Fisher calls time on Sharks

Announced late last week was that Junior Springbok three-quarter Tyler Fisher will play for the Pumas from next season. 21-year-old Fisher, a product of Westville Boys High and the Sharks age-group setup, played for South Africa at under 20 level in 2013.

Jake White surprised many when plucking Fisher – a regular at 13 – from the under 21 ranks to start at fullback for the Sharks shadow Super Rugby side against Saracens at the beginning of last season. An unfortunate injury sustained in that match curtailed Fisher’s involvement at senior level and he appeared to lose his way a little after that, with no further opportunities in either Currie Cup or Super Rugby level for the black and white.

Fisher played for the Emerging Springbok Sevens team in a few tournaments earlier this year before moving to Potchefstroom to play for the Leopards on loan. As a stand out performer in Robert du Preez’s team in the Currie Cup first division, it was inevitable that the Sharks’ loss would be another side’s gain and it appears that the Nelspruit based Pumas (already boasting a fair few Sharks age-group discards) are the side set to benefit.

We’d like to bid Fish farewell and wish him nothing but the best of luck for his future.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 1) : There is a good chance he will. It is not often I have a feeling about a player at school level. Tyler was definitely one for the future after watching a number of his first team matches at Westville. I had the same feeling watching Kriel play for College and Pollard at the Kearsney Festival. I always thought an Esterhuizen, Fisher combo would do well in the future at the Sharks. No more it would seem.

  • Another blow for us. As for chris I said here a few years ago that he is one for the future and someone told me he has an attitude problem.

Said the same about ross cronje and people felt he wasn’t a big lose yet he is out performing our bok scrummie

I believed the same of burden and a lot of people shared my belief on that, if cooper goes and signs maybe with the cheetahs he would do so well he would end up a bok by end of next year. We have backed the wrong youth in durbz

  • @ChrisS (Comment 48) : @StevieS (Comment 49) : So basically Gert Smal will fulfill the proper DOR role behind the scenes, Jones will coach the top side in super rugby and then become a technical advisor of sorts during the CC. Yeh im sure the WP u19s and u21s will def not benefit from that and it def wont produce a good conveyor belt of talent for the top side. WP are clearly getting it all wrong.

  • As Sharks supporters we all seem to have different ideas on what a DOR and a Coach does. In Europe this role is fairly standard and most clubs openly display the roles expected from people in the club

From my understanding the DOR needs to do the following

    • Develop and implement a coordinated programme throughout all sections
    of the Club.
    • Co-ordinating the implementation of Club’s “agreed playing philosophy”
    throughout all teams.
    • Take responsibility for the recruitment retention of players, coaches and and developing and maintaining with local schools and clubs.
    • Provide succession planning to ensure that coaches are appointed to all teams receive the appropriate training required attending designated coaching courses.
    • Report to the Executive Committee on rugby matters and make recommendations on improvements/ initiatives that need to be
    implemented.
    • Liaise with the Club coaches, players committee and team captains on matters such as playing facilities, equipment, playing gear, etc
    • Be aware of all administrative procedures regarding player registration and eligibility.

    Coaches are responsible for
    • Report improvements or suggestions to club programme with DOR.
    • Handle player grievences and concerns escalate if needed.
    • Selecting and preparing the team for matches.
    • Planning and preparing for training sessions and activities.

I know it seems that the Coach does nothing but the later two tasks are the bread and butter of the club, if he is skilled at those two things the club will do well. In the postings above I can see references to the coaches doing a lot of DOR work which is either caused by our current confusion of roles or the confusion of roles is caused by the similar thoughts in other people. At the end of the day the DOR does some of what we would expect a head coach to do and some of what we would expect a president/committee to do leaving the coach able to do what he needs to do to train the team without distractions, at the same time making sure the president/committee can focus on other things which they need to.
