Reinach joins Sharks Currie Cup squad

Springbok scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, who was informed last week that he would not be part of Heyneke Meyer’s 31-man squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, has rejoined the Sharks and will be available for selection for this weekend’s Currie Cup match against the Pumas.

Reinach, who made his Bok debut off the bench against Australia in last year’s Rugby Championship has featured in every match 23 named since, starting three tests on the end of year tour and featuring as substitute in seven others. As such, one would think that the 25-year-old would have had a legitimate expectation of World Cup action; Meyer’s decision to back a scrumhalf that has played no rugby at all in six months (in Fourie du Preez) and bring in uncapped Rudy Paige instead must have been rather galling for Reinach, but he’ll have the opportunity to finally get some decent rugby under his belt with the Sharks.

Reinach, I’m sure, must also realise that there’s a pretty good chance of du Preez breaking down at some stage during the tournament. Cotton-wool wrapping, after all, is not the best way of preparing a player for the rigours of World Cup rugby.

Other disappointed Sharks players include Marcell Coetzee and Frans Steyn. Messages are mixed regarding Coetzee’s state of fitness; I was led to believe that his knee injury would not have healed in time to be selected for the first pool game and that factor weighed heavily against his inclusion. Regardless of whether he is fit or not, though, the fact remains that Meyer has picked other loose forwards (some of them also injured) ahead of him. It’s unlikely that Coetzee, whenever fit, will play Currie cup since he has signed a deal with the Honda Heat in Japan and I’m pretty sure they’d have first call on his services.

Frans Steyn has signed with Jake White’s Montpellier and will presumably head to France as soon as fit.

  • What happens in the case of a player joining his Japanese club and then receiving a call up.

Is he then allowed to leave the club again?

  • Glad to have Cobus in the CC team, would have been great to have Marcell & Frans too. Then again the youngsters need to stand up if they really want that golden cup.

  • Welcome back Cobus.

Geez but Meyers scrumhalf selections are particularly galling.

I feel for the other guy, Venter. This was also his Currie Cup to make name for himself.

Now, I am loving the rugby played by Claassens, and I am sure Reinach will now become first choice, but it has hampered our development. Surely, if not both, at least one of Venter or Ungerer will start looking elsewhere..

  • Never been a Reinarch fan,I find him far to disruptive in a position that firstly demand stability.
I felt last week that for the first time since Kockert left we had that position nailed down.
Claassens is the business and if anyone should be feeling aggrieved about not making the Bok team it is him.
Funny how Meyer persevered with Louw and ignored this guy

  • I also feel Claasens is a better scrumhalf in terms of focusing on his service. Reinach tends to nullify his flyhalfs effectiveness and take matters in his own hands with far too many negative effects. But that being said he has a huge amount of talent and no coach will not want to use him as often as possible. Plus we must give Claasens some rotation at some point.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : I’ve always rated Ungerer, but he’s in some kind of funk currently…not sure whether he’s been complacent as he thought his CC position was a given, or whether he is intimidated by Claasen’s class, or whether he thinks CC rugby requires less effort.

Hanco would be wise to find another team, as he won’t get a shot at CC rugby now…Sharks should loan him to the Kwas.

I’ve always been a fan of the loan system, it is a shame this isn’t done with any effectiveness, especially given the lob-sided squad sizes if comparing Top Unions to other Unions..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 11) : Adopt-a-union…would surely improve the state of our national rugby (maybe an adopt-a-coach program where low level coaches get to sit-in with the coaching teams of the top unions).

That would surely lay the foundation for a unified style of rugby – slowly grouping teams together.

It would surely work better at CC level than it ever did at SR level.

  • Reinach and Claasens would def be a good combo irrespective who starts or who comes off the bench. Just feel that Ungerer in combo with a shaky Cronje wasnt helping out cause much. Tough thing tho is getting guys outside the main squad back into form as club rugby has now finished so only game time is through the CC itself.
