murdered us. The scrums need to be sorted and quick also, let’s hope Adriaanse gets fit soon.

  • Methinks Gold will opt for continuity and play pretty much the same team against the Pumas (it didn’t look like there were injuries), however Lionel Cronje needs to be in a position where he causes no damage for around 60 minutes, and its risky yes but perhaps Garth April could start with Heimar and Jordaan at centre, and Tomas and Kyle in the front row. Two wins so far (and the margins involved) do not make the savvy Sharks fan very confident. How relieved did Wentzel look in the post-match interview! He was just about beside himself. The team looks like they don’t believe they can actually do it though (lots of self doubt…too scared to have a go…forcing passes…getting rid of the ball like it just farted…); we’re in a hole and I don’t think Wentzel going to have two more happy post-match interviews in a row. In fact, it might be a tough month. How I would loved to be proven wrong though

cronje puzzled me, his been everywhere, cheetahs as a youngster, stormers, bulls, lions, brumbies, and now at our team and his never reached a high level

would have kept swiel at this rate

ungerer had a good SR and is struggling in CC thanks to the average play around him

nice to see JC on the bench covering lock, the ozzy has looked average thus far

this is going to be a long season

DD has been a beast at flank yes, now for his bro JLD to step up too

  • Hmm where to start…we got the win somehow after trying our best to lose.
Yes Cronje had a bad game, but it happens and he has been pretty decent this year. (Im not sad to see Zeilinga go as he was awful in a sharks shirt in many many games.) Ungerer not good enough im afraid if his name was Hoffman we would be calling for a public hanging. 1 thing i noticed our backline doing technically wrong is that as soon as they catch the ball (well hopefully catch) they immediately turn their shoulders to the touchline and look to pass, this means that they dont fix any defenders and the defense can easily shift and just smash the guy on the end- how many time has our wing been smashed into touch or a last dodgey pass made under pressure just goes out? Our lineouts were good but our scrums a big concern same goes for our mauls. I just feel we arent doing ourselves any favours playing Hadebe…i kno i keep having a go at the guy and yes he did throw in a lot better so glad he has worked on that but i just feel he is too heavy and doesnt offer the necessary grunt in the scrums, mauls and ball carrying as a Cooper or Marais would. We also have fairly weak scrumming locks which doesnt aide our under pressure scrum- trust me the locks make a massive difference.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 19) : Fred was a peculiar case and it looks like he needed the change to get his own views and ideas sorted.

We now have an issue with Reinach back as I am sure rhe reconning was to not have him, so the Ungerer situation becomes more complex. As long as everyone is open and honest, he can be manged well. From all reports that is what GG and BV is supposed to be excellent at, but no real signs of this so far unfortunately.

We are goimg to lose another scrummie. Reinach, Claasens, Ungerer ans Venter are too much, or someome will need to become a utility player
Reinach probably the most likely to succeed as utility

Bigger issue is the other pivot. Cronje is dishing up free tries every game since the Tahs and his unpredictable good stuff does not outweigh these shockers. Either Joe P needs to be shifted or giving Inny a game?

Fred Zeilinga got injured and was out the entire season that Jake White coached the Sharks.

When Lambie got injured he was started the next game against the Lions and got injured (after looking quite sharp) in the first 30 min. He was already on the list of players that would have toured, but then picked up a long term injury in training.

I always rated Zeilinga and was very disappointed to hear of his departure. He never got the same opportunities Ungerer has. I have not seen anything from Ungerer to feel we would be disappointed to let him go.

His poor passing cannot be blamed on the players around him.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 20) :

I doubt that Zeilinga ever got 3 starts in a row for the Sharks. He is still only 22. He is a talent player and was treated poorly by the Sharks, with Tim Swiel, Frans Steyn and the Lionel Cronje preferred ahead of him, when Lambie was injured.

I believe at some point you will change your mind and wish we had hung onto him. I always lauded his potential.

Ungerer on the other hand, has had plenty of chances and the issues with his passing was evident from the first time I saw him and has persisted every game since. In my opinion we would do good to relegate him from the match-day 22 to give another youngster (hanco venter) a fair shot.

Sometimes a change of scenery does wonders for a guy as they become stale and pick up bad habits which they cant shake. For me Zeilinga isnt a loss, im not saying Cronje perfect but id rather have someone other than Zeilinga at the moment. Ungerer needs to improve his passing, if we keep accommodating him he will cost us matches…almost did on Saturday.

  • In the first half, the Sharks didn’t use their forwards once to bash it up a bit. Almost every ball went straight to the wing. I’m all for exciting running rugby, but you have to include your forwards. The second half we started using our forwards a bit and things improved.

Hadebe is our weakness in the scrums. As soon as Cooper came on, the very next scrum we looked much more solid and that continued for the rest of the game.

I’m also worried about our backline’s inability to run straight. Man they look so impotent on attack with their angled running and spreading the ball to the touchline. I don’t think we created an overlap once!

It’s happened a few times now where exciting x-factor players under-perform at the Sharks, then they leave the club, and become superstars at their new teams and play to the potential we saw glimpses of when they were at the Sharks. What is it about the Sharks, that we make these brilliant players look so average? Gameplan? Coaching? Culture?

Bring on Reinarch with his maverick style and we could be deep in the shite.
He confuses himself most of the time, and yes he often gets it right but then it is an individual effort and never as part of the team.

  • @The hound (Comment 57) : So what you are saying is Du Preez adds the same grunt as Alberts Deysel?

Kleinhans the same as Coetzee? come now boet, we are lacking in that department, will the Dup brothers get there?? of course they still kids.

Imagine how good this guy will be when Gold lets him play a whole game.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 63) : Vorster would be a good buy. Fisher should only come back once we have a coach who can grow aspirant players. For now only confident and consistent guys can be included since Gold cannot transform players.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 41) : They unfortunately need to rely on guys that have natural ability at 9 and 10 cause the coaching isn’t going to save them. The flow at 9, 10 and 12 is not smooth. Our 13 therefore looks useless. Easy on blaming Mjekevu cause Jordaan is also battling at 13. The way things are going I would even accept Jimmy Stonehouse as coach.

  • Ja currently it looks like the raw talent guys and previously advantaged (having come from a good club overseas or having years of experience) are the guys who will step up. Unfortunately those who Need good coaching to lift their games are Plum out of luck.

Backline has not clicked all year although the ability is there in the players. Cronje has not been dictating or been consistent, he remains an enigma. Imagine a side with Cronje, Willie and SP in… Brilliance mixed with major horror shows

  • @pastorshark (Comment 75) : don’t know as I did not watch most of the second half. If Cooper is fit he should start most of the remaining games.
Scrummaging is a lot more these days than 1-5 pushing. Check the positioning of the loossies at scrum time as they add another 300kg to the pack. Sharks pack needs to practice and gel as a unit before things will get better.
Marco can’t be dropped as he is the general at line outs and without him I’m not sure we will get a lot of line out balls!!!

  • @pastorshark (Comment 81) : ja I’m not sure that Cooper is all that strong scrummager but ja think he’s better than Monde.
Must say I do think it’s more important for the Sharks scrum that all 8 players gel and scrum as one than to replace the hooker, as that would make a way bigger difference.
