  • No doubt the boys will win this and win well. Hope we get ahead early enough to give the bench guys some game time. I’d like to see Paige on for 40 minutes and I’d like Steyn to be given a run longer than 10 minutes, if he’s in the team to get game time, lets give it to him.

  • I love mid week games. It splits the week up nicely. I wish we had more mid week games on the end of year tours, they are always fun to watch.

  • Some young oke I don’t know, who is fiddling with the touch screen in the SABC studio, is excited that Morné Steyn is playing and hopes he will play in the knock outs…wow! Well, Ken Tsimba and Hennie le Roux, both flyhalves, firmly handed him off and said it was a strange decision to take Morné to the world cup…

  • Halftime. Tight-five have performed well enough. Loosies have been really poor. Is Flouw seriously our best option at 6. He’s as anonymous as Schalk is useless at first receiver. Duane has yet to hit any sort of form. Backline seriously lacks tactical appreciation and imagination. We need to gel and soon!

If Steyn was brought in as the steady veteran how can close out a game safely with pinpoint kicking for goals, then he failed miserably don’t you think?

  • I think the US forwards were just so awful that it is impossible to judge the Bok forward’s performances accurately. Maybe they would have been effective against better opposition, but who knows. The US forwards scrummed poorly, did not protect their own ball, did not put any pressure on the gain line, did not tackle well, were so unfit they were buggered by half time….

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 290) : Sorry, can’t agree on Paige. His service looked crisp to me. Fair point regarding Steyn’s goal kicking but he looked pretty good in general. It’s Steyn though, goal kicking is something he’ll be able to sort out pretty quickly, I doubt it’s anything more than rustiness. I doubt he’ll be used though unless Pollard or Lambie pick up injuries. Same goes for Paige. For what the two are – dirt trackers – I’m happy with how they went in there first game-time in ages.

  • @byron (Comment 292) : Paige’s pass is excellent, very crisp, but go back and look at how much quick ball we got with him as Scrummie, and it was not that much, he seems to waste valuable time surveying the situation and then setting himself up for the pass. I don’t see the point in a dive pass after the ball has been in the ruck for 7 seconds while the scrummie is looking all over the field trying to figure out what to do next.

  • Bob Skinstad speaking from his rear-end once again. I’m paraphrasing here but it boils down to “the Boks don’t need more variation on attack”. Meyer reckons “Fourie was brilliant”. As a fan of the man, I thought it was one of his poorer games.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 297) : I still hope for the day when every SA scrummie does not either spend wasted time looking around, take three steps before passing, have to waste time complaining to the ref about some imagined infraction, or decide not to show up at the base of a ruck or series of rucks. I just wish there was a SA scrummie that would pick up the ball the second he got the ruck and make an immediate pass, one who would survey the situation as he approached the breakdown rather than once he is there at the base, why are all these scrummies in NZ????

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 300) : I reckon you’re overly critical on Paige. It’s clearly part of Meyer’s approach for his scrummies to slow down the game at times. Fourie is even praised for that. Paige got 15 minutes in the final pool game. He did well for the third ranked scrummie in the side. One criticism I have is he sometimes has a tell when planning to pass to the blindside.

  • Can you imagine the front foot ball our backs would have if we had a scrummie that actually got the ball out immediately upon arriving at the breakdown. Our 10s could play much flatter. People wonder why Lambie plays deep…it is because he is waiting for his scrumhalf to decide what to do.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 290) : @byron (Comment 292) : @vanmartin (Comment 294) : I also thought that Paige looked quite good…nice crisp service…better than Reinach was in his last few Bok appearances, better than Pienaar at the world cup so far. Still FdP has to stay fit for the whole rwc…

