Back to basics: Secure the fortress

A good friend whose opinion on rugby I value highly laid out a few home truths to me regarding the Sharks. I’ve been mulling over some of these thoughts for the past few days and feel ready to turn them into some hard advice for our struggling team – for what that’s worth.

Professional rugby is actually very simple, when it comes down to it. In order to be successful, you need to win and not winning can never be considered a good enough result. There is no such thing as “losing pretty” or “applauding the character” of a side that loses. Do that and you’re only reinforcing the message that it’s OK to lose. It really isn’t and it’s time for me to concede that, whatever else Jake White did wrong, he at least understood that fundamental concept. Talking about team culture is all well and good, but accepting defeat can very quickly become ingrained as part of a culture and at the end of that slippery slide lies the sort of mediocrity (and acceptance of mediocrity) that was as Sharks fans will never accept.

With a big test against a big foe coming up this weekend – the Pumas and EP, against whom we’ve struggled in recent weeks are not, in all fairness, the teams against which the Sharks should be comparing themselves – it’s time for the Sharks to start the process of winning back respect. With a measly 38% win record against fellow South African teams in Super Rugby this year, coupled with three home losses in six starts against said teams (including the Currie Cup game against the Lions), it’s safe to say that the hard-won crown of best team in the land has well and truly slipped and while we can chose to pat ourselves on the back when we struggle to beat the Pumas, it’s results against the likes of Western Province, the Bulls and the Lions that define how good we are as a team.

Now any coach will tell you that it’s impossible to win every game and we certainly don’t expect that, but what we do expect is that at the very least, we will find a way to win at home against the top teams. Surely “pride in the jersey” has to be a key part of our team culture and part of that pride must stem from your home ground being your fortress – a place where you simply will not countenance losing? There’s been far too much losing (and acceptance of losing) at Kings Park this season and it’s time for that to stop.

As my friend pointed out, though, the Sharks at present look like a team “looking for treasure with only half of a map” and don’t seem completely sure exactly what they are trying to achieve when they take the field. My advice is again rather simple; go back to basics. Make 90% of your tackles for 80 minutes (something we have still not managed to do this season), disrupt the opposition’s momentum and take the points that come your way. Do that and we can record a win against Western Province – a first, but crucial win, on the long road to redemption for this team.

  • I think the biggest problem this team has (apart from the coach) is that somewhere down the line they stopped believing in themselves. If the can manage to knock over the mountain goats this weekend, then it will go a long way in restoring some self confidence in the boys.

  • They must play what’s in front of them and not stick so rigidly to a gameplan. We need to see flair and passion on the field. The guys must be allowed to go out, try things and have fun.

Successful Natal teams of old were always smiling and happy and it showed in the way they played.

  • Yeh very good points Rob. As they say winning is a habit but so is losing. You speak about pride in the jersey and for me that is whats been lackingt he most. And where it is most evident is on defense. When last did you see a Sharks team have good line speed and smash the opposition back in the tackle and rucks etc? I can bet you the other teams see the Sharks as soft and if they can dominate us early on in the contact they know they have a good chance of winning. Being good on attack comprises a number of things but defense is pretty simple. Get aligned, come up as a unit and smash- simple.

  • This team is far from a family. Lots of mercs some other province journeymen etc. Biggest job would be to get these guys to bond as a unit and then build on total loyalty to the union. I recommend sharks find a way for them to spend lots more time together even socially. Maybe they should all live together like a basic training camp.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 8) : for that to work they need to room together the people that don’t get along so by the end of the camp even if they are not friends they will be some respect there which will help the team.

When I was still a sailing instructor for south african sailing(SAS) we use to do this so the teams could bond because if you just make a camp they will just stick to they already made social groups and very little interaction will happen with the others

    *John Smit moet gaan!
*Stonehouse of Deans moet hoofafrigter word en hulle moet hulle eie hulpafrigters en spellers kry en aanstel!
*Sharks moet vergeet van twak -soos pienk tuie ens ens – en rugby speel.

