Hie komme Bokke! Olé, olé, olé, olé! That’s right, fans – it’s time to dust off your Leon Schuster classics CD, because the World Cup is here again.

Today’s first challenge sees our nation’s finest take on the minnow-y but improving Japanese, the first time these two nations have been on opposing sides in a major conflict since 1940 (what, too soon?)

Wiley Eddie Jones, soon to be Stormers bound if the rumours are true, will certainly have a trick or two up his sleeve, but Heyneke Meyer’s finest are expected to have simply too much firepower and will want to open their pool B account with a big win. To add a little Sharks flavour to proceedings, be sure to keep an eye on Japanese winger Kotaro Matsushima, who attended the Sharks Academy and has played for the black and white at age group and Vodacom Cup level.

Kick-off is at 17h45 SA time (16h45 in the UK) and the game takes place at the famous Brighton Community Stadium, in a town where the Stormers players, at least, should feel quite at home.

South Africa: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Jean de Villiers (captain), 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Pat Lambie, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Schalk Burger, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Lood de Jager, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Trevor Nyakane, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 20 Siya Kolisi, 21 Fourie du Preez, 22 Handré Pollard, 23 JP Pietersen.

Japan: 15 Ayumu Goromaru, 14 Akihito Yamada, 13 Male Sa’u, 12 Craig Wing, 11 Kotaro Matsushima, 10 Kosei Ono, 9 Fumiaki Tanaka, 8 Hendrik Tui, 7 Michael Broadhurst, 6 Michael Leitch (captain), 5 Hitoshi Ono, 4 Luke Thompson, 3 Kensuke Hatakeyama, 2 Shota Horie, 1 Masataka Mikami
Replacements: 16 Takeshi Kizu, 17 Keita Inagaki, 18 Hiroshi Yamashita, 19 Shinya Makabe, 20 Amanaki Mafi, 21 Atsushi Hiwasa, 22 Harumichi Tatekawa, 23 Karne Hesketh

  • It does show how late and how quickly things can go wrong. With Louw being our only fetcher, imagine if he got injured just before kickoff and we can’t fly someone over…that would screw our loose forward balance up and shows that it might not be so clever not to have that balance in the squad…

This loss is not just embarrassing and deeply disappointing, it’s painful because it disgraces a rich legacy. I’m sure it can be made right in time with the right people at the helm but right now it hurts. I can’t celebrate this loss even if it comes at Meyer’s expense because this team is larger than Meyer. This is a blight on our record and I wish it wasn’t there.

    2007 JW had Jones.
    2011 PdV had Erasmus.
2015 HM has HM – I hope saru calls an emergency meeting to force HM into getting technical advisers on boards asap….maybe that’s where Naas disappeared to.

  • Japan absolutely BWILLIANT. Totally outsmarted the bokke. From low-chop tackling, to nz-like passing skills, to smart little grubbers, to quick scrum feed, to the ultimate humiliation of scoring a maul try against boks, to all round team effort. And look at that former sharks boy with the 11 jersey – kept yelling to my folks that he’s the Julian Swauvia of Japan.

  • What happened had to happen so that SA rugby can finally wake up and realise that our rugby has not grown in the past 8 years and that a new way of thinking and playing is a must. It would be criminal to give HM an extension. The last time our rugby was leading the pack was when Mallet was our coach and when Eddie assisted Jake. I just pray that Smit and our board got an even bigger awakening and are now fully convinced that a quality coach that understands what he is doing, what he wants to achieve and how is a non negotiable. Smit needs to get the board to literally grant him a blank cheque to get that coach. I fear what the Stormers are going to do to teams next year. The board needs to appoint someone like Nick Mallet to help us with the identification, interviewing and selection of such a coach. We can’t trust Smit with that as he will fall for the first smooth talker. Did you hear what Eddie Jones said? “No team I coach will ever be accessed of not working on the field”….in our lives that is…no team I coach will ever be accused of not having pride for the jersey. This is where our coaches get it wrong(and so many of us), they think gees is what enables our players to have a better ruck technique, better tackle technique, better counter attack strategybetter defence strategy, better understanding of how to manipulate space and manufacture tries. International coaches realise that is a coaching issue and that if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

He attacked the line nicely and looked for the offload, but there never was a player that wdnt with him,so he went to ground. Made a lot of good tackles and didn’t miss one. Serious changes are required, and our national rugby coach should be forced into taking advice from the coaches of our franchises. (in other words, everybody gets together and fight-out the best gameplan for the new season going forward).