  • @vanmartin (Comment 302) : As long as our scrum halfs slow down the game as you say, we will always look static and slow, and will have difficulty creating space. Why should the scrum half slow down the game, why not get the ball out before the defence has a chance to set up? It seems like a no-brainer to me. All SA scrum halfs suck as far as I am concerned.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 305) : So I am not picking on Paige, I am picking on this strange notion that the scrum half has to slow things down, and let the defence get all set up so our players can run straight into the defence every single time, unless they are exhausted like the USA.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 305) : SA sides play off nine more often than not. Sharks stopped doing it for a few years and were praised as the only side able to play NZ style rugby. The fact that Plum was coach back then probably also contributed but it boils down to the ‘SA way’ I guess. That’s why the whole fight about flyhalves selected is so pointless in my opinion. They hardly ever get to be decision-makers in the current Bok side. We can’t make judgement calls when Schalk sees more ball at first receiver than our 10 does.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 312) : Right!!!! Which is exactly why it upsets me so much that FdP, Pienaar, and Paige all have to wait around at the base of the breakdown surveying the field, deciding what to do, complain to the ref about an imagined infraction, pretend the ball can not come out, and after all that…… and then pass to Schalk!!!!!!!!!

Same here, that’s why that is all I have to say on the issue.

I was glad to see Flouw making a couple of steals towards the end of the game. We really need him to fire if were going to have a chance in the play offs.

I was also glad to see Daune waking up nearing the end of the game. Thought Willem made a massive impact. Burger take the ball very deep and gets in the way of his backs. Willem is more traditional, plays close to his breakdown. And made meters, putting us on the frontfoot. I would start him against Wales/Aus …drop Schalk to bench.

Malherbe… Hard to judge against the US, but he’s made an impact each time he replaced Jannie and isn’t a penalty risk. i feel he should start. Everyone is going on about Jannie not being an impact, the play Malherbe most of the 80 min.

Beast and Bissie is solid. Glad about that. It’s almost refreshing to say Bissie is simply solid and almost quiet… He really seems relaxed. I feel that could be ominous for teams going forward… Quiet before the strom.

  • I thought Paige was excellent. He has an accurate pass and my view of it was that he was very quick and managed to find his backs, even when the forwards sometimes tried to get in the way. Fourie wasn’t good. He must start though, his our … “Brain”. I’d prefer Paige on the bench.

I almost felt nostalgic seeing Morne tiptoe around the tackles. The good old days. He had a decent outing. Did what he does best and simply sent the ball to his left/right. The backs enjoyed the quick ball and could score some nice tries because he did.

Damian is massive for us. I dont care that he doesnt pass that often. Hell get there, Id rather he just make all those meters and burst through tackles every time he gets decent ball.

  • Jesse still sometimes looks like he dont know where he should be, he gets in the way and Is still a worry for me on defense. He is quick though, he needs to smallest bit of space to take a gap. I feel like he could be used better, or should get the ball more. He seems desperate to get involved, possibly why he seems to get in the way.

Mvovo never disappoints. He is so dangerous with ball in hand. Even though JP in top form would be a huge loss, Mvovo, can be just as devastating, though JP seems able to put himself in good positions to have an impact more than Mvovs does.

Its nice to see Habana back to scoring tries. He is gaining momentum. I see him scoring more in this tournament, at the risk at getting to excited and to positive about our chances.

Im almost glad if I see less of Willie. Not because I dont think he is an important creator in the Bok side, but he tends to try to do much and still makes to much errors.

Why not have a “Tri Nations” with Namibia, Zimbabwe and SA a side?
Will help them to get more international experience and will give SA fringe players international experience!!!

Difficult game to judge anyone one, and probably best to concentrate only on the first half when the US still had some legs. That was a worrying performance – way too many errors. Boks will need to improve a lot to have any chance in the quarters.

