Bok discard Vincent Koch starts at tighthead prop for the Pumas as they take on the Sharks at Kings Park this weekend.

The blonde 25-year-old, who was actually born in Empangeni in KZN, rose to prominence in a strong Pumas pack last year, securing a Super Rugby gig with the Stormers on the back of which he earned a Bok call up for the Rugby Championship. Like the Sharks’ Cobus Reinach, Koch will feel he has a point to prove after being left out of Heyneke Meyer’s 31-man Rugby World Cup squad, which is bad news for a Sharks pack already struggling at scrum time.

The Pumas recorded a surprisingly comfortable victory over the Sharks in Nelspruit earlier in the season, built in no small part on a strong performance from their pack in the set piece. With Koch back in the mix, they will present an even more formidable challenge this weekend.

Pumas: 15 JW Bell; 14 Trompie Pretorius, 13 Hoffmann Maritz, 12 Stefan Watermeyer (capt), 11 Rosko Speckman; 10 JC Roos, 9 Faf de Klerk; 8 Jason Fraser, 7 Uzair Cassiem, 6 Jaco Bouwer, 5 Marius Coetzer, 4 Rudi Mathee, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Jacques Momberg, 1 Corné Fourie.
Reserves: 16 Swys de Toit, 17 Dee-Jay Terblanche, 18 Giant Mtyanda, 19 Marnus Schoeman, 20 Reynier van Rooyen, 21 Justin van Staden, 22 Bernado Botha.

  • Giant on the bench? Send him over to the Sharks. He can start every week.

  • I’m sorry mate, you cant call a team with the likes of Trompie, Giant, Rosko and Dee-jay a formidable challenge… ;-)

  • So instead of awarding scums he may just as well award penalties to the Pumas?!?!?! Poor Reinach not going to get any decent scum balls!!!!!!!!!!

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 2) : It’s all relative but rub it in by all means :) . If you support the Sharks then even the Kings pose a challenge this season.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : Yup, we in for a very very tough time in the scrums…can see a good few penalties resulting from which they will either kick for poles or lineout and then drive. Dont drop the ball sharks or it will cost u 3 or 7pts.

  • The Lions already have so many centres to pick from for Super Rugby, can’t we have Stefan Watermeyer if they are going to keep Mnisi, Voster, Stokkies and Mapoe?

I rate our center stocks as potentially talent, but for some reason slow to materialize – Heimar/Andre/Paul/Sithole. I prefer all of the above players. Like I said, not that I don’t see the potential and with a struggling pack and bad service I get that nothing is really happening, but right now the Lions guys just look better.

  • I will be keen to see just how good Giant is,good yard stick to measure him ,no pun intended, is against Wentzel.Or maybe they are both crap.

  • @The hound (Comment 8) : I think they both not top level but also provide different functions. Wentzel more lineout prowess and passes the ball a lot if received in general play. Giant more of a scrumming/mauling lock and will be used to carry the ball to generate momentum or clear rucks.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 9) : Agree that is what is missing in this Sharks team,we have always had a mongrel lock, short on technique but with a massive heart, think Slugger Slade,Atherton,Sykes,Bressler,go all the way back to Vleis.

  • @The hound (Comment 10) : Yup, serious lack of a large man that just puts his head down and grafts in the scrums and rucks. We have pretty decent loose forwards coming through but a serious shortage of locks- i think Wenzel is older than Matfield so ya. Lewies seems very injury prone, Oosthuizen cant catch a cold, Astle is so light the wind clears him from a ruck. Sharks should throw some Rands at that Jason Jenkins kid and a couple more. Or get the Marais brothers back from playing mess around rugby in France (although thats unlikely)

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : Who is Jenkins is he that long haired lock who played for the Baby Boks,I think he is on the bench for the Bulls,if so he is the real deal.

  • @The hound (Comment 20) : No different guy. Jenkins played SAu20 this year. But that blonde haired kid on Bulls bench is good too. @robdylan (Comment 19) : Which makes his signing a bit silly as the Bulls already have young locks in the side excluding Jenkins…pity