SA coaches are too dumb to come up with gameplans by themselves…NZ realised this about their coaches 6 years ago already – and their coaches aren’t nearly as “dense” as our boys.

Typically, SA were the team to drop their guard, underestimate their lower ranked opposition, believe they could just pitch and run over their opposition, use “physicality” instead of brains. But don’t worry now we will hear all the “wounded Bok” cliches.

  • I tell you what, SA Super rugby teams (and the Sharks especially) beware the Japanese Super Rugby team next year. If the single Japanese team can showcase the best Japanese players, like those on show yesterday, then we cannot expect to simply walk all over them.

I hope someone at the Sharks has taken note and someone has been set the task of researching their players…

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 502) : Eddie Jones has shown that coaching is about as much as identifying weakness in the opposition and exploiting that weakness. Too many timies I hear the standard line from SA players and coaches, “as long as we play how we want to play we don’t have to worry what the opposition does”. I always get the sense we have no brains, no opposition study, behind the scenes.

  • Those that are blaming the ref – please stop. If you think that’s why the boks lost night then you really don’t know rugby. even if we got a few more points and had ‘won’ the game it would still have been unacceptable. We didn’t just lose on the scoreboard.

Last night was the ultimate win for brains over brawn. A very savvy coach took a tier 2 nation and unlocked every aspect of our game.
Worryingly for SA, imagine what he could do with a tier 1 side?
Rugby is changing, I’ve said it for a while. And SA is being left behind. Rugby is going the route of nfl, where skill and brawny are a given, it’s all about unlocking the opposition’s defence. And for that you need to be smart, not big and tough.

2007 did us a great disservice, it made us think we were heading down the right direction when we weren’t. We all celebrated like it was 1999, yet all it did was reaffirm our misguided belief that size and experience will win you games, when the rest of the world was moving towards quicker, more creative rugby.

We have now been beaten by wales Ireland Argentina and Japan over the course of a year or so.
Those are not the results of a team with a relevant gamplan , given the depth of playing resources at SAs disposal.

Bring in guys with genuine desire for whom this is the biggest thing in their careers nit the been there done that boys. Thirdly bring back a play of or trials system with a selection board not just a coach with all the power. He is human and does not have the same perspective and unbiasedness a trial and selection board could bring. Lastly IT IS the coach’s fault if you still s lose after halftime and the failing gameplan continues.

  • As for last night’s game obviously our crash game wasn’t working. So coach should have opted for an Arial attack and used our line outs and scrum more since we had an advantage there. He should have had a scrumhalf like page with quicker service and one who doesn’t take kicking duty away from the flyhalf by placing poor kicks himself. Aka ruan Pienaar.

But given what he has I would have thought quick service from a guy like Page to a good tactical kicker like Lambie would have been an option for getting the ball up. If we have lock injuries we only have lood left who is any kind of good form the rest are old or been out on injury for a year. HM biggest downfall was hubris. He vastly underestimated his opponents and was too stupid or too proud to effect proper changes at the right time. Marcell Whiteley and Kriel would have been pretty good options. Coenie also had no games this year and was thrown in. I can’t really blame the backline too much but man did they slice through midfield quite easily. Jean may as well not have showed up and JP on sub meant zilch.

I mean we have only been prepared to use the two grandfathers as captain, we have played guys all year who are not there, we have guys there who have played LITERALLY no rugby this year, we have a third scrummy who should be playing because the other two are crap and underdone but he himself has never played for the Boks…and the list goes on! Absolutely mind-boggling!!

