DHL Western Province will be without captain Nizaam Carr when the face the Cell C Sharks in Durban on Saturday, scrumhalf Nic Groom will captain the side in his absence.

Carr injured his hamstring in the first half of his sides class against Griquas last week and while his recovery has gone well it was decided that it was not worth this risk to push him as regular captin Juan de Jongh is already out with a long term injury.

Jaco Taute will also be watching the game on the telly ,the burly centre is suffering with sore groin . His injury presents Huw Jones with an opportunity to start in the 12 jersery, Jones is viewed as a fantastic prospect and this was confirmed by John Dobson “Huw’s selection is an exciting one. I’ve always rated him as an attacking prospect and we feel the time is right to give him a go at inside centre”

“Our 10-12-13 axis is looking very different now from how we started the season, which is a challenge in itself, but I have every confidence in Kurt (Coleman), Huw and Johnny (Kotze) to make things happen for us in Durban.”

The reshuffled backline will have to settle quickly and will be hoping that their pack fires early, WP were strong in the scrums against Griquas but were penalised when trying to assert their dominance , Dobson admitted that he eventually had to give the instruction to not shove or compete on opposition ball.

  • Def some untested guys in that team but let us not forget how well a 2nd string stormers side played against the 1st choice sharks during super rugby

  • Pity for WP, but fortunate for Sharks, as I really rate Carr as a player.

We need to make sure that our kicks are not only accurate, but necessary, as there back three can certainly make you pay for any directionless and pointless kicking, such as we saw last week.

Will be one of the few there to support the boys!

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 8) : We won yes, and in the end it was easy but certainly was no walk in the park. And that Sharks team would cream the one playing on Sat…on paper anyway

The screen saver on my brain is Pat Lambie’s hand off on Schalk Burger, its the first thing that appears when my conciousness switches on every morning.

  • Excellent match ups every where this week end,no givens in any of the games.
That sort of makes for a very good competition in my book.
Maybe we should all stop bitching and start enjoying the contest.
I can’t remember when we had four Currie Cup games that were played on the same week end and were so incredibly balanced.
    Just a thought,use it ,don’t use it.
But anyone who gets a GSP On his Bru this week end ,really knows his rugby or is just very lucky

  • @The hound (Comment 11) : Yeh point i was initially trying to make is that these ‘new’ guys of theirs are actually pretty decent. Nevermind the fact that WP has killed us at Vodacom Cup and Junior levels for years..

  • @SheldonK (Comment 9) : No doubt was a much stronger team that played then, especially our scrum.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 14) : Our scrum is a concern but im not that worried as the way scrums are reffed its literally a lottery who gets the penalty. Of more concern to me is the lineout and defense of the driving maul from it. Chris Cloete is very good at controlling the ball at the back and if we dont man up they will maul us all day long. Their backline does have a bit of speed out wide but so do we so that doesnt worry me as much. Its more what their forward pack will do to us

  • See with that WP midfield I am sure we could have started Heimar at 12 and have Andre on wing. Wandile as backup for both. Reinach Pietersen Williams and Jordaan pretty quick backline. With two strong wings on the sides.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 4) : You are being nice. The bulls back three are scary. Gelling, Ishmael and Ulengo. Leyds has potential, and Senatla can motor, but all are midgets actually! And when they play against bigger players, that are equally fast, like Ulengo, Hendricks and Rhule, they disappear.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 20) : Senatla 186cm/76kg, Kolbe 171cm/72 kg, Leyds 185cm/78 vs Cornal Hendricks 189cm/92kg, Travis Ismael 190cm/95kg, Jamba Ulengo 188cm/100kg, Warwick Gelant 180cm/89kg.

Think that says it all. Don’t think Senatla is that much faster than Ulenngo/Rhule either.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 28) : To me the acceleration figures would make the difference. It’s not like they have to pit strength against each other or that the weight advantage means that much when you are in loose play. I have not in any season so far seen anyone in SA being so effective in tackle breaking use of space or any kind of play that would make this slight physical advantage count for anything?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 29) : I don’t agree with that at all…yes, we haven’t seen much of that in this Currie Cup season, but a heavier wing who can run at the same pace as a light one will almost always be more effective! In the modern game there has been a move towards powerful heavy wings and away from dinky light ones for exactly that reason. I also think it is one reason why Province have not really delivered on their potential…their back 3′s have just been too light…
Watch all the tries from Super Rugby over the last 5 seasons and note how important strength has been in a remarkably high percentage of tries.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 30) : I’m certainly not saying weight is the only criteria…but being in the 70′s is just a bit light…especially if all 3 members of your back 3 are that light…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 32) : I am going to the game today in the firm belief that Gold has got his shit together and remembered enough about coaching,to put a confident motivated team on the park.
Come on Sharks you can’t put on a 50% show in that jersey.
Last weeks performance wasn’t good enough and if we can lift it this week we could just ignite and finally give me the game I have been waiting all year for.
