Claassens, Ndungane not on long-term injured list

Sharks coach Gary Gold confirmed at a press conference yesterday that both scrumhalf Michael Claassens and winger Odwa Ndungane would have been available to play this week if needed, but have been stood down as a precautionary measure.

Claasens suffered a lower back contusion, while Ndungane picked up a similar injury to his rib. According to Gold, both could have played if it had been a crunch game, but given that he feels he has adequate cover in both positions, the wisest course of action is to give them a week off to allow the bruises to heal.

He also revealed that his philosophy is that returning Boks should consider themselves automatic first-choice players, hence Cobus Reinach’s immediate elevation to the starting lineup ahead of Stefan Ungerer, who remains on the bench. Gold and the other coaches are hoping for an 80-minute performance this week, something that has eluded the team thus far in the 2015 Currie Cup.

Khaya Majola (knee), SP Marais (knee/ankle), Wiehan Hay (groin), Jean Deysel (tricep) and Lourens Adriaanse (shoulder) all remain on the injured list.

That sets a dangerous precedent, doesn’t it?

Fuck me but this guy can talk a load of rubbish..

Why would he say something like that? It automatically puts the other players in a negative mindset..

So does this mean that Cobus will start every one of the next 10 matches, no matter his form? So much for player development.

    Get out now Ungerer/Venter…

  • So thought for the day…Gary Glitter isnt the flavour of the month in Durbs…so how about we trade him in and get the sharks fan favourite Heyneke Meyer who although apparently has a deal but will most likely get the ‘dont come monday’ speech after the world cup…

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : @robdylan (Comment 2) : well let’s see if they’re picked for the Bokke ahead of the other players at the Sharks that should mean that they are better players than the others that remained at the Sharks so it would make sense to pick them as soon as they’re available? Did I miss something??????
Saying Claassens and Odwa would have played if this was a crunch match is way worse as all the remaining games are crunch games!!!!!

    Oh, wait….

  • The problem for me is that reading anything Gold says really gets my back up. The same way 2nd hand car salesmen and recruitment consultants get my back up.

He is simply unlikeable and when you add in to the mix that he fails spectacularly as a coach or director of rugby I begin to wonder why (1) he was given the job at all and (2) why he is still kept around.

I mean seriously, I had more respect and goodwill for the likes of Kevin Putt and Hugh Reece-Edwards as coach of the Sharks and they were diabolical.

Can the union please appoint a spokesperson to speak in Gold’s place?

….why not just get a proper coach (even though most around here sees the Sharks as some second rate team that should consider itself lucky for even having a head coach  ), and get PdV to write his pre- and post-match speeches. ;-)

Then again, by the sound of things, Gold might actually have been responsible for most of PdV’s comments.

We have a dor who’s coaching, and we have a ceo who’s trying to be dor….both should stick to doing what they were appointed to do (and that should start with our revered CEO) :|
