The Sharks have picked up full points from their Currie cup encounter against Griquas at GWK Stadium, in a match that was not televised. The visitors scored 6 tries in a 45-20 win that sees them move within striking distance of the fourth-placed Cheetahs.

This report courtesy www.supersport.com:

“The Griquas made a fast start to the contest with left wing Ruhan Nel crashing over for a converted try after an intercept deep in his own half in just the fifth minute after the Sharks had turned down two kickable penalties in favour of setting up attacking line outs.

The Sharks finally opened their account, in the 18th minute, thanks to a penalty from flyhalf Joe Pietersen before the visitors took the lead two minutes later when scrumhalf Cobus Reinach sniped over for a try under the posts with Pietersen kicking the conversion.

The visitors were building up a head of steam and outside centre Paul Jordaan nabbed his team’s second try just three minutes after the first with the Sharks racing to a 17-7 lead.

The hosts narrowed the gap to seven points thanks to a penalty from inside centre Clinton Swart but the Sharks restored their scoreboard dominance when flank Francois Kleinhans rumbled over for a converted try in the 33rd minute.

The visitors then wrapped up their bonus point try with four minutes left in the half when inside centre Andre Esterhuizen powered his way over for a converted score.

The Griquas improved their defensive patterns at the start of the second half and they held the Sharks out until the 54th minute when replacement scrumhalf Michael Claassens went over for a converted try.

The Sharks continued to assert their dominance and left wing Sibusiso Sithole added his name to the try-scorer’s list before the Griquas finally managed to breach the visitor’s defence when they grabbed two late tries through replacement back Sandile Ngcobo and Nel.”

Sharks (45): Tries Cobus Reinach, Francios Kleinhans, Michael Claassesn, Adnre Esterhuizen, S’bura Sithole, Paul Jordaan. Conversions Joe Pietersen (6). Penalty Pietersen.
Griquas (20): Tries Sandile Ngcobo, Ruhan Nel(2). Conversion Clinton Swart. Penalty Swart.

  • @MikeVS (Comment 1) : If it’s not televised on DSTV then you will most likely not find it anywhere online.

  • @Ben (Comment 8) : The u 21 ‘ s are building a formidable unit. This is where management should come in to ensure that unit is not broken up until they can cycle into seniors. Something we have been failing at for a while now. Something a D.O.R. should be doing?

  • Nice to win. Just a pity this wasn’t against a big team… because we lost to all of them already.

An away semi final at Ellis Park would be like lambs to the slaughter. Might be best if we finish 5th in fact… and Gold finally gets the boot from going anywhere near the Super Rugby team next year…

  • Great result in Kimberly where better Sharks sides have struggled in the past. Winner takes all vs Free State next weekend. As i said at the start of CC – just making the semis will be a good achievement due to all the changes and disruptions at the Union. It def wont be easy in Bloem though.

  • When last has one of our junior teams been such a shining light for the union? Think it was when the Cronje twins were still playing U21 or am I mistaken?
