What they had to say: Sharks vs Pumas, Round 5

Hi Sharks fans. I can’t say it was convincing, but a win is a win. I had some friends around for the rugby on Saturday and the one guy remarked that he’d prefer we hit rock bottom and lose, just so that there will be changes to coaches, etc. Just interesting to get an independent view.

Media:

“The Sharks showed great composure to eke out a win, but they will have to improve markedly if they are to mount a serious challenge for the title.” – news24.com

“The home side remained patient and took the ball through the phases as they worked their way up the field. Jordaan came to within inches of getting his second try of the match but quick thinking by Mjekevu saw the wing grab his brace. Pietersen made no mistake with the conversion to reduce the deficit to just two points with nine minutes remaining.” – rugby365.com

“Winger Wandile Mjekevu played an integral part in the Cell C Sharks’ 27-26 victory over the Steval Pumas in the sides’ Absa Currie Cup encounter at Growthpoint Kings Park on Saturday afternoon in Durban. Mjekevu not only contributed 10 points via two tries, but also forced a penalty late in the game to help give the Sharks the victory.” – supersport.com

“It wasn’t plain saling and the result was in the balance until its closing stages when a late penalty from Joe Pietersen clinched victory for the home side. The Sharks outscored the visitors by three tries to two as both sides showed a willingness to run the ball which made for an entertaining spectacle. The home side lost their way midway through the second half when they committed too many unforced errors – especially at the breakdowns – but they showed plenty of character to launch a fightback during the game’s latter stages.” – planetrugby.com

“The Sharks failed to show appreciation for possession in the first half, while their lineout went awry in the second stanza, but they displayed impressive character to score 10 unanswered points late in the game. In the opening round of the competition, the Pumas clinched a surprise win over the Sharks and at various times during Saturday’s encounter it looked as if they might secure a third successive win over the Durban-based side. A late drop-goal attempt from Pumas replacement Justin van Staden was charged down after the final hooter, ultimately allowing the home side to hold on for an important but unconvincing victory.” – sarugbymag.co.za

Twitter:

“#RugbyDrinkingGame Down a shot every time Andy mentions a players old school @SuperSportTV #CurrieCup #SharksVPumas”

“@JohnSmit123 if you are talking about #sharksvpumas then I agree.Do something plz.we won’t win super rugby with that kind of play”

“Esterhuizen should just take all the kicks. He’s twice the player useless Lionel Cronje is. #SSRugby #SharksVsPumas”

  • I still haven’t seen the match, just the odd 5 min highlight package. I am glad to see Mjekevu looked a lot better on the wing than he did at centre…told you so!

  • @pastorshark (Comment 1) : My pleasure.

@vanmartin (Comment 2) : @pastorshark (Comment 3) : Mjekevu looked much better on the wing, although I was screaming at my tv when he didn’t pass back inside to Reinach after a great break and instead got bundled into touch. That was selfish play.

  • @JarsonX (Comment 6) : Yip, will have to improve significantly up front. Sad to admit but Chadwick and Cooper seems to have regressed to vodacom cup level. Cronje also seems to have gone backwards again seems to prove his previous provinces right in having let him go. Jeez he was class at u21 but has no consistency and is costing the team more than what he produces.

Either Joe or Inny has to move to 10

  • @vanmartin (Comment 2) : That was more due to the Pumas messing up the opportunity to win the match with a drop kick through impatience than anything else.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) : Faf should have taken the ball up when he dummied and not then passed the ball.

  • Wandile scored tries but geez in general play he was aweful especially catching and passing reminds me of a jp petersen in 2007 super rugby competition.

  • @StevieS (Comment 11) : Geez but that Faf is a Fiffie behind the scrum, continuously nagging and bitching and doing the hands in the air thing.Good player though.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 18) : I’ve seen that as well. A guy I know who played with him said he is very arrogant. Can’t deny his talent though.

  • @Poisy (Comment 14) : Backline play was terrible in general. Number of passes from Jordaan (I think) also ended behind the next player.

@benji (Comment 24) : You mean Faf? I thought CR was also pretty good on the day. Better than I thought he’d be after the disappointment of missing out on the WC.
