Anyone ever wonder where the term “penultimate” actually comes from? The answer is that it’s derived from the Latin “paenultimus“, a combination of “paene” meaning “almost” and “ultimus” meaning “last”. I’m surmising a bit here, but I would imagine that our adoption of the term to mean strictly “second last” is not exactly what the Romans had in mind, but it’s close enough to make little difference.

The reason for this ramble, of course, is to try and add just a little interest to an otherwise rather boring subject. Currie Cup – that chalice of hopes and post-Super Rugby disaster dreams – seems destined once more for a year-long respite away from the cobwebbed trophy cabinet of Kings Park and with each step away from the title that our team takes, my interest wanes by an equivalent amount.

Tonight sees the only really interesting game of the round, with title contenders the Lions and Western Province going head-to-head in Joburg. Johan Ackermann’s team are unbeaten and will look to defend that proud record at Ellis Park (kicking off at 6pm), while Province are very much in the running for the second home semi-final and will need to knock the Lions over in order to achieve that goal. Facing a trickier run in then the Bulls (with whom they are level on points), it’s time for John Dobson’s young team to step up and show if they can really be considered the real deal this year and a game against the Lions in Johannesburg is the ideal opportunity to do that. Ackermann’s team has been weakened a bit by some injury withdrawals, but there is just such a good vibe in that team that I’ll back them to find a way all the same. Lions to win a thrilling contest by around 5 points.

Golden Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Courtnall Skosan, 13 Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 12 Howard Mnisi, 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Marnitz Boshoff, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Stephan de Witt, 6 Jaco Kriel (captain), 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Lourens Erasmus, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Dylan Smith.
Replacements: 16 Mark Pretorius, 17 Ruan Dreyer, 18 Fabian Booysen, 19 Albertus Smith, 20 Jaco van der Walt, 21 Nicolaas Hanekom, 22 Sampie Mastriet.

Western Province: 15 Cheslin Kolbe/Dillyn Leyds, 14 Dillyn Leyds/Kobus van Wyk, 13 Johnny Kotze, 12 Juan de Jongh (captain), 11 Seabelo Senatla, 10 Robert du Preez, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Nizaam Carr, 7 Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 6 Chris Cloete, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Jean Kleyn, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16 Michael Willemse, 17 Oli Kebble, 18 Chris van Zyl, 19 Jurie van Vuuren, 20 Godlen Masimla, 21 Kurt Coleman, 22 Huw Jones.

Also tonight, the Bulls take on the Kings at Loftus, starting at 19h10 (and not on TV). Having rediscovered winning ways against the Sharks (like every other team this season), the Bulls will turn the screws in their last two games as they tune up for the semis. Expect a big hammering, with the Bulls winning by 15 or more.

Blue Bulls: 15 Warrick Gelant, 14 Travis Ismaiel, 13 Dries Swanepoel, 12 Burger Odendaal, 11 Jamba Ulengo, 10 Tian Schoeman, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Arno Botha, 7 Pieter Labuschagne (captain), 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Rudolph Snyman, 4 Jacques du Plessis, 3 Marcel van der Merwe, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Pierre Schoeman.
Replacements: 16 Corniel Els, 17 Werner Kruger, 18 Marvin Orie, 19 Ruan Steenkamp, 20 Ivan van Zyl, 21 Louis Fouché, 22 William Small Smith.

Eastern Province Kings: 15 Scott van Breda, 14 Sylvian Mahuza, 13 JP du Plessis, 12 Tim Whitehead (captain), 11 Luther Obi, 10 Elgar Watts, 9 Enrico Acker, 8 Jacques Engelbrecht, 7 Stefan Willemse, 6 Thembelani Bholi, 5 Cornell Hess, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Tom Botha, 2 Martin Ferreira, 1Lizo Gqoboka.
Replacements: 16 Edgar Marutlulle, 17 Schalk Ferreira, 18 Simon Kerrod, 19 Paul Schoeman, 20 Tim Agaba, 21 Dwayne Kelly, 22 Karlo Aspeling.

In Nelspruit, the Pumas take on the Cheetahs at 13h15, a game that will be watched almost as closely by Sharks fans as by supporters of the teams actually playing. Currently clinging to fourth spot, Franco Smith’s team took a real hammering at home last week and are in danger of sacrificing that coveted spot to either the Sharks or the Pumas themselves. While even a win here is unlikely to really seal a maiden play-off place for the plucky Lowvelders, you simply have to back them to do the job at home this week against a team that has battled for consistency (and is now without a key playmaker in Fred Zeilinga for the rest of the season). Pumas to win by 4.