  • A few points to address here:

    1. To say Gold is the victim because he never wanted to coach the team is utterly ridiculous. He was happily the man in charge of the Super campaign. He accepted the responsibility to coach the Currie Cup team when nobody else was found. Does this mean he can hide behind this so-called excuse for good? Is his so-called reluctance to coach the reason why he’s not doing a proper job? I call bullshit on this victim of circumstance nonsense. Fact is, he IS the head coach. He must produce regardless.

    2. Another coaching change will supposedly be harmful? How much worse can it get? There are many examples of new coaches coming in and making rapid improvements. When you have a rotten apple, you throw it in the bin. You don’t polish it. The players clearly don’t buy into Gold. Gold has no track record of success whatsoever. Nothing to tell me has what it takes to turn the ship around. So to say Gold is a coach who should have no problem leading a team to success is obtuse. He’s never done it before.

    GOLD OUT!

    2. Firing (yet another) coach is treating the symptom and not fixing the problem.
The players didnt buy into Plumtree,McLeod-Henderson, Everitt, White or Gold?
Seems to me the problem is the players, not the coaches. Or possibly those that are appointing the coaches.

Between Plum, White, Venter and Gold they’ve won just about everythign there is to win, yet you still seem to point the finger at them?

  • @Orlok Tsubodai (Comment 20) : I’m not saying his doing a good job of being head coach I’m saying let us find a new coach and let gold do what he was hired for then we can judge him, its not fair to chuck him out without giving him a proper shot to do HIS job. Think of it as us buying a flyhalf and asking him to play scrumhalf and when it doesn’t work out we chuck him out without letting him play flyhalf.

I doubt any sharks fan is happy with gold and we are all pissed off but we still got to be fair

I tend to agree with Orlok ,Gold is our problem,he has that desperate mindset of trying not to loose, rather than setting out to win.
The Sharks team is trying to play like the Stormers team in the very recent past, number one mindset, let no trys through, number two kick everything into their half .
But then that doesn’t surprise me this is the rugby Gold learnt,as an assistant to Solomons and Zondagh, the same guys who taught Alistar ,and the reason why they had 12 barren years in the Western Cape

  • The problem here is not the new coach, but the players. The players are making basic mistakes and bad decisions on the field. If these things stop happening the Sharks will start winning. Gold has a game plan, but if the players don’t execute the plan then how can you blame him. Like Rob said, back to basics. The player need to take it upon themselves to learn how to catch and pass a ball, they are pro players right? At this level it should not be the coaches job to teach them this.

You need to look back over the past 3 years and you will see that the same problem keeps happening, no matter who the coach is.

The words “between them” should be a dead give-away, if your reading is up to scratch.
My point was they all got chased out of the job, in quick succession and, between them have had good success.

So you reckon the Sharks by some misfortune of fate just happened to contract a squad of players who simply cannot catch, cannot pass and cannot tackle? Haha! No pal, the players clearly do not want to play for Gold. Either they are confused by him or have no confidence in him or feel that under him they do not need to perform because he is their mate or something else you and I will never know. But jeepers, after this dire year of results, of clueless on field performances, of home losses and 50 point thumpings which tell me the players’ hearts are simply not in it, you still feel Gold is the right man to inspire and lead a team to win trophies? Haha. Gold’s job is more than just “coaching” and “strategy”. He has to get the best out of every player and in this especially he fails spectacularly.

John Smit,Shaun Sowerby and various others were given full scholarship,at the University of PMB which had a very decent rugby setup at the time plus minor contracts with the Sharks.
He had to pay to go to Stellenbosch, where he struck gold, in that in seven months he was chosen for the Bok sevens and the rest is history.
He has always harboured a grudge against the Sharks, even tho it was the Sharks who brought him back in 2007 so he could get chosen for the World Cup team.

  • The Sharks simply by default must be a team good enough to win the Currie Cup each year. The fans demand this.

