What to expect when you’re expecting

A silly title, perhaps, but as Sharks fans we find ourselves in a rather peculiar situation – for the first time in ten years, in with an all-too-realistic shot of not making the Currie Cup knock-out phase.

We’ve done all the requisite navel gazing, angry ranting, introspection, hopeful wondering and desperate pleading after the bad loss to Western Province and I’d be surprised if there were too many genuine Sharks fans who look ahead to this weekend’s game against the Lions with any expectation of a win. While we could always look for rationalisation when bemoaning less than convincing wins against lesser opposition, last week was, perhaps, the turning point (or rather the point at which reality dawned) for many fans; we were weighed and found sorely wanting against the sort of team against whom we should be measuring ourselves.

Perhaps Gary Gold has a master plan, after all and has been slowly trying to lead us to this realisation? Doing what he can with a limited group of players still carrying plenty of emotional baggage from the last few years, Gold seeks improvement and can only concentrate on a “process” that will hopefully yield results at some point in the future, because he’s done the hard analysis and has realised that he doesn’t have a combination that can realistically challenge for the honours this year.

The reality that the Sharks of 2015 are not a Currie Cup force was laid bare – in black and white – for all to see this last weekend and with games against the log leaders coming up over the next two weeks, it’s perhaps even a little naive to expect that we’ll still be in contention for fourth spot by the time the last two rounds come around.

As fans, I think it’s important not to delude ourselves. We should not expect a perfect, match-winning performance against the Lions this weekend. Rather, we should look for signs of the recovery that will hopefully be realised in years to come – take positives from the play of the individuals who will be an important part of our Super Rugby future, but not get too worked up when those who are just filling the gaps don’t live up to our expectations.

It’s not much, but it’s all that I have this morning.

  • Thanks Rob. Your right, there’s hardly any hope or expectation of a win this weekend. We can only hope to see more guys putting up their hands and put in a great performance, we need more players to start standing out despite the lack of grunt upfront.

  • Rob last time you wrote an article like this ,totally devoid of even a semblance of hope was when we were in New Zealand on the end of a desperate underperforming tour.We were up against a rampant Crusaders and all hope was extinguished.
I was the lone voice on here that said we would win that game.I was belittled by all and sundry, but hey with at times with only 13 men on the field, the team found a place deep with in the soul of the thing that is the Sharks and produced the upset of the tournament.
Maybe just maybe, this week end we can find that place again.
This is why I have supported this team since 1963.

  • I’m glad that some of the young guys are trying their all. The du preez monsters stand out, kleinhans gives his all, Thomas is trying in the front row but the rest of the right five isn’t performing. Back line is showing little promise, especially on defence. Here’s to hoping the rest of the guys perform well this weekend!

  • So looking at this CC group and which of them stand a realistic (read deserving) chance at SR next year:

    1.Thomas du Toit

    6. Franna!
    7. du Preez x 2

    9. Claasens, Reinach/Ungerer

    11. Esterhuizen (don’t kid yourselves, he’s a wing)

    13. Sithole (yes Gold, 13 – or 14 if he really has to)
    14. Jordaan (been poor at 13, but he sure has class)
    15. Pieterson

Basically, we have no tight five and no backline combinations….kind of goes a long way in showing why we are nowhere during this CC.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 11) : @grant10 (Comment 14) : Looking at Super Rugby 2016 and our lack of lock options would it be worth trying Dan Du Preez at 4 (didn’t he play 4 at age group level not so long ago) with Lewies at 5 and Jean-Luc at 7. Coupled with Marcel and Philip de Walt or Deysel as the other 2 loosies. I think that should give us grunt just not sure about line out options.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 11) : As for the backline I agree about Andre. I’ve never bought into him at 12 but at 11 he looked a different animal, Savea-ish… Big strong guys tend to be more difficult to push over the touchline. The only issue then would be who plays 12? Heimer is great when he subs but Rob has already pointed out he goes quiet when he starts. I have wanted to see Sithole and Jordaan trade jerseys for about 2 years now. Think that could be a dangerous combination. Then with Mvovo, Willie and Joe to add to the back three we have a very dangerous, multi-skilled 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 for 2016.

  • So how can the Sharks beat the Lions. As a start i think trying to play ball in hand running rugby would be a mistake as we cannot seem to hold onto our own ball and the Lions will destroy us running turnovers with our fragmented defense. As a must we need to at least win our own ball in the scrums and lineouts. And then kick it deep and make them run it back…yes they have some good runners but if their loosies and especially tight 5 keep having to turn and run then it should blunt their grunt up front in terms of the scrums and mauls etc. This is a game where the Sharks actually dont want the ball.

  • @Letgo (Comment 42) : Really? Centre, lock and hooker are problem areas, but otherwise it looks good!

  • I for one am looking forward to super rugby, we cam put out a decent starting 15. Some good options. Maybe with better locks and loose forwards the hookers will have more confidence, and the props will perform better. I said at the start of the CC i wanted us to use this tournament to gauge the ability of all three young hookers. And only marais has impressed me over all. Cooper and hadebe struggled mightly with throwing, and to a degree scrumming (but is that really them or the props and the locks around them. And dont forget giant is back for SR
