What they had to say: Sharks vs EP Kings, Round 4

Hi Sharks fans. What a let down of a Bok Squad announcement. Poor Xola Ntshinga had to keep asking the ‘crowd’ to applaud the players and the whole affair was somewhat of an anti-climax. I won’t get into player selection as that’s been discussed at length elsewhere. All I will say is that I feel for Marcell Coetzee and I hope he is the first player called up when injury strikes.

In other news, congratulations to formers Sharks age group star, Nanyak Dala, formerly of Glenwood High School, for making the Canada Squad to play at his second Rugby World Cup, having featured at flank, centre and wing for Canada at the last World Cup.

Media:

“The Kings’ scrum dominance continued, with the Sharks’ inexperienced front row under serious pressure and despite being a man down they managed to stretch their lead to 13-0 from another Van Breda penalty following a vital turnover from Bholi. The Sharks turned down an opportunity to kick at goal late in the first half and it paid off as Joe Pietersen scored in the corner to finally open their account.” – rugby365.com

“The Sharks produced a strong second half performance to defeat the EP Kings 24-20 in their Absa Currie Cup Premier Division match at the Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.” – news24.com

“It was a crucial win for the Sharks, who came into the game with two losses and just one win from the start of their campaign, but their poor form remains a cause for concern.” – sarugbymag.com

“In similar fashion to the clash between these sides at Kings Park a fortnight ago, the game still hung in the balance deep into the second-half but a strong final quarter from the Sharks saw them over the line. The result is the Sharks’ second victory of the season and takes them up to fifth place in the standings while the winless Kings remain second last.” – planetrugby.com

“However, the Kings never stopped fighting and a brilliant backline move saw centre Ronnie Cooke heading for the corner before a high tackle by Sibusiso Sithole stopped him just short of the tryline. That resulted in a yellow card and a penalty try, and suddenly the Kings were back in it at 24-20 with five minutes remaining. The Sharks, though, fought their way back into the Kings’ half and had two penalty chances to seal the match, but failed to take them. Finally getting their hands on the ball, the Kings launched a desperate attack from their own tryline, but it came unstuck on the halfway line with the final hooter having already blown.” – rugby15.co.za

“The Sharks beat the Kings 33-25 in Durban two weeks ago but were under the cosh in the first half in the return leg. But an undoubted tongue-lashing from coach Gary Gold at the break saw the Sharks emerge a different side in the second period. They dominated the majority of the second half to clinch a deserved victory, only their second of the season.”

Twitter:

“#CurrieCup At times not very pretty, but good to get the win. Safe travels back home @TheSharksZA @GaryGoldrugbyiq #SharksRugby #SSRugby”

“#CurrieCup Dan du Preez is an immense talent. A good try #SharksRugby #SSRugby”

“No 7- Bholi #EPKings is a great player”

“Awesome to see @TheSharksZA beat the #EPKings in PE. #KINvSHA”

  • Sorry to say hut with Dale at 1/our scrum will keep on going backwards!!!! I’m no expert in flyhalf play but for me Cronje is also way to far back to get our backs going!!!! Time for a change at 1 and 10!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 7) : ya maybe they should consider giving joe a shot at flyhalf and garth fullback or vice versa we could be more potent, but cronje just aint working at the moment.

  • But my word…whoever the marketing person was behind that dogshow of a team announcement…well, they deserve to be fired! Boring, amateur, no atmosphere!! Just embarrassingly bad…

  • @Stiko85 (Comment 9) : injury to SP came at a bad time as he would have been the logical choice at 15. Maybe give Odwa a go at 15 with Sithole and another youngster on the wings?

  • @JD (Comment 15) : Imagine it as bad as you possibly can…and it was probably a bit worse!! I was at a Confirmation Weekend with four Confirmands and our families…and we had just come back from a game drive and watched it on catchup…oh my word! We were all groaning about just how bad it was. I hope the farewell was lovely!

  • @The Great Couch Shark (Comment 18) : @Stiko85 (Comment 19) : ja must say I’m glad he’s with the Sharks. For me he’s one of the most under rated players in SA and should have had a lot of caps for the Bokke.

He should have played for the Boks.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 27) : The kings business plan was to start of strong by buying mercenaries making a huge impression and gaining lots of investment. Only they didn’t start strong and have failed season after season to make an impression. Attrition and changes in the landscape and now it seems almost like a sinking ship. They should be wary of contract breach else they might find themselves without talent in a very short space of time. At the risk of sounding like a vulture there are some men we should be trying to get. Sykes, Akker Giant to mention a few.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 31) : Ja look I hope it doesn’t sink. We do need a good EP side and even though we would benefit from player surplus we don’t always get to play all those guys and end up losing them. So it’s better we have another union that can play them. Sharks should strengthen ties with our cousins at EP ensure we get to play all our talent even if on loan.

Without cash they will not attract quality new players and could even lose a lot of their under 19 team that’s doing so well.