  • Pollard nothing special an Steyn is still what he has always been an anonymous technician good for conversions only. The forwards constant interference in the backline still hampers the play and at times even breaks it down. I am eager to see if these guys will be able to stand up to teams in the next round such a looking wait. Fdp has proven me wrong he is still very very good. • Just my take on the game. U can only play the opposition put in front of you so to that extent it was a good win. Im happy with our front 5 and the reserves that came on for them. (I do think Brits offers something different to Bissie/Strauss who are good but are same type of players). Our loosies do concern me- their main jobs on attack are securing our ball or linking with the backs and they arent doing either too well at present. Just crashing into players and creating messy rucks. I thought DuPreez looked very jittery tonight and Paige was actually pretty good-he kept it simple and a good accurate pass. Not much to comment on the 10s, they were both ok with not much happening in front of or outside of them. Our midfield is often very flat leading to those horrid long passes over the top- they showed how dangerous they both can be though when they run from depth and at angles-hope they learn from that. Mvovo and Habana did well, im still not convinced that LeRoux is making good decisions out wide and lets a few tries go begging but coming out from the back he was good. Was surprised Serfontein didnt get more time. And then lastly- eish these French refs are so off the pace compared to rest of the world-how are they still on the Elite pannel i dont know.

And if it fumbles it can be just as dangerous as it is effective.

  • A couple of gripes this morning.
I felt Pollard’s passing game was attrocious. Compared to the way Steyn unlocked some decent backline play – no unnecessary long passes and even made some pop passes, I would consider starting Lambie with Steyn on the bench. Pollard did attack the gainline, though.
Kriel showed why he is preferred at fullback for the Bulls. Great attacking player but not the right aptitude for centre.
I won’t go into the (predictable) kicking issue. Enough has been said about that already.

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 468) : Carefull criticizing Pollard. I got rapped for saying his game was unimpressive. But since he is the chosen one I guess we have a right to rate his game every week don’t we? Steyn is a technician in my opinion and sometimes a technician does look good since he is just keeping the assembly line going. I wouldn’t be able to even guess at what Pat would have done since I don’t see enough of him to make a good asessment. I can however say in Pollard or any flyhalfs defense that the meddling forwards are depriving them from making decisions so atoning for some previous poor play is difficult.

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 468) : Look i dont think Pollard was amazing but his linebreaks showed the value of taking the ball flat. Pollard was also done no favours by a very jittery Dupreez. Steyn looked very calm and composed altho i think its the worse ive seen him strike the ball off the tee. But his handling and timing is good…i kno he is the wrong side of youth but i just wonder if that youthful Morne Steyn that first arrived at the Bulls would not thrive under the new Bulls style of play.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 469) : Id expand on your last point in saying the loose forwards wanting to carry the ball and the midfield being so flat arent aiding the flyhalves. Get the loosies in the ruck protecting the ball or on the flyhalf inside. Get the midfield deeper so we dont need to throw those long skip passes. Do those 2 things and we will slowly be onto soemthing

  • @SheldonK (Comment 473) :

Please go back and check when Pollards breaks came. Your assessment of “the value of taking the ball flat” in conjunction with those two breaks holds no water. I’m not trying to be contentious. It’s just that both breaks came from broken play, not from a breakdown and Pollard taking the ball at first receiver.

There is however many advantages of taking the ball flat, when used correctly.

I still would not prefer Morne over Pollard, even though Morne looked miles ahead of him. Pollard needs to learn that sometimes doing the simple thing and just passing the ball is better than “taking the ball to the line” or trying to make the miracle pass.

I’m very nervous with him starting every time. I don’t want him to do badly. I really don’t think the World Cup is the place to teach a young player the ins and outs of flyhalf play.

But I have a feeling it will be Pollard and Morne going forward. HM prefers Pollard and must have been really pleased that Morne looked good.

  • @Letgo (Comment 475) : Yes the breaks were from broken play but he is still very willing to take the ball to the line and not just shovel it- something Lambie used to do till he started playing deeper (We have said reasons why he has started doing that).
I dont think Morne should start and I really dont think he has jumped ahead of Lambie- Steyn was always going to play this game to keep him semi fresh should there be an injury. Same applies to Paige. Pollard is the bigger more aggressive player and thats why i think Meyer likes him over Lambie. But both need to be in the team as they offer different skill sets. Im also not sure Pollard and DeAllende are the best combo next to each other- rather if Pollard plays put serfontein next to him and shift DeAllende out 1.

