Rest for Marco as Bulls loom large

Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold has made a somewhat unusual selection call this week, resting captain Marco Wentzel for Friday night’s must-win Currie Cup clash against the Bulls. With the veteran lock having played 80 minutes every week so far, it’s not unexpected that he’d need a bit of a breather, but the timing can perhaps be questioned, given the critical nature of this match.

Aussie Dave McDuling will earn his first Currie Cup start in Wentzel’s number 5 jersey, with the latter playing off the wood this week. Philip van der Walt assumes the captaincy, with Christian de Bruin earning maiden start at blind-side flank in the only other change to the starting team. Neither du Preez brother is in the mix this wee, both carrying injurues after the Lions game. Dan’s knee has flared up again, while Jean-Luc’s season appears over with a wrist fracture.

With the backline unchanged for this clash, the only other movements come on the bench. There’s a welcome return for Jean Deysel, who plays in 19, while a surprise twist sees Baby Bok loosehead Mzamo Majola included as the reserve prop, in place of Dale Chadwick, who hurt his neck against the Lions.

Sharks: 15 Odwa Ndungane, 14 Wandile Mjekevu, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Sibusiso Sithole, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Philip van der Walt (capt), 7 Christiaan de Bruin, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Dave McDuling, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Thomas du Toit.
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Mzamo Majola, 18 Marco Wentzel , 19 Jean Deysel, 20 Michael Claassens, 21 Heimar Williams, 22 Garth April.

  • Pity about the twins but nice to see Deysel on the bench though. Phillip as captain is quite a pleasant surprise.

  • Very understandable regarding Wentzel- considering he was signed as depth cover but has pretty much played every minute its no wonder the guy is a bit flat. Add to that the weight of captaincy and im sure he didnt expect his time at the sharks to be this tough mentally. I thought some guys in the backline were average last week so they need to step up but the continuity is good. The Bulls will come out firing and needing a win so if we can go ahead early in the game the self doubt in their young side may come through again. But it will be very tough

  • I can see the headline already:

Bulls win tight affair, Gold happy with further improvement

    …without actually winning a match.

  • I’m happy with this team, although, at some point, I would love to see Garth April being given a start. Hopefully at 10 with Joe moving back into the 15 position.

Again, I’m just asking that the Sharks do the basics right this week. Last week was an improvement on all aspects IMO. Better scrumming, better line-outs, much better handling than weeks before, except for one thing …. defense and lapse in focus (that’s two things, but basically I feel like our defense collapses because of that drop in focus).

We need to start doing the good things we’re doing (and I’m actually starting to notice one or two things), more consistently, or even continually, without a break.

Improve the whole damn alphabet before the start of the season and actually win some matches. That is what the fans want to see, not this improvement BS..

  • @Letgo (Comment 4) :

I have visibly given up on getting to the quarters or even winning another game. I just need the Sharks to give me some hope for next year…

This would actually start with indicating whether there is a proper coach lined up for next year, or whether we’re just going to continue with the bunch we have.

I’m ready for a bad period. We all go through them. I have faith that we will get up again. My first season supporting the Sharks at the tank was 2000 (when we moved to Durban). I remember also just getting excited if the Sharks could at least put together an exciting play and score a beautiful try. We came back just the next season, but then 2002-2005 weren’t that great either, we barely even got anywhere in CC. I didn’t miss one game though and I’m not about to start now.

If John Smit has a passion for the Sharks, like I do, he will make sure that we make a comeback. Get the best guys in to turn the Sharks around.

    Black and White FOREVER!!!

  • This is the weakest line up in the history of the Sharks brand.
shit we have really sunk to the pits.
Can’t see us hanging onto Paul Jordan,Esterhuizen and Thomas du Toit for much longer

  • It’s about time other players are given a chance at 5 so they can get some confidence ahead of SR. Actually Marco shouldn’t start again. Philip seems the only obvious choice to captain us. Wonder if Smit offered PSDT the captaincy? It’s not like we have a string of players putting their hands up for the role. I say make this Philip thing permanent.

  • I would love for us to try, just try, 11. Andre 12. Heimer 13. Sithole 14. Jordaan. Andre was a beast at wing and feel Sithole takes contact better than Jordaan so the swap could work well.

  • not to want to be too optimistic but the squad composition is starting to look a lot better. I am hoping the same set phase improvement continues from last week and some intensity in the tackle and ruck area can just do the trick.

I truely hope the new starts will be up for it, especially De Bruyn coming out to prove a point. pity about twins. the young Majola cannot go any worse than Chadwick has done and luckily the Bulls not same level of scrum as Lions and WP.

Go boys, prove us all wrong ;-)

  • @The hound (Comment 9) : not so sure

clever man management and having these guys understand that they are the current and future stars, building the team around them, make them feel and act like senior players, etc will go a long way. They can all and should become Springboks and need to be nurtured but handed responsibility.

these three have had to play in the shadows of big names and can now really be allowed to be the stars that they should be. if John and Gary can clearly articulate the vision and the plan of how to get there, I am confident the guys will stay.

Jordaan and Thomas all passed up other opportunities and I have a feeling they care for the jersey…

Need more of that across the team. Oosthuizen, Wandile…

  • Bulls side is out. Carthorse Fouche is relegated to the bench and Swanepoel’s defensive frailties makes way for Serfontein who will play at 13.
So now the backs are sorted. Just hope the scrum looks better.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 38) : SA coaches make me tired. They are just lazy to the core. Unfortunately if we want to compete with international teams we have to import top international coaches that have a big think tank so transfer that skill to us. We also need to move away from our obsession with size cause it limits our thinking.
