Pink ribbons and green armbands a poor subsitute

I note, with a sort of bitter-sweet emotion, that the Sharks will run out in a special jersey this weekend to commemorate 125 years of a proud tradition of rugby in the KwaZulu Natal province. As a passionate fan for all but the first 100 of those years, I have one very simple request to make to the team.

Play some rugby this weekend that honours that legacy.

Speaking as the voice of the average Sharks fan (I pray you’ll permit me that luxury), I can only air my frustration and deep sadness at the fare dished up by the Sharks class of 2015. There have been some very low patches in our history indeed, since that bright day 25 years ago when we announced ourselves as a serious force on the local landscape in winning our maiden Currie Cup. The “team of the 90s” went through a pretty dire slump in the latter half of that decade indeed, only to recover amazingly to appear in three successive finals around the turn of the millennium. Kevin Putt’s era, unfortunately, signalled a return to the doldrums and we as Sharks fans, having tasted the lows as well as the highs, rightly said “never again” after Dick Muir and John Plumtree restored our pride.

2015′s Sharks are not delivering results and performances at the level their fans expect. We have had to sit through a shocking 50-point drubbing against the Crusaders in Super Rugby (in a special “organ donation” jersey), watch as a proud 8-year undefeated record against the Lions tumbled (with pink ribbons on the sleeve) and grit our teeth as the team struggled to record a scrappy victory over the Pumas (in green armbands, the significance of which I have already forgotten) – in the process narrowly avoiding becoming the first Sharks team in goodness knows how long to lose at home to these minnows. We have un-grudgingly got behind each new marketing campaign and social responsibility drive, sent our SMS’es, made our donations, bought our commemorative t-shirts, changed the colour of our website. Hell, the latest (ongoing) campaign encourages fans to send messages of support and goodwill to the players ahead of each match, just in case they might have to face up to the fact that they’re disappointing their fans.

At what point, dare I ask, can we expect some payback? Could it be this week, Sharks, that you put aside whatever is troubling you and simply go out and play this game the way you know how to play it? Could we ask that when you don yet another special jersey – one that celebrates all that is special about Kwazulu-Natal rugby – you give us an 80-minute performance that does justice to those giants on whose shoulder you now stand?

It’s not unreasonable to expect at least that, is it?

  • Good article
The thing I liked most about the young Mike Tyson is that he left the change room in a pair of black boxing shorts and black boots ,nothing else not even socks .This was his response to the circus that boxing had become. He came to fight and not act.
Seems its time the Sharks got a bit of that attitude, every game is about another bleeding hearted side show.We need to get back to being about rugby

  • Mayb the jersey is super distracting to the opposition and they arent able to focus and catch or defend? I reckon the sharks flashers should be kept on the side of the field as another distraction to the opposition. And as a last resort mayb Smitty can run the touch line? Or send up those fireworks just before the opposition score and mayb they drop the ball? Just ideas here

The Sharks seem to be at a Cell C store somewhere signing autographs every second day, I understand that it’s part of sponsorship, but they are rugby players at the end of the day and need to do their job.

  • The biggest mistake the Sharks did when JS took over was to break down every single pillar of strength the Sharks had and tried to reinvent it into something strangely possibly to what the Sharks apparently have been needing to win a trophy. Yet taking the club back into time. What is apparent to me from day one is that JS needs to go and doesn’t have a clue what he has been doing.

Secondly these youngster who bemoaned Plum/White for never selecting them needs to darn well stand up now and show what they have. My feeling is that Plum/white always saw those youngsters were never up to scratch, hence never selecting them. The youth who revolted have some shoes to fill, and need to pretty soon!

  • @Seth101 (Comment 9) : What comes to mind is when JW said be at training at 8am and the players bitched like little girls. The whole attitude at the Sharks stinks at the moment. In fact “the whole Sharks way” stinks. If you don’t want to work hard and be the best then move out and get someone who is willing to do that.

  • @Caratacus (Comment 14) : I think this should have been in the pipeline long ago, take E Jones for example. The WC is one thing but to say there will be an abundance of coaches available is taking a long shot, who is actually willing to move and who is actually a good enough coach to come to the Sharks? Lets say for arguments sake NZ and Aus play in the final, who will be available form those left over countries to come work for the Sharks? I cant think of one coach who is good enough to come. There are well enough coaches who aren’t coaching international teams who I think may fit the Sharks profile allot better.

These guys need to know what it feels like to be part of a winning Sharks team.

As for coach, I don’t think any SA coach presently has what it takes to win Super Rugby, barring White and Mallet but Whiye has come and was dumped and Mallet is not interested in any role anywhere.

  • The coach should be more important than any player and the union should see it this way too. The minute you start empowering the players over the coach your team is doomed and we have that.

And where did kowtowing to those “senior” players get this union? Most just buggered off for a bigger pay cheque. Exactly why a union must back its coach over any player.

Alex Ferguson and Man U knew this…

  • What really irritates me though is the fact that the coaches allow all this side-bullshit to take place when the one thing that should be focused on (the rugby in case you were wondering) gets left by the wayside.

The players should be having extra sessions to up their fitness and get their basics right. That is what the supporters want to see, rather than having them sign autographs at the mall.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 33) : I’m the one talking rubbish, read some of your crud again. How can a defeat be good for a young team, only in a very warped mind.
This is not a bad team,as I said some of the best youngsters in rugby. What is missing is self belief and , what is prevalent is the fear of losing. This comes from a coach very short of confidence, and a severe lack of seasoned on the field leadership.
Players like Deysel and Wentzel are not providing that leadership and guys like Peterson and Claasens are too new in the setup to have influence. What is missing here is a seasoned leader like Keegan or Botes ,even Steven Sykes.Someone who is prepared to die for the team.
But hey what do I know I talk rubbish so please enlighten me as to how a defeat for the team this Saturday will benefit anyone including you.