  • So just my 10 cents (taking into account inflation)…the Boks were too slow and predictable (as they have been last few years). Japan fronted up and made their tackles in channel 1 where we crashed it up, then they waited for us to kick and their quick runners brought it back. Meyer needs to take responsibility of not having a plan B and not making tactical subs earlier. The players need to take some responsibility for that horrible execution and man up for the next game. Its about time we saw some aggressive in your face Bok rugby please.
lastly- i think its a problem having DeVilliers,Matfield and Burger all on the field at the same time, they all trying to lead the side and we are looking rudderless. Trust me the All Blacks, England and Ireland for example all know exactly who is the leader no questions asked

  • @pastorshark (Comment 577) : 110%. Forwards must either pick and go around the fringe but if they are going to stand off they must receive the ball from the 10 not the 9. if 10 gets the ball first he then has forwards on this left or right and can either play them or behind their backs to the 12/13. That would create options and variety in the Bok play…which i know is a strange concept but it is possible.

Yes thats the way the All Blacks play but if we think we are going to beat them at their own game think again. We couldnt even play fast enough to scare the Japs. So no Pienaar not the quickest but he should have been playing a close pod of forwards over and over and over again. Keep making the Japs tackle our big forwards close in. If we kick make sure it goes out so our 2m locks can compete. Yes the public want the Boks to play like the All Blacks…id prefer to see some good old fashioned brutal bok grind us to wins. It may not look pretty during but the scoreboard sure looks pretty after

We did daft things that actually made us play individually and away from our strengths. As for Pienaar: I have been quite complimentary of Pienaar this season. I’m saying that on Saturday he was poor! He wasn’t poor because he was the reason we couldn’t play like the All Blacks. He was poor because he couldn’t even play our limited game plan well.

Not just stand and stare up at the coaches box and hope for some key cards telling them what to do. It goes back to my earlier comment…too many ‘leaders’ in this team all with their own followers

I actually also thought of that. HM should have replace Jean at halftime (or earlier) with Pollard. Pollard is excellent ball in hand player (more akin to a 12, than a the decision maker a 10 should be). I believe if HM made that one change and also removed Schalk (I was hoping for a yellow when Schalk grabbed the guy by the neck and flung him to the ground), we would have looked much better and had a reasonably comfortable win.

There is still players I would like to see replaced for the next game. Ruan, Victor, Zane, Flouw, but for a start getting Jean and Schalk as far as possible from this team, would make the world of difference.

The after WC, drop HM and get a coach that will select on form, instead of selecting his buddies.

Think the other part of the issue was Lambie having to fight his way past forwards standing in his channel so that he could actually get the ball. Yes there arguments saying as a 10 he should dictate but yeh forwards (mainly Burger) receiving the ball and then killing all momentum was a problem

  • @Letgo (Comment 612) : As i said in a previous post i think there is an issue with Jean, Matfield and Schalk all on the field and trying to ‘lead’. So yes by removing Jean and Schalk you would have 1 leader. You would hav a hard runner at 12 that can also kick to the corners if needed. You remove Burger from the 10 channel so now the backline flows a bit more.

First, I don’t know why Jesse was made a scapegoat for that Arg game, wing is not much different than 15, so I feel like he could easily be picked at 14 in future.

Second, I think it would be better to pick him at 15, because a 15 on attack joins the line, much like a 13 would and Jesse is potent in the midfield… and I like Willie at 14 more than at 15, because he’s better when he’s given that freedom.

  • @Letgo (Comment 630) : I know why he was picked as a scapegoat for that game…because three times he was glaringly out of position and those three times led directly to points! I wouldn’t pick him there again…

  • @vanmartin (Comment 632) : Agree with your views on Zane…plus surely chip kicks straight to the opposition, kicks miles straight into touch and the like should count against him?

  • @The hound (Comment 633) : Though that sort of hit might address one big problem we have and give us a chance to fly Frans over…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 640) : To be fair the AR was at fault there. Zane’s foot was on the 22m line, and if I am not mistaken the line belongs to the 22m area.