Clearly he’s the best fh for HM’s Boks

  • @SheldonK (Comment 477) : I got a very similar feeling about the Pollard & de Allende combo but I’d be loathe (terrified) to shift de Allende into the 13 channel at the moment. I’d still like to see Serfontein playing there (13) as I rate him as our best defensive centre currently in the squad.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 480) : Yeh its a bit of a mixed bag really. DeAllende does beat the first defender but more often than not recently he comes on a short line and tucks the ball under his arm and tries to fend off guys and doesnt look like he will pass at all. As a result Kriel has to also run the short line in case DeAllende is somehow able to give a short offload. So now Pollard is getting the ball on the advantage line and both his centres are running right ontop of him- hence we see those long skip passes. Serfontein keeps his depth so id like him there at 12 and he is a good passer so then DeAllende can get the ball wider and bet the usually smaller 13 and then we really are looking on good money for a try. But as you say Serfontein is good at defending in the 13 channel…so would you then rather play him there always, or just shift him to 13 on defense and DeAllednde can defend the inside? As i said bit of a mixed bag

  • @vanmartin (Comment 480) :

Agree about Jan as a defensive centre. Especially since Jesse has looked lost on attack in his last couple of games. We can’t have him on the field, just in case he receives the ball in good position.

Jan, I can almost describe him as boring, especially lately, but he is strong on defense and won’t be caught out of position.

    We’ll see what HM does.

I’m predicting he takes the same 23, while Mvovo should be replaced by a fit again JPP and PSDT could also be replaced by Matfield. Oh and Jannie and Strauss (bench) will also come back into the side.

    Oh and Ruan.

I’m basically predicting that Lambie will be dropped completely, but without saying it ;-) .

Pienaar back in for Paige and Lambie will come in for Steyn. Think Serfontein may replace Kriel in starting side. And if JPP fit he will replace Mvovo.

  • Personally I would have liked to see Pollard have some time at inside center with lambie and fdp. I can just imagine the option two or 3 clever boots can give us. Especially on a nice cross kick where he is much closer to the outside wing. Those kicks could be really accurate and devastating. Now add Jesse Kriel on the full back Willie on wing and Mvovo on other wing.

  • So basically I reckon HM will go:
    15. Willie
    14. Habana (or JP if he is fit)
    13. Kriel
    12. De Allende
    11. Mvovo (or Habana if JP plays 14)
    10. Pollard
    9. FdP
    8. Vermeulen
    7. Schalk/Alberts
    6. Louw
    5. Lood/Victor
    4. Eben
    3. Jannie
    2. Bismarck
    1. Beast
And then the bench pretty much as we’ve seen it:
    16. Strauss
    17. Nyakane
    18. Malherbe
    19. Lood/Victor
    20. Alberts/PSdT/Kolisi
    21. Ruan
    22. Lambie
    23. Serfontein

  • @SheldonK (Comment 488) : Yup, difference though is that the conversion from fullback to centre never occurred at National level. I may be coming off as a Kriel hater but it’s honestly not the case. I hoped he’d make into the Bok squad based on his displays at fullback. Perhaps he can become an international quality centre but I would have preferred that he learnt the ropes at provincial level instead. I think you also know that I feel a lot of players can play different positions successfully but I do feel 13 is a specialist position.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 679) : Wales’ attack is as 1D as ours….I’m glad we’re facing them instead of Oz.

Oz basically assured of semi-final spot….Scotland will give zero resistance to Oz.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 680) : Sure…still, the Aussies 13 man defence was really impressive!
And I also reckon the Aussies semi is sewn up…of course I will be wearing a kilt and singing about flowers in support of the Scots!!

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 680) : @pastorshark (Comment 681) : ja Wales really did not play well against 13, really should have scored but did not move the ball wide enough!!! Bokke can and should beat Wales and ja Oz should win easily!!!!

  • @pastorshark (Comment 681) : @JD (Comment 682) : It was ultimately poor captaincy from Wales….they should have taken the 3 points on offer.

Guaranteed they would have had many more chances in the Oz 22 to get more penalties….but they decided to scrum against a trick-filled oz scrum, and oz successfully ran down the clock.

  • Well done Ireland. Lost three (two really key players) due to injury, and still managed to dominate France in that game. You must love the support from the Irish crowd.