Pumas: 15 JW Bell, 14 Jerome Pretoius, 13 Hoffmann Maritz, 12 Stefan Watermeyer (captain), 11 Rosko Specman, 10 Justin van Staden, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 JC Fraser, 7 Uzair Cassiem, 6 Jaco Bouwer, 5 Marius Coetzer, 4 Giant Mtyanda, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Frank Herne, 1 Corné Fourie
Replacements: 16 Francois du Toit, 17 De-Jay Terblanche, 18 Rudi Mathee, 19 Marnus Schoeman, 20 Reynier van Rooyen, 21 Hennie Skorbinski, 22 Bernardo Botha

Free State Cheetahs: 15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Sergeal Petersen, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Ryno Benjamin, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 De Wet Kruger, 7 Teboho Mohoje, 6 Gerhard Olivier, 5 Francois Uys (captain), 4 Reniel Hugo, 3 Luan De Bruin, 2 Neil Rautenbach, 1 Teunis Nieuwoudt .
Replacements: 16 Chase Morison, 17 BG Uys, 18 Willem Serfontein, 19 Freddy Ngoza, 20 Ruan Van Rensburg, 21 Niel Marais, 22 Adriaan van der Berg Coertzen.

Finally, the Sharks face bogey side Griquas in Kimberley, kicking off at 3pm. It’s not been a happy year for either side, with victories in short supply. In years gone by, the tough-as-nails “kwaste” have handed Sharks Currie Cup sides many a bloody nose at their GWK Park stronghold. It’s hard to see this year’s bunch having the same impact, but then again, the Sharks have struggled to put in any sort of a performance all season long and seem incapable of bringing the necessary levels of effort and concentration for 80 minutes, regardless of the foe. This will be close and scrappy, but the Sharks should take it by 6 points or so, thus keeping the fading dream alive for another week.

Griquas: 15 Ntabeni Dukisa, 14 Danie Dames, 13 Michael van der Spuy, 12 Clinton Swart, 11 Ruhan Nel, 10 Francois Brummer, 9 Tian Meyer (captain), 8 Carel Greeff, 7 Jono Janse van Rensburg, 6 RJ Liebenberg, 5 Hugo Kloppers, 4 Jonathan Adendorf, 3 Stephan Kotze, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 Steph Roberts.
Replacements: 16 Abraham le Roux, 17 Danie Mienie, 18 Leon Karemaker, 19 Wendal Wehr, 20 Dylon Frylinck, 21 Gouws Prinsloo, 22 Sandile Ngcobo.

Sharks: 15 Odwa Ndungane, 14 Wandile Mjekevu, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Sibusiso Sithole, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Etienne Oosthuizen, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Marco Wentzel (captain), 4 Dave McDuling, 3 Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Thomas du Toit.
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Mzamo Majola, 18 Christiaan de Bruin, 19 Jean Deysel, 20 Michael Claassens, 21 Heimar Williams, 22 Garth April.

  • I’ll go with Lions, Bulls, Cheetahs, Sharks.

The Pumas making it into the semis would be pretty awesome though.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : Yeah, the Cheetahs have been up and down, but they had such a disrupted team against the Lions, that a hammering was imminent. They still managed to score 5 tries of their own. They had 10 players that debuted this year in the team, with three starting for the 1st time in the Kruger brothers, and Vincent Jobo.

They will have enough to beat a very strong Pumas team. We owe them one lol.

  • So are all these teams going to miss out on playing 2 of the teams twice. Sharks getting away with not playing Bulls and Stormers away. What type of half assed competition is this then. Pffft Proudly brought to you by the joint architects of SuperRugby 2016.

  • I feel the Sharks will pull off a win this weekend but feeling really uneasy about it. We’ve lost far to many games against Griquas in recent years and I think our recent history in Kimberly is not pretty reading.

  • I agree Rob, interest in rugby has waned a bit and I can see it on this site. There’s not even World Cup related threads. Just the odd Bok or Sharks story. Not like in the past. Can you believe I’ve joined this site 7 years ago? And never has news been so scarce than this year.

Sharks may as well stay in Bloem after next weekend lol.

I know we have no hope in hades of going any further than that, but its kind of like getting a sucker after a visit to the dentist.
Cheetahs just don’t have the firepower and experience in the tight 5 yet. There is lots to work with, but it will take a season or two to mould. Think Luan de Bruin has potential, but apart from him and Maks van Dyk the cupboard is bare.
The u/21 team is a sliver of hope going forward though.