  • Most comments here are focused on the negative and with the Sharks playing poor rugby, I suppose it can be expected. However, I see a few signs that the team of the 90′s will be replicated in the next couple of years. In the pack, we currently have 3 exceptional players who are all only 20 years old. Thomas must give up the idea of playing tighthead and stick to loose-head, he dominated Koch and looked incredibly good. Backed up with this, you have a few quality u21 players who I feel will step up to the mark next year – J Du Toit, H Andrews, A Schramm, I Radebe and M Louw, all these guys are capable of senior rugby already and I look forward to seeing what they offer the senior side in the next year or so. If we can get a dominant and confident scrummie added to the mix, I feel this side is going to go from strength to strength – this CC is building massive confidence in certain players, namely the Doop brothers. I am confident times are going to change, sooner rather than later

  • Thanks Rob. I feel the same. I love this team and I feel guilty for not wanting to even watch them play at the moment. Everything about the Sharks just feels like a circus and seems like the powers that be are trying to convince everyone (or perhaps them selves) that all is OK! Well I don’t think all is OK as does every sharks supporter I know. So where does the problem lay?

a.) The CEO who perhaps has a more “hands on” involvement then he should?
b.) The coach who perhaps does not have the required skill set?
c.) The players who might not be the super stars we hoped or perhaps not inspired/proud to be a Sharks Player?
    d.) All of the above?

One of the biggest things that irked me this year was that there seemed to be a lack of pride among the players. They don’t look motivated and it might have been a disease they got from those senior players knowing they are moving on. I also don’t see any real leaders emerging within the team at the moment. Who will be the leaders in 2016?

There seems to be so many things not right at present that I don’t have a lot of confidence for the immediate future.

But now this is not what your post is about and I know what you are getting at. The team must rally together… realize their potential and start playing as a team. In other words if someone has a fire cracker, now is the time to light it under the Sharks backsides.

Deysel was a disaster the last time they gave it to him,and Wentzel hasn’t got another Super rugby season in him.Frans Steyn probably won’t come back.
For me a captain must come from the pack.
Of the guys coming in Coenie and Tarzan just don’t strike me as captains, neither does Marcel, there I could be wrong.
So it boils down to finding a captain from outside,my first choice would be Big Al Hargreaves if we could convince him to come home, and my ultimate it’s never going to happen choice, would beWarren Whitely.

  • @The hound (Comment 59) : @Poisy (Comment 60) : I guess it’s personal opinion, I would select him over a lot of those players, if he is as good as he was when he left. Plus leadership qualities would buy him a start. I’d got with Marcel, Keegan, van der Walt/Deysel as my starting loosies.

  • Lambie will probably captain next year with the deputy being a number of guys so depends who is playing at the time. The biggest issue facing the Sharks at the moment is their predictable game plan that is being executed very poorly at the moment. The Shaky set pieces are not helping either. The Sharks play well when they is a high tempo game plan with aggressive forwards running onto the ball and clearing rucks etc. Not sure when i last saw some aggression from a sharks pack…

  • It’s painful to see the Sharks in this apathetic state of mediocrity.

The Sharks did something big in 1990, and I became a rugby fan because of it – where has that attitude disappeared to?…

….that attitude that looked at the stats, that looked at the odds, the team that looked at the history books, and decided “today we make our own history!”.

That was the team that made me fall in love with rugby….and that is the team I no longer see in my beloved black and white.

Jonah was a crash merchant, and boy could he crash!! I recall seeing him play flank as a junior, and I said at the time, imagine that boy on the wing! Well, be careful what you wish for  Think Jonah could run over guys with more effect than Esterhuizen though.

although now look at it maybe their is a spot for him as its a long SR season and you need depth

I’ve been very disappointd with kanko for 3 seasons now. Even plum said he’d become in effective, and he was rite. Is kanko comin back

Bothma is def back for SR

lock is my main concern. We need to buy giant out right

hadebe need to prove his worth, didnt want to believe it but maybe he is part the issue at scrum time, atleast his throwing seems to have improved

our jumping and supporting in the line out has been poor

kyle cooper need to flippin throw straight

lions have three good hookers, aker, marx, coatsee. Convince one of them to come over with the promise of money, the ocean, woman and a starting spot

lastly, every day for the last 5 weeks, I thank good for Joe petersen, with out him where would we be

We have by shown anything to suggest we are really improving. And absolutely nothing suggests that we will suddenly be in the same class as the Lions this week.

Also its great that Bothma is coming for Super rugby but where does it leave guys like DuPreez x 2, Kleinhans, Majola etc? Left out for a stop gap but then we moan when they not up to it come CC time? I say sign Bothma outright. Also dont think Giant is the youngest bloke around so not his signing would be the best long term but interim def needed. Just an aside with Mouritz Botha and PSDT leaving how many locks hav gone out the Sharks door in last 5 years now? Is it more than 10 yet?

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 138) : Is Mostert still playing? He probably could have played a number of tests.

Bulls need to be looked at for a young lock as that stable has completely overstocked with Junior Bokke

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 138) : As i thought 10 locks in the last 5 yrs…and we wonder why we struggle in the scrums. Throw in say Bresler and PSDT behind our front 3 and watch the scrum difference. or if you really want to push play Mostert and Handre Marais

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 134) : to be fair to the Aussie, he’s only had a total of about 20 minutes on the field.