Gold has never won a trophy or league as coach after much trying so clearly he is not up to the task. I would like to know why those who appointed him thought he’d suddenly change at the Sharks? On what basis was he appointed?

The real deal for all of us is Super Rugby and we need a coach who is a trophy winner. A champion. Someone who has the wherewithal and competence to get over that final hurdle. To suggest Gold is that man for 2016 in either head coach (which is looking increasingly likely) or DoR capacity is simply sticking your head in the sand.

Get rid of Gold. Get rid of any problem players. Time to be brave.

If you look at the squads the Bulls and stormers are building and then look at our outdated stock we have available, it paints a very sorry picture. Doesn’t matter who the fucking coach is, we just don’t have the players.
Partly due to not having a dedicated talent scout but mostly because etienne fynn has been an absolute disaster at the sharks academy. He was handed a perfectly operating academy and in a few short years has completely fucked it up.

Unfortunately no top coach in the world will take the job because it is clear to all that there is a player problem and a CEO problem. I like John but he need to stay out of the coaching decisions and to the job a CEO does. Stay out of the coaches way.

Fact is, both Jake White and Gary Gold were appointed to the same role. Both had the same inexperienced assistants.

Are you telling me Gold was not expecting to jump in and do the same role Jake White did, especially when he was to work with the same inexperienced assistants?

White and Gold must be treated equally. Why are you suggesting the position is any different for Gold?

But that being said how would he manage a head coach not being able to coach and rectify things himself? It’s water under the bridge but I don’t think he was the right guy for either role the problem is how does it get fixed? There doesn’t seem to be any urgency. John and Co are waiting for some magical period after rwc but the problem is that we will once again go into SR with a new coach. Fire Brendan since he does nothing get Gold some help interrim. At this point even divvie can be of use. We have to play this hand now.

Finding a coach to replace him and then letting him do the director of rugby job will be a step in the right direction.

Under Jake we played “mostly winning” “always boring” dictatorship rugby.

Under Gary Gold we’re playing “apologetic” “let’s hope this works” spineless rugby.

We still haven’t found what we’re looking for – wishing any of the previous coaches back still leaves us SR cup-less.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 96) : the problem is growing the game in township schools. Rugby is just far behind soccer when it comes to organising sport in township schools.there are many boys who love to play rugby but just don’t have the access to proper clubs and leagues the clubs are very far apart while soccer clubs are on opposite sides of a road competing with each other making rivals and creating a culture in those teams.

Where I grew up as a kid in kwa mashu F section there were 3 soccer teams in my area alone and a shared
cricket team with E section yet there was no rugby team even now the clubs are doing so well but still no rugby team.

For example take sailing in this country, I worked for a NGO as a sailing instructor SAS( south african sailing) provided the courses I needed from getting a day skipper licence( allows me to drive sail or powered boats),my ISAF(international sailing federation)level 1 coaching certificate aswell as the ISAF level 2 coaching certificate allowing me to coach anywhere in the world. Sports and rec fitted all those bills. Its the organisations that are responsible for growing they sports and the department will assist. My NGO called sail africa does development at a lot of township high schools and we get kids to come and sail, sports and rec fits the bill for most of it. All they can do is give you funds for your project.

  • @Poisy (Comment 127) : No man, this is no good. A basketball court requires so little in terms of space and upkeep and its a game that can be played by all.

  • @Poisy (Comment 134) :

No I am just interested on how SARU helps the established schools and ignores the rural schools?

Important to note too. Schools falls under the jurisdiction of the schools governing body of the union, which is appointed by the union executive. They are also members of the South African School Association, which is appointed by the union representatives at national Exco level.

So lines of management of rugby works; school, union schools association, union, sa schools association, SARU.

  • @Orlok Tsubodai (Comment 115) : Sure…I’ve had my own differences of opinion with the man. Of course, that doesn’t justify the level of antagonism towards him…nor is that the only antagonism to be found on this thread…
